Re: [BVARC] Test your antenna

2022-08-01 Thread Rick Hiller via BVARC
I often wondered the same thing when trying to use a Wheeler Cap to measure
efficiency (HI)

So, just be practical. Simply load your L so that it is physically the size
of a 100 MHz antenna, as this is where the measurement ranges of this
device starts. 100 MHz to 140 GHz is the spec.So a 1/50 th size 160 MX
HF antenna can indeed be measured. That is if you can get power into it as
the Feed Z is only about 2/100ths of an ohm.

But I do wonder if the associated software will measure and analyze into
the Low VHF and HF ranges? Probably not.

An interesting project for the weekend. Hi. 73...Rick -- W5RH

Test gear for the shack

Even if you don't build radio gear, test equipment has a wide variety of uses
in the shack. Here at SOTABEAMS we have a fully equipped lab with all the test
gear you could ask for but the most used bit of gear is our
LCR45
 meter. This inexpensive unit measures resistance, capacitance and inductance.
We use it for checking feeder cables (50 Ohm cable has a capacitance of 100pF/m
so we can use an LCR meter to check feeder lengths. Three years ago we used to
stock a small range of test gear from local company Peak Electronics, now that
we have moved and have more shelf space, we have started stocking this great
gear again.

We are stocking these handy items:

  *
LCR45
 an automatic meter for measuring inductance, capacitance and resistance..
  *
DCA55
 a very clever semiconductor analyser - superb value-for-money!
  *
DCA75
 an even more sophisticated semiconductor analyser with computer software
  *
ZEN50
 a Zener diode tester
  *
SCR100
 Triac and Thyristor Analyser

My pick for two great instruments would be the
LCR45
 and the
DCA55.
 Check out my
blog
 for a brief review of these great instruments. Also don't miss out on our
special offer below!

FT-817 Speech Processor

***up to 6dB apparent gain***

Previously only available as a kit, we can supply this handy speech processor

Only SOTABEAMS provides this unit built!

This little speech processor has proved hugely popular with batches selling out

2014-09-28 Thread Rick Hiller via BVARC
JN,
depending on the fundamental and wave shape, the ham band rfi could be from
another freq outside the ham freqs.
keep going lower in freq to find the fundamental but it could be below rf into
ultrasonic or even af like a swithing PS rfi.
ARRL has some good stuff on mobile rfi as does alan applegate forgot his call,
the mobile info oasis web site.
GL. W5RH
psrfi can sneak in on ant or on the power cables so pull the antenna/ coax
and sniff with power only too.

Gents:

Just fired up the ol' smoldering iron and built a RF sniffer (show and tell in
December); hooked it up to an AOR 3000 communications receiver (60kHz to
2.2GHz) and behold, it seems to work. Now to go after my Hybrid. Should I sniff
on the ham frequencies or does it really matter?

[BVARC] Test new car for RF noise

2014-09-27 Thread Allen R. Brier via BVARC
I am test driving a 2013 Ford Explorer and wondered if I could get someone's
help tomorrow to test it for RF noise. If you have a portable SW receiver or
HF radio, or one in your vehicle, I would like to either have you come over
to my place or I can come by yours to test it. I have one but don't have a
portable resonant antenna available. I need to do it early, say before noon
or 1 pm as I have something else I must do in the afternoon.

Please call me on my cell phone number below.

Thanks,

Sorry, you cannot receive A+ because that would be unfair to those who tried
but did not succeed. Although you undoubtedly deserve an A+, we are not
permitted to award such a grade due to the bad feelings and low self-esteem it
would invoke in the underachievers.

In accordance with the politically correct KumBayah grading guidance scheme,
the best you can get is a “C”
