Re: [BVARC] Elecraft P3 BLACK SCREEN but not DEAD

2022-08-21 Thread Glenn Anderson via BVARC
I had the same problem with mine a while ago. The problem was with the 3.3-volr
regulator module. It would get very hot and stop working after a few minutes.
There are two regulator modules on the input board. A 5-volt and a 3.3-volt.
They are the thick, black, edge-mounted things on the board. If you have the
same problem,  one if them will be very hot after a few minutes. I replaced
mine with a different type and it solved the issue. Calls to the factory were
of little help. Let me know if this is helpful.Glenn

operated but the POWER switch no longer worked, i.e. it was on all the time

Re: [BVARC] Fwd: [tdxs-list] FD Issues to be finalized

2019-05-20 Thread Glenn Anderson via BVARC
Nizar,I am starting the checkout and updating of the PC's this weekend. As far
as the powerline noise, I reached out to Jeff at centerpoint two weeks ago.  He
came out and found a bad arrestor near the site. He has opened a repair order
to have it replaced. The arrestor is near the 7-11 on old Richmond road. Glenn

Issues to be finalized Allen, I agree. I am starting to ‘freak out’ about not
getting things done in time. Dave sent me a nice Long e-mail regarding
receiving antenna for 40 meters. I sure would like to have that antenna. He has
everything to set this up. But, we cannot have the phased beverage pointed at
the GOTA station in the emergency truck. Dave also stated that we cannot have
it near the main antennas or it will be overpowered by the transmitted signals.
Here is the situation with the FD. 1.   Bill has the antennas under
control. He is going ahead on planning to put the CW tower close to the house
and the other two parallel to it so they all point NW to NE rotatable
manually.2.   I am assuming that Glenn has everything taken care of for the
computers. Please send him an e-mail to check. 3.   We have additional A/C
units4.   Your list is working fine. We can add more people later.5.
The GOTA station needs a leader or two. I don’t mind helping to promote it but
someone needs to be there. Any suggestions?6.   Mike says the food is taken
care of. He has appointed Kelli and Daphne to take care of this. We probably
need to supplement the food with high energy protein snacks for late night
operators. 7.   No one has reported on the progress of the Reliant people
for the reduction of noise.  I will try and get a meeting together before the
BVARC meeting since I will be out of the country for several days in June.

Issues to be finalized  We are about one month away from our Mega FD event. We
have a couple of issues that need to be decided as we move forward with the
planning. GOTA station operation, management and promotion. Finalization of
Antenna placement that includes location of GOTA station6 meter antenna,
location and operation. GOTA station is very important during FD because it can
account for many points besides the QSO scores. We need someone to take on the
task of organizing the setup, operation and marketing of the station to the
local schools, Boy Scouts, ARRL officials, and other organizations. All of
these activities can add a lot of points to the total score. DO WE HAVE ANY
VOLUNTEERS?? We also need to finalize the exact location of the GOTA station at
the FD site, including filters and antennas, so we can finalize the layout of
the antennas for minimum interference between different stations.  Finally, due
to the low number of sunspots, a lot of our QSOs are going to come from
operating 40 and 80 meters. As you all know, the noise level on these two bands
will make it very difficult to hear stations calling us without special
listening antennas. Dave, K5GN, has a beverage antenna for 40 meters that he is
willing to bring and install. However, it needs to be installed away from the
other antennas, including the GOTA station.  The 6 meter antenna location needs
to be decided and the rig needs to be manned. Do we have a person responsible
for the antenna erection and operation of the station? Will this rig be
operated on FT8  or just SSB?  If you are involved with any of these three
issues, please let everyone know the plan.  Nizar ___

The unit was not a factory build.  I was in Computer engineering for 40
years and retired as the Quality Assurance Director for a company that was
building and supplying flight worthy equipment to the Air Craft industry.
That equipment is currently in use on Aircraft to give flyers internet
access.  The only thing that I did not know when I purchased the K3,  is
that Elecraft preforms  Burn In on the Factory Builds.  At Honeywell we also
performed Burn In to weed out weak components that could fail in early life.
Using the K3s for over two  years without any component failures is a good
substitute for what the Factory Burn In accomplishes. You can confirm that
with a  call to Elecraft.   I have built many rigs over the years and found
that the K3s was not complicated to assemble.

