Re: [BVARC] Charging for QSL?

2023-05-18 Thread Scott Medbury via BVARC
Often because of the cost of postage a DX station will request "green
stamps". International postage from the US is about $1.40 to send them a
card. If you use clublog, you can send a request and use PayPal. All of
this is part of the reason why so many including myself use LOTW to get
confirmation.

You can also use the outgoing ARRL qsl bureau.

Re: [BVARC] Charging for QSL?

2023-05-18 Thread M Reiter via BVARC
I am a very new ham, I have been reading and listening to this upset for
awhile, which is remarkable given my newness, so I assume it is very
upsetting for many people. I believe that the contests and award agencies
should not require the qrz log confirmation. not everyone has an account
with them if a ham loggs a contact that should be enough and it should be
assumed that there was a QSO. if a ham chooses to falsify a QSO well then
they live with that deceit. maybe if you set up a contest among QRZ or ARRL
members and you want to force them to only talk to each other and require
their log confirmation that would just be a particular contest rule. in
general for things like DXCC or other awards that include the public then
requiring confirmation just causes upset when you have to get more contacts
that the award specifies to account for people that have not logged to a
specific log service.

Then I would consider that borderline “pecuniary” and a tilt of the genteel

Shannon,

Common practice following rising postal rates.

Cards started out as real post cards, then got fancy with color photography+.
In order to keep them pristine, mailing in an envelope became customary,
drawing even more postage.

When in Indonesia, it was common for me to receive their QSL card with a self
addressed envelope enclosed with a dollar, real stamps or a “green stamp” (that
was killed years ago) – an international postal unit of value about two thirds
of the time. Motivated me to respond in stellar fashion. Started a significant
stamp collection.

With large numbers, gets to be a real job, often farmed out to QSL Managers,
hence the drive toward different e-QSL verifications of contacts “chasing
paper”.

If I want even a domestic QSL card from someone, I send them a SASE.
Especially if its from a place I need, I want to knock down any barriers that
keep that from happening.

From time to time when I lived In Tennessee, I received a SASE and $1USD from
foreign county hunters who desperately needed my county. There werent many hams
in that one.

Your email has also reminded me that my QSL Bureau has run out of my envelopes.
I need to get that back on my to do list.
