The event begins June 1, z(UTC) to June 2nd 2359z(UTC) - Which for local

We're only operating Friday afternoon through Saturday early afternoon. The
Museum has other activities on Saturday overnight through Sunday morning that
preclude our use.BVARC is paying a flat fee to the museum, for the event. This
enables a staff member to be present while we're aboard.
Overnight berthing requires a fee of $25 per person (Museum policy). If you are
on board for overnight radio ops, the berthing fee will apply.
You do not need to pay a berthing fee to attend, as long as you're not staying
overnight.
We arrive Friday afternoon, set-up in the galley and the Stewart radio room.We
clean-up and vacate the galley area by 2pm on Saturday.
To participate - respond to this email with your plans to attend.I'll then be
able to add you to the list of participants for "free" entry into the park.

As some of you may have seen, the annual Museum Ships Weekend (MSWE) is June
4th to the 6th.
The historic ships at Seawolf Park on Pelican Island in Galveston will come to
life as part of an annual worldwide event commemorating their service. This
year, BVARC will be hosting MSWE in the radio room of the destroyer escort, the
USS Stewart.
BVARC members as well as visiting amateur radio operators (all pre-registered
w/BVARC) will be on the air from the Stewart and communicating with the 70+
other historic vessels in the United States and around the world. Due to the
unique situation of Seawolf Park having the USS Cavalla at the same location,
any contact will provide an extra claimed ship QSO contact. We'll also have a
2nd station for the SS Selma (a WW1, concrete hulled merchant class tanker).
During MSWE, the public (fee to enter museum required) may come and visit the
operators during the weekend, observing the contacts being made. The schedule
for the weekend will begin on Friday afternoon and end early Sunday afternoon.
Two operating positions are planned with SSB and CW modes available. PSK may be
also be used during the weekend if enough operators are available. The schedule
break down is:
Per the MSWE site: The event begins June 5th z(UTC) to June 6th 2359z(UTC)
- Which for local time on Pelican Island is 7pm Friday to 6:59pm Sunday. Set-up
5 pm Friday (Set-up may take longer but hopefully a station will be operating
by 7 pm)Operating time 7pm Saturday to 1pm Sunday (depending on conditions)Tear
down 1 pm to 3 pm Sunday Operators (and only scheduled
operators) volunteering for the overnight shift will be able to stay within the
museum grounds after public hours.
Tentatively the 2m talk-in frequency will be 146.940, minus offset, 167.9 tone.
The main meal Saturday evening will be as traditionally catered by Leon's World
Famous BBQ (unless there is a crew mutiny demanding otherwise).
To sign-up for a shift(s), bring equipment, volunteer for set-up or tear down
or just obtain more information contact me, Mark Janzer, K5MGJ at

that have already signed up, and those that respond to this email (off list
please). The Brazos Valley Amateur Radio Club is grateful for the enthusiastic
support of the Cavalla Historical Foundation, Galveston Naval Museum and the
Galveston Park Board of Trustees for their permission to be aboard the vessels
and the use of the park facilities. We look forward to continued future
activity and expansion of BVARC’s involvement of MSWE. This involvement allows
us, in our own way, to honor those who served their country at sea and to
support Galveston Parks.

let me know when you'll be there and - if operating after 7pm - if you'll want
overnight accommodations.
Also let me know what equipment you might bring. Currently I have equipment for
the SS Selma (including a logging computer).
Only those members operating at night will have bunk space. There are
limitations this year due to safety renovations in parts of the ships.
I'll put together a roster and let participants know the "ropes", during this
upcoming week.
Happy Memorial Day weekend!

2017-06-05 Thread Paul Noll via BVARC
Hello everyone,
I'm new here and just joined BVARC. I missed out on the Museum Ships Weekend
due to prior plans. Would have liked to have gone down south and joined in.
I know that Field Day is coming up and I would like to help out with set up if
possible out at the fire station. Im wanting to learn as much as possible and
think there is no better way to do that than to be around people who are
experienced so I hope I'm not intruding. I'm new to HF and only have a
Technician license currently but am working toward getting my General and any
help toward that goal would be greatly appreciated !!
I have been an aircraft mechanic for 33 years and have had "some" radio com
experience as it relates to that industry so its not all foreign to me. Still
have a LOT to learn though !!!

Anyway, just wanted to say hello and I look forward to meeting all of you.

Re: [BVARC] Museum Ships Weekend

2017-06-05 Thread Scott Medbury via BVARC
Gayle,

The bands were not kind on HF, but we were there. We also had some antenna and
radio problems early. Down there we had a hard time picking up the TEXAS, but
did. I heard the Lexington, but they had a pileup working. The net took place
and the Elissa, Texas, Cavalla and Stuart were there. The cool thing about
Museum Ships is that ANY band is fair game as it is NOT a contest. 17 meters
opened up and was a good place to spend a couple of hours.

