Re: [BVARC] Police/Fire call listening on UHF/VHF

2017-08-31 Thread Sam Neal via BVARC
Hello,

The Icom R-7000 general coverage multi-mode ( AM/FM/CW/SSB ) scanner/receivers
which covered from 25 MHz to about 2 gHz covered the 800/900 range with no
frequencies blocked.

I still have one, but they are useless for monitoring the present digital
transmissions.

congress passed a law prohibiting listening to analog cell phone calls when
someone published a congressmans phone conversation. if i remember this was
in the 800 mhz band. the early serial numbers of the icom w32a were capable
ot tuning where it should not. later after law was passed icom had to block
the freqs.

Hello,

I'm too far and too old to assist. Just a pointer - if you buy sacks of
readi-mix for your cement, each bag ( should be marked on the bag ) is one
cubic foot. Eight bags should fill the 2X2X2 hole.

A cubic yard would take 27 sacks at one cubic foot each.

Tower guys:

I'm seriously contemplating and soon buying a

US Towers ALM-31, crank-up, fold-over tower

for my Tex Hex beam which requires a 2' x 2' x 2'

(about a cubic yard) of concrete base. Does

anyone have a suggestion regarding someone

to dig and fill the hole?

I will have anchor bolt forms and all re-bar work

done ahead of the dig/pour. I'm 77 and just had a

double (yes!) hip joint replacement and can't really

dig such a hole nice and square. Also, I have no

concrete experience and you only get one chance

at a good pour.

Re: [BVARC] Taking Your Grid Square To 10 Places

Hello. Bruce,

After re-reading it, I see I wasn't clear. My home and shack are 35 plus
miles inside EM20.

I was referring to the 9-th and 10-th place on the grid square that is jk for
the shack and JJ for the house.

..

Subject: Re: [BVARC] Taking Your Grid Square To 10 Places

It is very rare for a house to split a Grid Square although it could. A
Grid Square is two letters (base 18) followed by two numbers (base 10).
This is referred to as the Field and Square. A subsquare (base 24) makes
the location a bit more exact and another extended square (base 10) even
more exact) Going further with extended squares only makes the accuracy
of the point you are trying to identify more accurate. However, your
Grid Square will never change, it is always the first two letters
followed by the second two numbers.

Nizar,

I was taught using the technique or something very similar while a teenager. I
progressed rapidly to between 20 and 25 wpm. My perception was that learning
the code was easy. Even today I know the letters (and many words) as sounds.

Call ahead to Fry's Electronics. Their 12 AWG did not break the bank in a
small spool. Without an account or part number, the larger companies would
charge too much for a small order of this 10 AWG. You did not specify 120 VAC
or 12 VDC use, as the insulation can be quite different*. Any heavier, and you
could check with a welding supply house.
Many automotive jumper cables are fine if you are in a hurry, yet they are a
bit bulky and AWG too low if you really need 10 AWG. Folks at hamfests
sometimes will buy the extra jumper cable 'clips', for a dollar or so.

Re: [BVARC] Bleeding static from antennas

2016-05-24 Thread Sam Neal via BVARC

Hello,

Should the filter cap short, the RF choke from the antenna connector to
ground
would not be affected.

In the older boat anchor radios, the 2.5 milli-Henry RF choke at the coax
connector to ground actually did nothing, until the RF coupling capacitor
that
keeps B+ off the antenna shorts, allowing B+ onto the antenna. Then it acts
to
short the B+ to ground, hopefully blowing the radio's fuse in the process. It
also keeps the unsuspecting operator from having 500 + Volts on their wire
antenna and not knowing it.

In the case I mentioned, again, it does nothing until there is a surge of
static charge, and then it shorts this to ground, probably only a few MA, and
since the RF choke was designed for 500 MA or so ( if a RF choke from an
amplifier is used ), it should have a long life.

As someone else pointed out, a high value resistor would bleed the static
charge,
it would not short the B+ to ground should the coupling cap short.

So, say the cap does short, placing B+ on the antenna...the DC short to
ground thru the choke does what?Heats the choke and then it blows up?
Shorts the B+ to Gnd and kills the HV PS?

