Love the dance, but I can't stand coconut, in pie or anything else.

I recently met a delightful local guy who grew up playing for his father in
southwestern NH, who promised to sing me the whole dance when we meet
again next week! I will duly write it down and share it here.

A2: Partner allemande L 1.5

Coconut Cream Pie is the same as Apple Pie Quadrille in the A1-B1. Apple Pie
quadrille is a 5-part dance, and I found the progression tricky when there were
new dancers in the hall. Also, not all bands have a 5-part tune. So far, I've
never seen Coconut Cream Pie fall apart, even with a large percentage of new
dancers. You can have 5 or 6 or 3 people in the stars, and as long as they get
back to where they started, it's OK.

Re: [Callers] Oh, Johnny

2013-07-06 Thread Linda Mrosko
I've got 1-2 versions

This version can be done as a Square or Big Circle:

Now you all join hands and circle the ring
Stop where you are and give your partner/honey a swing
(for beginners, use elbows - PR/NL)
And now you swing that little girl behind you
Leave her alone, go back & swing your own
(w/elbows - 2x round)
Then you allemande left with your corner girl
Do-Si-Do around your own
Now you all promenade - with the sweet corner maid
Singin’ Oh, Jimmy, Oh, Jimmy, Oh!

Now you all join hands and circle the ring
Stop where you are and give your partner a swing
And now you swing that little girl behind you
Swing your own if you’ve found that she’s not flown
Then you allemande left with your corner girl
Do-Si-Do around your own
Now you all promenade - with the sweet corner maid
Singin’ Oh, Jimmy, Oh, Jimmy, Oh!

Now you all join hands and circle the ring
Stop where you are and give your partner a swing
Now swing that corner girl, right there behind you
Go back and swing your own, like a chicken in the breadpan kickin’ up dough
Allemande left now with your left hand
Sashay around your own
Now you all promenade - with the sweet corner maid
Singin’ Oh Jimmy, Oh Jimmy, Oh!

This version was taken from a Joe Lewis recording:

OH JOHNNY! OH! (Caller: Joe Lewis)

INTRO: It's just oh, Johnny! Oh, Johnny! Oh!

ON THE BEAT: Figure
All join hands and circle the ring
Stop where you are & give your gal a couple of swings
Then swing that corner girl right there behind you
Go back & you swing your own
Put the rosin on the bow & here we go
Well, almd left now w/your left hand
Do-Si (sashay) around your own
(Sashay around, i.e., Mad Robin figure; but you can have them
Do-Si-Do- I use the term "Do-Si" & dancers know what it means)
Take that corner girl & prom. that corner maid singin'
Oh, Johnny! Oh, Johnny! Oh!

CHORUS:
All join hands & circle to the call
Now take your own & you swing at the wall
Do-Si your corner lady, right there behind you
See saw your pretty little taw
You see & saw all over the hall
Well, almd left and you almd right
Then almd left again
Now you take your own
And you run away home, singin'
Oh, Johnny! Oh, Johnny! Oh!

All join hands & circle the ring
Stop where you are & give your gal a swing & swing
Then swing that corner girl, she's right there behind you
Go back & swing your own
Put the rosin on the bow (phutt!), here we go
Well, almd left now w/your left hand
Do-Si (go sashay) around your own
Take that corner girl & prom. that corner maid, singin'
Oh, Johnny! Oh, Johnny! Oh!

All join hands & circle to the call
Now take your own & you swing at the wall
Do-Si your corner lady, right there behind you
See saw your pretty little taw
___(4)
Well, almd left and you almd right
Then almd left again
Now you take your own
And you run away home, singin'
Oh, Johnny! Oh, Johnny! Oh!

All join hands & circle the ring
Stop, stop & give your gal a couple of swings
Then swing that corner girl, right there behind you
Go back & swing your own
Like a chicken in the bread pan peckin' out dough
It's almd left now w/your left hand
Do-Si (go sashay) around your own
Take that corner girl & promenade
Promenade singin'
Oh, Johnny! Oh, Johnny! Oh!

All join hands & circle to the call
Now take your own & you swing at the wall
Do-Si your corner lady, right there behind you
See saw your pretty little taw
___(4)
Well, almd left and you almd right
Then almd left again
Now you take your own
And you run away home, singin'
Oh, Johnny! Oh, Johnny! Oh!

All join hands & circle to the Right!
Stop where you are & swing this girlie goodnight
Now swing your corner girl, right there behind you
Go back & swing your own
Like a chicken in the bread pan kickin' out dough
Well, almd left now w/your left hand
Do-Si around your own
Promenade that corner maid, she's your own, singin'
Oh, Johnny! Oh, Johnny! Oh!