I was on 10 meters for a while, but it was dead until almost 5PM when it opened
to YV Land (Venezuela). Hopefully the sun will cooperate more during Field Day.

We will have a GOTA station set up on Field Day and ALL Techs will have an
opportunity to operate on 10, 15, 20 and 40. We get bonus points if you make 20
QSOs while operating GOTA, so I will be looking for YOU!

We will also have a 2 meter station looking for contacts on SIMPLEX FM and
possibly SSB as well. So you will have lots of opportunities to get your feet
wet.

Hi Gayle:
My name is Leslie, ad5wb.I was on site with the Elissa.
I am sorry you could not hear us.Conditions this year were marginal to say the
least. We often went 15 minutes between successful contacts.]
Saturday we were on 40, 20 and 17 phone; and 20 cw.We tried 10 meter phone as
well.Yes the 2 pm net took place but Richmond is a long way for the repeater in
Texas City.Sunday:  even with all the storms we were on 20 phone, 20 cw and
took shots at 10 and 17 phone. All said we only had a little over 400 unique
contacts when we shut down Sunday afternoon.
It was not the best of showings for us!

Most of the weekend the ships were on 20, conditions weren't the greatest, we
did get a few DX. The entire BVARC op had around 200 Q's though we haven't
compiled the various logs yet. The 2m net, 2pm-3pm, on the Tidelands ARC
repeater, on Saturday netted over a dozen takers. The Elissa and the Texas were
busy as well. Sunday was pretty much rained out.

Once the logs are compiled, a more accurate report will follow.

Folks,

Rather than confuse everyone with UTC, just remember that the actual operating
time for Museum Ships in our local CSDT time zone is from Friday, June 2, 2017
at 7:00 pm until Sunday, June 4, 2017 at 7:00 pm (two full days, locally
adjusted from UTC (GMT or Zulu, take your pick)! The local time corresponds to
the hours UTC on June 3 to 2400 hours June 4, the 48 hour time over which
this world-wide event takes place. Don’t anyone wash their car, as we do not
want rain this year!!!

Obviously, there will need to be a couple of hours for setup prior to the
event, and after the event for tear down.

Don’t forget to let Mark Janzer know you want to be there so you can be placed
on the list for free entry. Not on the list? You can come anyway, but you will
have to pay admission like the general public. Email Mark directly at

[BVARC] Museum Ships Weekend - Report of the confirmation and figuring reconnoiter - Sunday January 15th

2017-01-20 Thread mark janzer via BVARC
The work day went well on Sunday (1/15) thanks to all who showed up! We had 8
BVARCians aboard.

   - We were able to remove the broken vertical and trace/test the previously
installed coax back to the radio room.
   - We also temporarily hung a wire antenna from the open bridge to the flag
pole at the bow. We extended one of the coax leads through a porthole we opened
in the bridge. This antenna was tested and appears to work well.
   - We were pleased to find that the coding closet was already cleaned up and
organized, and we'll keep it this way. There is a reel of coax there (BVARC's)
which we'll retain there for future use (maybe elsewhere or in the Cavalla).
   - On leaving, we took down the temporary antenna and removed the scraps of
the broken antenna.
   - We weren't able to retrieve the box of BVARC "junque" that is stored
elsewhere on the ship. We'll get that in due course.

For a future visit, we're hoping to install a marine grade VHF/UHF antenna
where the broken antenna was removed. We're also looking at how we might add
temporarily, either an HF vertical or 80m long wire (say, to the stern) for the
MSWE event. We may even try to activate the Cavalla, depending on how other
We also want to time our visit better that we can do a radio demo for the
scouts. The visit yesterday, actually wasn't conducive for a demo, due to the
other efforts we made.

Weekend event Friday June 3rd (7 pm) through Sunday the 5th (7 pm) at Seawolf
Park and at/on the USS Stewart (destroyer escort) and the USS Cavalla

from all over the world, to enable the amateur community, at large, the
opportunity to contact these historic museum entities and receive written
confirmation of the contact. Maritime museums, maritime memorials, historic
aircraft, and other appropriate entities also participate. Many, if not most of
the ships participating in MSW have an active and ongoing relationship with an
amateur radio club or group.

We've met with the park and the UWC, and we're welcome to come back. We've
still a variety of details to work out, so stay tuned.
Meanwhile, let us know level of involvement, hours available, equipment to
bring, etc. offline. The past need not be discussed on the email thread, the
past is past. We're out to have a fun event, to the mutual benefit of the park
and the UWC.