I can see the benefit, but looks like it is a "fuse".

Can you tell me the "designed for" scenario with a shorted HV cap?

I would think so. If you can get the RF choke out of an old junque amplifier .
Those chokes handled 500 milli-amperes +- in normal service. Bleeding static
shouldn't be a problem unless you get a direct hit.

Hello,

Consider placing a 2.5 mH RF choke from the antenna to ground. Keep it in a
dry place. Many of the old boat-anchor transmitters did this from the antenna
coax connector to ground to protect the operator or anyone from touching the
antenna should the RF coupling capicator between the tube plate and the
pi-net
tuner open up placing B+ on the antenna.

[BVARC] Houston Radio History

2016-05-23 Thread Sam Neal via BVARC

Hello,

I have that photo with some of the names " somewhere " in one of my folders,
but couldn't find it. The following is a good history of radio in Houston,
broadcast radio and TV.

Go to " The Pre-Broadcast Era " for an earlier history of ham radio in
Houston, plus I have a link to " Amateur Radio 100 Years Ago In Houston "
should anyone be interested and should I find it in the 500 + link folder.

I was KN5LZJ in 1957 and attended my first radio club meeting at one of the
old 50's auctions at The Houston Amateur Radio Club, not on Lozier Street, but
the earlier one nearby right off of OST.

[BVARC] Off Subject - 2 MHz Galveston Marine Operator Info

2015-07-27 Thread Sam Neal via BVARC
Hello,

In 1964 I was employed by Lorac Service Corporation, a company that provided
HF navigational aids for seismograph boats operating along the Texas and
Louisiana gulf coast in the 1.7 MHz range, long before GPS. Our HF ( AM )
communications frequencies were in the 2 and 5 MHz range.

One of the outstanding AM signals in the 2 MHz range at that time was the
Galveston Marine Operator which provided 24 hour phone patches from the
mainland to ships in the Gulf - again, long before cell phones. I think, but
am not sure, that the transmitter was located near Pearland. If anyone out
there remembers or has any information on this 2 MHz operation, I would like
to contact you for more information on this station. I am interested in, among
other things, who operated this station, and any/all descriptions of the
equipment/antennas/power, ect.

Thanks 73,

2015-05-17 Thread Sam Neal via BVARC
Hello Ralph,

For you - such a deal. I am way too far from Houston to be involved in ATV.
Several years ago I bought a ATV transmitter - used ( 420=439 MHz range ) that
I will never use. If you want it, it's yours free and I pay the postage. I
bought it off of e-bay and it was advertised as working. No antenna and no
camera. You should be able to find a schematic off of BAMA ( Boat Anchor
Manuals Archives ).

I do not know how much activity there is on this band in Houston, the other
person who responded to your info request may be able to help with that.

There's a touch of fall in the air and we're seeing some gas prices under
$3.00 so the weather and gas gods are smiling on the 17 Texas mobiles and
numerous fixed stations just in time for the Big Enchilada of state QSO
parties which will be running in two sessions this coming weekend.

Session 1: 1400 UTC Saturday - 0200 UTC Sunday Session 2: 1400 UTC Sunday -
2000 UTC Sunday

Send paper logs to:
TQP Committee,
24415 Deep Meadow Dr
Tomball, TX 77375

Email logs to: no5w.ch...@gmail.com

Currently the activity maps at www.txqp.net is showing that 228 of the 254
counties will be on the air in one mode or another and once the remaining
mobile plans are submitted and possibly with some reshuffling of a mobile
route or two we should have all 254 on the air.

So its a great opportunity to see if you can work more than 200 Texas
counties in a single weekend. It's only been done by a handful, the all-time
leader being K4OJ who worked all 254 way back in time, followed closely by
W2GD(253) in the same year. And in recent years only WA3HAE(227),
KB9OWD(217), VE3KZ(215), N6MU(215), N5LZ(213), KV8Q(213), N4PN(213),
WA6KHK(212), VE3KZ(210), N4PN(201), K0DEQ(200), and K5KG(200) have reached
the 200 county level. So tune in to the Texas QSO Party this weekend and
give it your best shot at making the Lonestar 200 Club.