TEACHING TIPS
“You all join hands and you circle the ring
Stop where you are and give your partner a swing”
So what you’re gonna do is you’ll take right elbows w/your partner - let’s
go back to beginning of circle - P on right - face them - face person
behind you corner - corner - partner. Sing “all join hands” - turn partner
R elbow, corner L elbow, back to partner & actually swing them (if elbows,
last partner part is 2x round) - turn back to corner, Alm L, DSD your own -
from the beginning again - DSD & stop. Now take corner in promenade -
singing - everybody sings - this is your new partner. New partner - new
corner behind you. Repeat

Re: [Callers] Coconut Cream Pie: easy 4-facing-4s

2013-07-06 Thread Mac Mckeever
Tina,

My error.  I haven't called APQ recently and now that I look at them side by
side they are very similar.  The major differences are that APQ is a 5 part
dance and the 5th part is what I always think of as the signature figure of the
dance.  CCP leaves out that part and adds the CA twirl instead.

However, that last part does include the progression - so it is not static.  It
does, however, lack the feature of most 4X4 where the couples change sides with
each other each time thru the dance.

It sounds like the version you have leaves out the last part - and I can
understand why you would not enjoy it as much

What I have is:

B2 is circle 8 all the way around
B3 (or C1 if you prefer) is
turn line inside out left gents lead
-inside out again - wider turn to progress

One thing that I enjoy while calling this dance is that B3 looks chaotic and
you think everyone is lost - but then it all comes together for the A1

Interesting, Mac. Now I wonder if we have different variations on the
Quadrille, because the only difference I see between that and Coconut Cream Pie
is the added B2 Bal the Ring/CA twirl that allows the dance to continue on in a
contra line formation rather than being static among the same 8 dancers. Would
you post your version?

Sure, Dorcas!  Here you go:

Coconut Cream Pie 4-facing-4  / Easy but interesting
Lynn Ackerson

A1   (8)   LL F
(8)   Center 4 - RH
star 1x (hands across)

A2   (8)   P – Al–L  1-½
(8)   Other 4
(outsides) RH Star 1x

B1    (16) P – B & Sw

B2    (8)   All 8 Circle L ½
(4)   Bal the ring
(4)   P - CA twirl

Ron Beeson's Apple Pie Quadrille is the same except the B2 is only Cir L all
the way around.

I recently met a delightful local guy who grew up playing for his father in
southwestern NH, who promised to sing me the whole dance when we meet
again next week! I will duly write it down and share it here.

Hi everyone,

I had the pleasure of calling Lynn Ackerson's 4x4 "Coconut Cream Pie" for the
first time last night. It was, forgive me, easy as pie for everyone to get -
which I suppose was her reason for writing it as it's a simplified version of
Apple Pie Quadrille. (It was also perfect for an American 4th of July weekend

Do you have other favorite, not too difficult, 4-facing-4 dances you're willing

are we thinking of the same dance?  I agree - this is a easy 4X4 and I like it
- but I don't see any resemblance to Apple Pie Quadrille - which I really like
to call - especially with newer dance groups.  I find it much easier than
Lynn's dance.

If you don't have the two collections of singing squares that Nils
Fredland has edited, you may want to check them out. In the case of Oh
Johnny, the chorus is a grand square.

Here are links to the CDSS store pages for the two collections.

I apparently scribbled this on a card after dancing it, but never got the
name and author. I?m also not completely confident that I wrote it
accurately so am hoping to find a video of it somewhere.

It?s improper.

A1 Star Rt 1/2 way; men drop out and loop behind partner as the women
continue to turn; men rejoin the star and all end up where they started
 Repeat

A2 Hey for four (I assume women start by the Left?)

B1 Partner Bal and Swg

B2 Women chain, Left hand star

Thanks for even considering helping me out with this.

The name is Of The Mills by John Gallagher

It can be found here:
http://www.quiteapair.us/calling/acdol/dance/acd_112.html

The A1 should be:

RHS 1/2, gents loop back to fall in behind partner
RHS 1/2, gents loop back at home and face across while the ladies
allemande R 3/4 to face partner

Hey starts passing partner by L shoulder

Is this possibly going to show up in your program saturday? It's a
great dance and it's been a long time since I've gotten to dance it.

CDSS just published Nils Fredland's work "New River Train, Square Dances from
the Collection of Keith Blackmon".  There's a lot of 30s-40s-50s popular songs
in that book.  Living in the area, I'm certainly biased, but I would hope some
of those might pick up popularity in the rest of the country.

Re: [Callers] Singing Calls

2013-07-06 Thread Joseph Kwiatkowski
CDSS just published Nils Fredland's work "New River Train, Square Dances
from the Collection of Keith Blackmon". There's a lot of 30s-40s-50s
popular songs in that book. Living in the area, I'm certainly biased,
but I would hope some of those might pick up popularity in the rest of
the country.

Hello folks,

I am considering a recording project that spans the gap between modern club dancing and traditional squares. From a traditional perspective, what are the most common singing calls in your area of the country? What are the most well received by the dancers? Are there any that you wish were available in an instrumental pre-recorded version?

My vision is to use traditional dance figures with traditional music in a format that club callers would use and that club dancers would enjoy. (That typically means 7x64 beats)

I have enjoyed Ralph Sweet's recent CD and Bob Dalsemer's two sets, Some of those songs would be appropriate for my project as well as songs like Goodbye My Lady Love, and many others.

I'd appreciate any input and/or suggestions.

Dave,

I came up with that variation on my own but that doesn't make me the
first to do so.

To me and others the variation is pretty obvious.
