A significant fraction of gas stations/convenience stores in the US are run by people from the Indian sub-continent. An example of this is the owner who graduated first in a class of 100,000 from C.I.T.* on the Simpsons. Its a bit of a stereotype, but not really a bad one. Its more of a generalization. Almost everyone has had personal dealings with someone from India/Pakistan/Bangladesh in a convenience store; and for many that's their only/main way of encountering folks from that area. I will claim partial credit in that you didn't _know_, you had to figure it out :-) Tying in several parts of this thread, I saw this study while referencing Gunjaratis www.isnie.org/ISNIE02/Papers02/kalnins.pdf - Our empirical setting is the lodging industry in Texas. Within this industry, we study one specific ethnically based group: hotel owners who are immigrants from the Indian state of Gujarat. Gujaratis currently play an important role in this industry - as a group they own a significant percent of non-luxury hotels in the United States. In Texas in 1999, Gujaratis owned 35% of independent hotels and over 50% of motels unaffiliated with national chains. Further, they owned over 50% of properties affiliated with Days Inn, Econolodge, Comfort Inn, and Super Eight. He doesn't discuss gas stations, but the same sorta thing does apply there. Indeed, when I saw run a gas station in the joke, I was not thinking of a $6.00/hour worker, but either the manager or the manager/owner...because clerks don't run the business. Dan M. Of course, you only go there to attend weddings or funerals. * America west of the Hudson is still theoretical to you. * You have jaywalking down to an art form. She has been a surprisingly good Senator and is, with Joe Lieberman, one of the handful of really effective and reasonable voices on foreign policy in the Democratic Party. I've been happier than I expected. My vote for her a few years ago was more of a strike against Rick Lazio than a Hillary endorsement. Lazio ran a nasty, vile campaign and his most vocal advocate, Al D'Amato had lost an election in '98 to Schumer for similar tactics. I'm also impressed that she's kept one very important campaign promise to New Yorkers: she's not running for President. She repeatedly stated in 2000 that she would serve a full term and not abandon the state for a presidential run if elected. http://abcnews.go.com/wire/Politics/ap20040106_1188.html Hillary Clinton Regrets Gandhi Joke Hillary Clinton Says She Regrets Joking That Gandhi Used to Run a Gas Station in St. Louis The Associated Press ST. LOUIS Jan. 6 Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton apologized for joking that Mahatma Gandhi used to run a gas station in St. Louis, saying it was a lame attempt at humor. The New York Democrat made the remark at a fund-raiser Saturday. During an event here for Senate candidate Nancy Farmer, Clinton introduced a quote from Gandhi by saying, He ran a gas station down in St. Louis. After laughter from many in the crowd of at least 200 subsided, the former first lady continued, No, Mahatma Gandhi was a great leader of the 20th century. In a nod to Farmer's underdog status against Republican Sen. Kit Bond, Clinton quoted the Indian independence leader as saying: First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win. The director of a U.S. center devoted to Gandhi's teachings said the remarks amounted to stereotyping and were insensitive. After being approached by The Associated Press to clarify the remarks, Clinton suggested in a statement late Monday that she never meant to fuel the stereotype often used as a comedic punch line that certain ethnic groups run America's gas stations. I have admired the work and life of Mahatma Gandhi and have spoken publicly about that many times, Clinton said. I truly regret if a lame attempt at humor suggested otherwise. Michelle Naef, administrator of the M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence, a Memphis, Tenn.-based organization founded in 1991 by a Gandhi grandson, credited Clinton and her husband, former President Clinton, with long having supported the Gandhi message. But she said Saturday's remarks could be incredibly harmful. I don't think she was, in any way, trying to demean Mahatma Gandhi, Naef said. To be generous to her, I would say it was a poor attempt at humor. Perhaps I'm overly sensitive, but I find it offensive when people use stereotypes in that way. On the Net: M.K.
