[BVARC] Fwd: New comment on "EFHW Antenna Simulation Using MMANA GAL"

2024-05-05 Thread Stephen Flowers via BVARC
Colleagues,
Good evening. A nice comment from a Japanese amateur radio operator on the
video I made for using MMANA-GAL to simulate the EFHW antenna!

Very interesting that the EFHW seems to be quite a popular antenna for hams
around the globe!

Hey André,
Yes, 12m FT8 was dead earlier today. Then 3G0YA called and the band blew up!
LOL Just checked and 12m seems to be dead again though. Interesting.

Josh,
Good afternoon. Welcome! It was a fun event to be sure. I kept getting this
fellow on CW giving his callsign as TI5JON and I stubbornly replying to him:
“KI5JON ?”. It turned out that he was indeed a TI station in Costa Rica and
not a KI station from the US!

Re: [BVARC] CW questions

2024-01-16 Thread Stephen Flowers via BVARC
KJ5DOB,
Good morning. Just to add to what Joseph mentioned, there is also an OFF
setting for BKIN. So that one may be what you want to select. Additionally
you can drop the output power to 0 and replace your antenna with a dummy load.
That should make for a good practice oscillator.

Also, to echo Seth’s advise I’d say join a CW club that offers classes. My
experience with the Long Island CW club (LICW) has been very good.

Best of luck in your CW journey!

Re: [BVARC] Solar effect

2024-01-05 Thread Stephen Flowers via BVARC
Hey Mike,
Good afternoon. You are correct. CMEs are composed of massive particles, e.g.
protons, electrons, etc. Solar flares are photons. Since photons travel at c
they get here in ˜8.2 minutes, regardless of frequency. Matter particles
travel sub-light and so, depending on their mass, ejection energy, & angle to
the earth (curved trajectory) take ˜20 to ˜48 hours or so to get here.

Also correct regarding charged particles bringing E fields with them. The
CME particles create B fields due to their motion since they have a net
electrical charge. (Del x B ˜ J + Edot). What’s interesting is that that the
orientation of the B fields in the particles couple well or not so well to our
ionosphere and depending on that create strong or weak auroras.

BTW, this info is new and changing since it’s an area of research. Every new
probe sent to the sun deepens our understanding of the phenomena going on in
the sun & how it affects us. Or even better, comes up with new solar physics.

Interesting topic.

Re: [BVARC] Antenna Article Understanding Help Needed

2023-12-06 Thread Stephen Flowers via BVARC
Colleagues,
Good afternoon. Excellent work done by Rick W5RH on contacting the authors and
getting info on their antenna.

If you’re interested, this is a quick walk-through I made on antenna modeling
using the program called MMANA GAL. It’s similar to the EZNEC program and I
believe it contains the same processing engine as EZNEC; however, you may find
the GUI simpler.

Understanding Phase Noise: Introduction to Phase Noise

Phase noise is one of the most important performance characteristics of
radio-frequency devices, and this webinar provides a practical technical
introduction to phase noise and how phase noise is measured using both spectrum
analyzers and dedicated phase noise analyzers. In addition to discussing phase
noise fundamentals, a brief overview of more advanced phase noise-related
measurements will also be provided.

What you will learn:
Why phase noise is important in modern radio frequency applications
How phase noise is measured using spectrum analyzers
How phase noise is measured using phase noise analyzers

Re: [BVARC] Gigaparts New Store Survey - Location.

2023-10-18 Thread Stephen Flowers via BVARC
Hey Jeff,
Good evening. Just voted for Houston in the Gigaparts survey. As you said,
the link's about in the middle of the webpage, click on the hyperlink
https://www.gigaparts.com/Huntsville & then scroll down to "More locations to
come, click here to vote for our next location”.

A GP store in Houston would balance the HRO location in Plano. Also, with all
the Oil & Gas tech centers located here, there should be a critical mass for
B2B services and the associated retail.

Thanks for letting us know about this!

Re: [BVARC] CW POTA at Huntsville State Park

2023-10-10 Thread Stephen Flowers via BVARC
Hey Craig,
Thank you for the comment. Yes, I would recommend the LICW
<https://longislandcwclub.org/>. It has become routine for me to join a few of
the classes weekly and see many of the same friendly faces from all around the
US & the world.

In the classes, we practice CW QSO protocol, copying callsigns, sending &
copying jokes on CW, all in a laid back atmosphere with no pressure. So
practicing becomes part one’s routine, sorta like the old TV show “Cheers”
where “everybody knows your name”.

Hope that helps.

Re: [BVARC] IC 7300 for sale - one owner

2023-09-17 Thread Stephen Flowers via BVARC
Hey Theresa,
I understand. The IC 7300 is a great radio I think. I particularly like the
latest firmware which lets you configure the radio for “FT8" with a single
button. No need for multiple menu setting changes. The 7300 has an internal
sound card so there’s no need for a "Signalink box” to run FT8, all that’s
needed is the (included) USB cable.

By the way, looking in my shack, I have a Xiegu G90 I'll be selling also. This
one’s great for POTA & comes with accessories such as: the foldable kick stand,
the CE-19 breakout box, the blue USB CAT control cable, external sound card,
and cables that let it run FT8. Xiegu G90 & accessories for $400.

FYI I’m not getting out of the hobby, far from it. I plan to sell these radios
and get another one.

Please contact me if interested.

73,
Stephen (W2WF)

Re: [BVARC] Marine frequency wanted

2023-01-17 Thread Stephen Flowers via BVARC
Hey Jeff,
Yea I monitor channel 16 in the main radio below deck and on the portable “HT”
topside when in Galveston Bay and in the Gulf. Interestingly, channel 16 is
also monitored when sailing off the coast of Sicily, Italy.

Either way, when we make contact in 16, we immediately switch or QSY to 69, 70,
or one of the other designated channels in that neighborhood.

73 & keep sailing!
