Re: [BVARC] RFI

2021-12-19 Thread Chris Luppens KG5BBF via BVARC
I am in similar situation with my Ciro Marconi STEALTH magnetic loop on my
small balcony 18 stories up. I have ended up buying frequency specific ferrite
devices from Palomar Engineering that allow for at least three loops of the USB
cable to be used. Both what I have read and my experience indicates this is
most effective. Once in a while I still have a problem with noise but I no
longer get disconnected. I rarely loose the connection to HRD when using it,
but only after have been on for some time. Not sure of cause of that. I am
fairly close to the antenna itself and only have 45-ft of cable to get to it.
Being in high rise I have no possibility of using a linear and live with a 100
watts max power.

Due to some HOA C, I am confined to attic and gutter antennas for the time
being.

I am getting a bit of RFI on occasion into my PC; it manifests itself mainly by
apparently disconnecting the com port from Commander. When this happens, I can
restore functionality by selecting a different com port, and then re-selecting
the original correct com port.

I am grounded to a 10' ground rod about 8 ft. from the station via 2" copper
strap. I did install ferrite beads on the USB cables at the back of the PC as
well as on the power cord, and this has reduced the frequency of occurrence,
but I would like to eliminate it altogether.

Any other ideas and suggestions would be most appreciated!

Re: [BVARC] Building an FSD

2021-03-10 Thread Chris Luppens KG5BBF via BVARC
A few weeks ago I started using FT8 with my IC-7300 and had no idea if my
rooftop diamond shaped off-center dipole was even working. Well I was
introduced quickly to https://pskreporter.info/pskmap.html and that webpage
lets you look at all bands and many different modes including WSPR. I saw my
signal being seen in Japan to Chile to northern Canada and over to Spain that
first time, so figured I was doing OK! I think it was 20m as it was daytime,
later in afternoon. If you have a radio that you can connect to like an
IC-7300 you can use program like WSJTX and use if for several different modes
including FT8 and WSPR. This is very popular program as I have come to learn.
Then go look at where is signal is using something like psk reporter. It is
very revealing and fun.

I did get some help and my antenna was modeled on EZNEC and it a bit of a cloud
warmer at 80m but is not horrible overall. Considering the situation I am
limited to, things could be a lot worse.

I don’t know anything about WSPR. I need to study about it.

I am a little bit inspired by discussions on this forum a few weeks ago. There
seem to be a lot of unknowns making it harder for hams to get an accurate
pattern. We are seldom able to get the antenna as high as we should, or where.
Plus, we bend them in knarly ways. How good are these simulations given these
challenges?

We already have antenna modeling software based on the NEC which is quite
accurate, depending on the set up parameters provided, of course. That model

But what do we (I) really want? I want to know what and how my antenna is
performing in the real world outside of my QTH. Is it getting to Europe or
VK? When is the best time and frequency to get to Japan or South Africa?
Questions like this are not to be answered by a FSD.

What we really need is a world wide system to detect our signals wherever they
may occur. So let's start thinking of that. We just need a few hams on every
continent to participateWait! Not so fast...there is already a
system that does this. WSPR and it is available from a local amateur radio

2018 even has a review of this system.

https://www.sotabeams.co.uk/content/QSTREVIEW.pdf

Now look, I am not poo pooing the FSD concept , ideas, discussion, etc. Very
cool indeed to get a group of folks excited and discussing antenna stuff. Woo
Hoo! I'm all for it, being the antenna phreak that I am. I'm just taking a
step back and seeing if it is necessary, practical or even applicable for Hams.
Plus, maybe some don't know about WSPR.

is under some high power-lines with the long leg 90 degrees to the power-lines.
I used my nanoVNA to study the band SWR response, and everything looks
reasonable, though some small adjustments may need to be made. Nothing is
grounded as yet.

Here’s my problem. I am only attempting to receive at this time and I get
consistent QRM white noise across all bands to the point where I can barely
pick out some voices, etc.

* I am confident that the antenna is properly connected due to my antenna
study.
* I don’t believe the power lines are an issue, since the problem would
likely be more isolated show up as birdies at certain frequencies.
* The radio settings seem to all be correct according to the manual.

* Lack of grounding, but again the white noise is generally consistant
across the spectrum. Still, this could be the problem.
* I have turned off my computer, so there no QRM from its power supply.
* It does not help to have the switching power supply right next to the
radio, but other users give good reports on this model and no QRM issues are
mentioned.
* I tried the radio at different times of the day on 20-m voice band,
with the same noisy result.
* It could be the net result of a large number of small device
transformers, but I doubt it.
* I turned off the wifi, and still no change.

Hmm… I am a little stumped. Any thoughts or ideas? Personal experiences?

