A significant fraction of gas stations/convenience stores in the US are
run by people from the Indian sub-continent. An example of this is the
owner who graduated first in a class of 100,000 from C.I.T.* on the
Simpsons.

Its a bit of a stereotype, but not really a bad one. Its more of a
generalization. Almost everyone has had personal dealings with someone
from India/Pakistan/Bangladesh in a convenience store; and for many that's
their only/main way of encountering folks from that area.

Indians run a lot of gas stations in the US. Also
hotels and software companies. At a rough guess,
almost no one in the US not of Indian descent will
have the faintest idea what a Guju is. I would be
surprised if anyone else on the list knows, for example.

I tend to think that only a professional
grievance-seeker would be offended by this. I'm proud
that Indians are working in gas stations and
convenience stores - that's the first step on the
ladder of the American Dream, and good for them for
getting out there and working hard instead of sitting
on their ass complaining about racism and the
oppression of American society. I don't think there's
anything demeaning about it at all, and I don't think
any less of Hillary for making the joke. She has been
a surprisingly good Senator and is, with Joe

Tying in several parts of this thread, I saw this study while referencing
Gunjaratis

www.isnie.org/ISNIE02/Papers02/kalnins.pdf -

Our empirical setting is the lodging industry in Texas. Within this
industry, we study one
specific ethnically based group: hotel owners who are immigrants from the
Indian state of
Gujarat. Gujaratis currently play an important role in this industry - as a
group they own a
significant percent of non-luxury hotels in the United States. In Texas in
1999, Gujaratis owned
35% of independent hotels and over 50% of motels unaffiliated with national
chains. Further,
they owned over 50% of properties affiliated with Days Inn, Econolodge,
Comfort Inn, and
Super Eight.

He doesn't discuss gas stations, but the same sorta thing does apply there.
Indeed, when I saw run a gas station in the joke, I was not thinking of a
$6.00/hour worker, but either the manager or the manager/owner...because
clerks don't run the business.

This makes the email rounds every once in a while. Check the last bullet:

You Live in New York City If...
* You say the city and expect everyone to know that this means Manhattan.
* You have never been to the Statue of Liberty or the Empire State Building.
* The subway makes sense to you, and the subway should never be called
anything like the Metro.
* You believe that being able to swear at people in their own language makes
you multilingual.
* Your door has more than three locks and is made of steel.
* You think Central Park is nature.
* You pay more each month to park your car than most people in the US pay on
their mortgage.
* You haven't seen more than 12 stars in the night sky since you went away
to camp as a kid.
* You pay $5 without blinking for a beer that cost the bar 28 cents.
* You have 27 different take-out menus next to your telephone.
* Going to Brooklyn is considered a road trip. Of course, you only go
there to attend weddings or funerals.

* You take a taxi to get to your health club to exercise.
* You don't hear sirens anymore.
* You live in a building with a larger population than most American towns.
* Your doorman is Russian, your grocer is Korean, your deli man is Israeli,
your building super is Italian, your laundry guy is Chinese, your favorite
bartender is Irish, your favorite diner owner is Greek, the watch-seller on
your corner is Senegalese, your last cabbie was Pakistani, your newsstand
guy is Indian, your favorite falafel guy is Egyptian, and your neighbor is
Swedish...

Lieberman, one of the handful of really effective and

I've been happier than I expected. My vote for her a few years ago was more
of a strike against Rick Lazio than a Hillary endorsement. Lazio ran a
nasty, vile campaign and his most vocal advocate, Al D'Amato had lost an
election in '98 to Schumer for similar tactics.

I'm also impressed that she's kept one very important campaign promise to
New Yorkers: she's not running for President. She repeatedly stated in 2000
that she would serve a full term and not abandon the state for a
presidential run if elected.

Hillary Clinton Regrets Gandhi Joke
Hillary Clinton Says She Regrets Joking That Gandhi Used to Run a Gas
Station in St. Louis

The Associated Press

ST. LOUIS Jan. 6 Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton apologized for joking that
Mahatma Gandhi used to run a gas station in St. Louis, saying it was a
lame attempt at humor.

The New York Democrat made the remark at a fund-raiser Saturday. During an
event here for Senate candidate Nancy Farmer, Clinton introduced a quote
from Gandhi by saying, He ran a gas station down in St. Louis.

After laughter from many in the crowd of at least 200 subsided, the former
first lady continued, No, Mahatma Gandhi was a great leader of the 20th
century. In a nod to Farmer's underdog status against Republican Sen. Kit
Bond, Clinton quoted the Indian independence leader as saying: First they
ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.

The director of a U.S. center devoted to Gandhi's teachings said the
remarks amounted to stereotyping and were insensitive.

After being approached by The Associated Press to clarify the remarks,
Clinton suggested in a statement late Monday that she never meant to fuel
the stereotype often used as a comedic punch line that certain ethnic
groups run America's gas stations.

I have admired the work and life of Mahatma Gandhi and have spoken
publicly about that many times, Clinton said. I truly regret if a lame
attempt at humor suggested otherwise.

Michelle Naef, administrator of the M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence,
a Memphis, Tenn.-based organization founded in 1991 by a Gandhi grandson,
credited Clinton and her husband, former President Clinton, with long
having supported the Gandhi message. But she said Saturday's remarks
could be incredibly harmful.

I don't think she was, in any way, trying to demean Mahatma Gandhi, Naef
said. To be generous to her, I would say it was a poor attempt at humor.
Perhaps I'm overly sensitive, but I find it offensive when people use
stereotypes in that way.