[BVARC] Fwd: [VHFcontesting] WSJT-X 2.0

2018-07-25 Thread Glenn Anderson via BVARC

Original message From: Steve Kavanagh via VHFcontesting
 Date: 7/25/18 05:39 (GMT-06:00) To:
vhfcontest...@contesting.com Subject: [VHFcontesting] WSJT-X 2.0
It looks we will only have one more major VHF contest with all the confusion on
FT8 with regard to contest mode and rover procedures.  Here is what K1JT posted
to the WSJT Yahoo group yesterday.  I suppose there will be some issues with
people with out-of-date software, but the backward-incompatibility will soon
get them to download the new version.

73,
Steve VE3SMA

Hi to all,

Of course we are well aware of the issues many have experienced when
using WSJT modes in North American VHF contests. To summarize, there
 are two main problem areas:

 - Decoding of messages with two callsigns followed by "R " and a
4-character grid, and the related auto-sequencing, depend of proper
and coordinated setting of a checkbox at both stations.

 - There is a crying need for transparent support of "/R" (Rover)
callsigns in all standard messages, during contests.

Here's some background information aimed at relative newcomers and
casual users of WSJT, followed by a brief preview of program features we
plan to make available in Version 2.0 of WSJT-X.

 Contest Mode

Standard JT-style messages (those used in all of the structured WSJT
modes) have 71 information bits: two 28-bit callsigns and a 15-bit grid
locator. The 15-bit field can alternatively convey a signal report
(with optional "R"), or "RRR", "RR73", or "73". One additional bit
re-purposes the 71 bits to carry a 13-character free test message. In a
72-bit packet there are NO free bits available to insert "R " before a
grid locator, or "/R" after a callsign.

The "NA VHF Contest" checkbox presently in WSJT-X is a stop-gap feature
added in 2016 to the MSK144 mode, and later to FT8. These modes
conventionally use 15-second T/R intervals and offer semi-automated
message sequencing. NA VHF contests require the exchange of 4-character
grid locators. Signal reports are OK, but not required. Contesters
 wanted a way to send messages like "K1ABC W9XYZ R EN37", thereby
increasing their QSO rates by eliminating some transmissions from the
 standard minimal-QSO sequence.

 Rovers
 --
Rovers move from grid to grid and must append "/R" to their callsign
during the contest. These hardworking folks definitely need some help
if they are to use WSJT modes effectively.

All structured modes currently supported in WSJT-X permit messages like
 these:

 CQ K1ABC/R FN41
 DE K1ABC/R 73

... but you can't use a second callsign in place of the "CQ" or "DE".
Once again, there is no room for such information in a 72-bit packet.

Some time ago we created workarounds that enable QSOs using a "/R"
callsign or an "R+grid" message fragment. But these capabilities are
limited and necessarily somewhat clumsy. Users must understand what's
possible and what's not, and they must be careful about some necessary
program settings. Decoding "R+grid" messages requires ticking a
checkbox, and if someone else sends you standard signal reports you need
to uncheck the box or manually edit your messages. Also, for reasons
explained in the WSJT-X User Guide, this feature cannot work well when
world-wide propagation is possible -- as it has been recently on 6 meters.

All in all, it's not a happy situation -- especially when considering
the typical presence of many casual operators who happen upon a contest
and just want to make a few QSOs.

Recently K9AN, G4WJS, and I have been developing enhanced versions of
the MSK144 and FT8 protocols that extend the message payload to 77 bits.
For a taste of what's to come, here's a brief list of things made
 possible by the extra bits:

 1. NA VHF Contest operation with full support of grid exchanges and
 "/R" (Rover) callsigns

 2. EU VHF Contest operation with the exchange of 6-digit grids, QSO
serial numbers, and "/P" (portable) callsigns

 3. ARRL Field Day operation with standard Field Day exchanges

 4. ARRL RTTY Roundup operation with standard contest exchanges

 5. Better and more user-friendly support for compound and nonstandard
 callsigns

 6. A special "telemetry" message format for exchange of arbitrary
 information up to 71 bits

 7. The existing FT8 DXpedition mode will be supported, and a more
powerful DXpedition mode may be offered as well.

All of these features work seamlessly and automatically. No "contest
mode" checkboxes are needed. In most situations decoding sensitivity
will be slightly better than at present for FT8; for MSK144 it will
sometimes be about 0.5 dB worse. Occupied bandwidths will be the same
as they are now, and false-decode rates will be significantly lower.

Much of the necessary programming is finished. Many of the new features
have been tested on the air, and we find them to work well.