Antennas -- Some Guidance for the Neophyte

I was listening to the Stir Crazy Net today and the subject of antennas was
broached. Some claimed they knew nothing about skyhooks (but wanted to learn)
and this note is targeted to y'all.

Antennas Basics -- have a look at the 9 article series I wrote for the BVARC
Newsletter -- February to November 2015 (no April)
http://www.bvarc.org/newsletter/201502.pdf this url will get you started. I
approach things from a layman's point giving you a start to understanding.

Antenna Modeling -- Most of the modeling apps are based on the NEC Engine.
L.B. Cebik, W4RNL(sk) wrote a 4 part series in QST Nov 2000 to Feb 2001.
"Beginners Guide to Modeling with NEC". Cebik was the the most prolific writer
in Ham Radio (Silver is 2nd HI)

There are many other sources of basic antenna and modeling information, but
you must, and I accentuate MUST, get a firm grip on the basics of antennas in
order to "get it". Look, if what I write doesn't resonate with you, then,
please, find another author that does. There are many out there (see the list
of references in article 9 in my BVARC newsletter series mentioned above)

In summary: I promote 2 general guidelines:

1-- Antennas should always be looked at as a “system” consisting of the RF
source (your transmitter), transmission line, matching networks (if any) and
the load – the antenna itself.

2--A firm grasp of the fundamental principles and characteristics of
antennas and transmission lines is absolutely essential for any of it to make
sense.

Believe me, I was once where y'all are. I am not a degreed antenna engineer,
I am simply an antenna aficionado. Before long you will be too.

GL ES 73...Rick W5RH rickhille...@gmail.com

psI'd be pleased to answer any questions or requests for further guidance,

14 awg stranded at min. Alpha Delta uses 14 solid for their fan dipoles. So
either way works, depending on how it is deployed.

I need input. I want to build an additional 40M EFHW, I'm wondering if the
group has input or guidance on the best kind of wire to use for the long
wire? It appears that the antenna manufacturers are happy to sell me
"high-grade antenna wire" that is nothing more than regular 14AWG wire I
could get literally anywhere for much less; my question is- has anyone tried
anything more exotic? Is there a flavor of wire that works better/worse for
antennas?

I appreciate you all.

1. Buy a hand gun.
2. Learn how to use it.
3. Get a handgun carry license
4. Install security devices to let you know when someone is on your
property.
5. Feel secure.

Rick hit the nail on the head; since your home address was already listed with
the FCC, the genie is already out of the bottle - for now, anyway. It may be
possible to scrub all those crawlers, databases, etc. eventually, by
obfuscating now; can't hurt to try if it's important to you.

The way I avoided (most of) this myself was to list one of my business
addresses with the FCC ULS before I ever took my Element 2 exam; my home
address was never listed to begin with. Maybe too late to prevent frustration
for you, KJ, but maybe of some help to others who prefer to fly somewhat under
the radar in the future.

Just Google your call and see how many hits you get with and without your real

hiding, for sure.

Good luck.

So here’s what I did, after consulting a few non-ham expat friends who’ve had
to solve this same problem for other reasons. I made an account with
https://anytimemailbox.com and got a normal address here in Cypress, where they
will either allow me to pick mail up, or they’ll scan it and send me an email,
or access it via a snazzy website. I’m still waiting for my information to
clear, but for $10/month, I feel like this is a good way to go.

I’ll update the group if I have a bad experience.

Traditionally (forever!!) hams have hade the address or contact information
listed

Because we traded QSL CARDS which came in the mail… It was a real thrill to
get a mailbox full of cards

from other hams in strange far away places… We got yearly CALLBOOKS the size
of giant phone books

every year so we had everyone’s current information.. I remember when I first
got licensed I rushed out

and bought the next callbook so I could see my info in print (before the
internet)

In the past 10 years or so, we have had increasing more and more hams that are
AFRAID to publish

The address or phone numbers… We have built into our BVARC member database
provisions of

Those that want to chicken out on phone number and / or address..I really
think this is a shame though.

With a ham license, there really isn’t a way to hide your info anyway.. you can
be looked up on the fcc

Webpages, or qrz, or any number of other sources… SO WHY HIDE?? For the
most part only other hams

Know about this stuff.. your average crook has no clue.

Just my 2cents

I really want to be able to use my callsign in public forums, etc., but I’m not
keen on anyone being able to therefore look up my home address. I know it’s
available fairly easily through fairly conventional methods, but I just don’t
want to add another route. I want to be able to have something like a Po Box
registered with the FCC on my license, that forwards all mail sent to the PO
Box to my actual mailing (physical) address.

Has anyone else solved this problem? A cursory search of the internet shows RV
forwarding services and stuff, but wouldn’t this
