Re: [BVARC] OT: Cable modem and router recommendations

2020-10-12 Thread Larry via BVARC
I had a similar problem with Comcast, intermittent outages that would last
from 5 minutes to 3 or 4 hours, they kept telling me it was my equipment,
not their system. After replacing the modem, router and lastly the PC, the
problem continued.

I finally got them to come out to my house and they found the underground
coax from the pole to the house was bad!

The replacement drop from the pole to the house was installed overhead
because with all the radials I have in the back yard I was not going to let
them dig in the ground.

I did not mind replacing the modem and router as they were old and the new
hardware was faster.

If you buy a new modem, make sure it is on the Comcast/Infinity supported
device list.

My old Motorola modem was on the supported list when I bought it about 10
years earlier but was no longer on the supported list when I had these
problems.

The new modem is an Asus model: CM-16, the router is a TP-Link model:
AC-1750.

They are not the top of the line models, but they work fine with my 85 mbit
down speed.

Good luck.

I am starting to have service dropouts every afternoon (weird) with Comcast
and am thinking maybe I need to replace may more than a decade old cable
modem and router. I currently have a Motorola SUFboad SB6141 cable modem and
a Netgear N900 Dual Band Gigabit router. I seem to have these dropouts
between noon and 3pm every day. Anyone else having this problem with
Comcast?

Anyway I think maybe it is time to upgrade my equipment so looking for
recommendations.

I upgrade to the 2.1.0 version of WSJT-X and now I have zero power output on
FT8 so any chance of working E44WE is gone. Can someone tell me why a newer
version of software would destroy my power output? Can I go back to the
previous version so I can make contacts on FT8? I did tests and on cw digital
software my signals are 100 watts out. On FT8 now they are zero despite what
the meter says. PSKreportermap and hamspots say I have zero signal from WSJT-X.
I don't understand how a software upgrade can change my power to nothing. Sorry
I don't know how to go about fixing this. I am sending a message to the WSJT
group and I've looked at all their documentation. When you upgrade to try and
work a rare DX and the software ruins your chances that is truly frustrating.
Anyone have any suggestions?

I am very much interested in being a part of the new VE testing program.

The restart of BVARC testing will begin on Saturday, February 2nd and 10:30 am
at Bayland Park (off Bissonnet).
Please contact me for being added on to the list of available VE's.

The testing will be monthly, on this date (for now) at Bayland Park. We'll also
have testing at the Greater Houston Hamfest in March.

One of the reasons we've moved the testing date and location, is this coincides
with the monthly board meeting (and Hamfest meeting).

Rick,

Your dedication to keeping BVARC and its activities alive are now becoming
legendary. My earliest recollections of you and BVARC go back to 1992. Since
then, you have tirelessly contributed your precious time and energy to making
the BVARC programs successful. You have been doing this for so long that I
almost take it for granted.

Thank you for all you do for BVARC. You are the best!!!. WE really appreciate
everything you do.

A big thank you for a great night last evening at the Chili Supper. 44 folks
in attendance enjoyed a wide selection of chili, even the Cajun style, and a
rogue pot of spaghetti. 10 different chili entre's along with stuff jalapenos
(my personal favorite), plenty of add-ons and condiments, plus a multitude of
desserts from fresh apples to cup cakes and a very dark chocolate cake.

We also had elections. Mark Janzer is again V.P., Scott Medbury is again a 2
Year At Large Director and Jimmy Vance is the 1 Year At Large Director. After
it was all over Jeff Greer stepped forward to handle the Corresponding
Secretary spot. A special thanks to these folks for stepping up to the plate
to help run the club. Disappointing that we had no one nominated for the
2019-2020 Treasurer spot. So keep your eyes pealed for a number cruncher
amongst our ranks

Set up and tear down ran smoothly due to the special help of Kelli Medbury and
Daphne Rawlinson. Thank you, Ladies. Many others pitched in to assist also.
The room looked good coming in and going out. All of your assistance was
greatly appreciated.

The lucky raffle winning Ham that now has a Station in a Box is Walter
Bazarsky, W5KFL. Congratulations Walter.

Again, thanks to all for a great evening.

Re: [BVARC] HELP! Computer video is hosed again!

2017-12-09 Thread Larry via BVARC

Yeah, the latest updates gray-out the “restore earlier version” tab. This is a
problem with the AMD chip set in older PC’s. PCs with Intel chips set don’t
have a problem. Now you’ve got to restore an earlier version of the operating
system( earlier version of Win10).

Go to settings in the startup display. Click on the “Update & Security” tab,
then click on “view installed update history”, then click on “recovery
options”, under Go back to the previous version of Win10, click on “get
started”. This will restore the previous version where the video worked OK. It
will take a while.

There are methods on the web for permanently blocking window update from
installing new video drivers but I have not tried this yet.

Well, I did it again! I let Windows do an update BEFORE the contest (I knew it
was a bad idea) and now it once again does not recognize my video card and has
reduced the resolution and will not span across two monitors. Last time this
happened, K5LJ suggested I roll back the video driver and that worked, but this
time the option to do that is grayed out. Surely, someone know how to fix this
for me.

The computer is an older HP running WIN 10 (upgraded for WIN 7) with an AMD
chipset and an ATI Radeon HD 4200 video card. I have a new computer purchased,
but it’s still in the box…. There must be a way! If you have the answer, call,
email or text me!

BTW, the ARRL 10 Meter contest conditions suck, but there are occasional
contacts to be made.

This morning I looked at my station monitors and the resolution had reverted to
1024x768 and the video adapter does not recognize both monitors (the same
display shows on both monitors but I cannot do a split screen). I rebooted and
it said it could not recognize my personalized settings. I was able to set the
resolution to 1280 x 1024 “Recommended” but the monitors will handle a lot
higher resolution than that.

Recommendations from the collective group?

Gayle,
What’s your SWR? If you’ve got hi SWR the output fold-back circuitry will
reduce output. and you will only see full output in a key-down (CW) mode. Voice
has a low duty factor so you would only see a low average power output in that
circumstance.
