Re: [BVARC] Satellites -- 2m -- 70cm -- antennas

2024-05-12 Thread Scott Medbury via BVARC
With a single dual band Ht I often found that in working the analog FM
birds, my best antenna was a Pryme AL-800 telescoping whip about 32 inches
long. I made over 8000 QSOs using only a good Dual band radio in half or
full duplex and that antenna.Take care to protect the connector. DO NOT
often point the antenna at the bird. Use anything metallic for a reflector
from a car surface to a manhole cover to steel drums to a ships deck. Water
makes a good reflector. Hint: point the antenna down. If you don't hear the
bird, don't transmit.

Hope this helps.

Dr. Bob Heil, K9EID, is now a Silent Key. Bob fought a valiant, year-long
battle with cancer, and passed peacefully surrounded by his family. Bob's
lifelong passion for amateur radio was clear to everyone involved in the hobby.
Everything Bob did for the betterment and growth of amateur radio - from his
instructional handbooks and countless presentations to his support of the ARRL
and youth programs - was based on the foundation and spirit of service. Bob was
an Elmer to all of us. While Bob's presence will dearly be missed, his impact
on the hobby and everyone in it will forever be felt.

\RIP Bob .

[BVARC] Greater Houston Hamfest

2024-02-21 Thread Scott Medbury via BVARC
I have made the decision at this time to focus my attention on my family
rather than hamfest participation. Those who know me also know that do not
say this lightly.

My reasoning is the following.
On Monday the 12th my daughter in law gave birth to our first grandbaby 4
weeks early.
Late that evening baby Elizabeth was transported to Texas Children's
neonatal ICU to be treated for complications due to her early emergency
birth.

She is doing very well now, but I feel that my family needs me more than
the club at this time.

We have no idea at this time how long she will be there.

We are anticipating a good crowd so I would think at least 20 medium size

If someone wants to bring chips and questions, that's welcome as well as
stuffed jalapeños. Chili, cheese, onions and fritos are all taken care of.

We will have Coffee, iced tea and water to drink.

Re: [BVARC] Charging for QSL?

Often because of the cost of postage a DX station will request "green
stamps". International postage from the US is about $1.40 to send them a
card. If you use clublog, you can send a request and use PayPal. All of
this is part of the reason why so many including myself use LOTW to get
confirmation.

You can also use the outgoing ARRL qsl bureau.

Somehow, I do not think all the rest were playing bingo at the VFW.

each and $5.00 for parking in advance. There is a Processing Fee Per Ticket.
On the day of the game, parking is $10.00. I will be seated in Section 7 Row
G Seat 10.

No Cash is accepted anywhere in the ball park, this includes the Galaxy