Don't rush to download something -- these

Houston or Dallas?  Just wondering because my analog rig Alinco DR-735 with a

Attention Canadian and US licensed amateur radio ops, for your consideration
is K3 #75. This unit was updated with the K3SYNA synthesizer board, KXV3B
I/O pre amp board, and NEOGRIP tuning knob ring. The gold plated header pin
replacement was completed by Elecraft in Watsonville in June 2017.

Includes KPA3 100 watt PA, KAT3 ATU, KBPF3 Gen Coverage RX Bandpass module
and five roofing filters. 6.0 hz, 2.7 hz, 1.8 hz, 700 hz (Inrad) and 500 hz.

The DSP board upgrade has also been done.

An Elecraft Heil MD2 microphone and stand, KSUB firmware upgrade cable, all
manuals and update documentation are included.

This is a one owner, non-smoking environment transceiver. The unit will be
shipped in a factory box, the one supplied from the upgrade.

But wait, there's more! Also in the package is a P3 (2014) and SVGA board
with all necessary cables, documentation. This will be double boxed for
shipping.

Price $2400 USD, does not include shipping. Current location is Halifax,
NS.

Please reply off list to burch dot craft at gmail dot com to arrange for
photos and a landline from me to discuss.

PSI have an LP-Pan and Emu 0200 with all cables and documents as well
for $150 USD for the pair.

Reason for sale, cleaning the shack.

There will be several of us from BVARC and TDXS operating this contest. If you
hear us, please give us a call. Some of us will call CQ on 10 and 15 meters to
pick up some local DX.

Send us your call sign. We will slow down - most of us will. If you hear a lot

Good luck. Don’t forget it starts at 1800 UTC tomorrow.

It went as well as expected.  The conditions were poor, the A index was around
50. I only operated for the first 6 hours of the contest. Using chrome remote
desktop, I was able to run my home station from a laptop in Huntsville. I used
N1MM/MMTTY for this contest. It seemed to run as well remotely as in person.

Hi all,

You may have heard that the popular N1MM program now has a “contester’s
spectral display” window. Very soon, we anticipate a new release of N1MM that
provides support for this feature when used with the K3, K3S, and KX3. (The
Win4k3 software package was just modified to provide the spectral data that
N1MM needs. Thanks to Tom, VA2FSQ, for fast-tracking this addition.)

I’ve already seen the demo, which is quite impressive. When the release is
finalized, we’ll do another announcement with full details.

All of those US hams decided on their own to purchase property in the
restricted area (myself included). I knew what it meant and I'm willing to
'man up' and abide by the agreement I signed at purchase to follow the
rules. Running to 'daddy' after the fact and claiming it is VITAL that I be

it is that vital don't purchase in such an area. Sometimes that can be

I see the APRS map shows possible tropo from Texas all the way East to the East
Coast. it has been growing all evening, and night. At this time I'm out og it
in OK, but will be on in AM, early to check it out.

2017-03-20 Thread Glenn Anderson via BVARC

5AM Monday-APRS map is red over OK,TX and LA. No DX on yet as it is too early
and they are still asleep.
The EM10 bcns on-
144.295
222.060

1296.403
are all in with fairly good sigs @ 407 miles

Also the W5HN/b 144.280 in EM13 is above normal

Waiting on Ops to get out of bed and get on!!

Did not hear AA5C/b 222.060 EM13 -maybe off air , usually I can hear it.

Am still looking for a 1296 QSO with LA, hope K5SE or KE5JXC can be on this AM.

[BVARC] Resending K5DX AR Cluster Telnet Port Change

2016-11-24 Thread Glenn Anderson via BVARC
Due to the overwhelming number of DOS attacks on Telnet port 23, I have
changed the Telnet port on the K5DX AR Cluster server to 7373.

If you use the K5DX AR Cluster for DX spots you will have to change the port
from 23 to 7373 in your logging software.

I know this doesn't answer your question, but for the cost of the batteries and
time, you can get a nice shiny new dual-band Baofeng or Wouxun HT.

I have an radio shack HTX-202 and 404 that both need the internal batteries
replaced. I'm not confident doing it. Is there anyone that can help? Please let
me know. According to what I can find on the internet, in addition to the
battery I'll need to find the holders as well.

SUN HURLS PLASMA CLOUD TOWARD EARTH: Yesterday, Nov. 5th, a magnetic filament

plasma cloud could strike Earth's magnetic field on Nov. 8th, triggering
G1-class geomagnetic storms and auroras around the poles. Visit
