Thanks for mentioning the personal preference for Give & Take, Ron! The timing
does seem to vary. But Larry Jennings, originator of the move, actually
preferred two steps forward, two steps back with your Partner, and then a 12
count swing. Larry liked his dancing “Zesty”!

[Callers] Mad Orbin, a new dance

2016-08-19 Thread QuiAnn2 via Callers
Hi, all!

Thanks to all those who responded about this dance. Both Bob Isaacs and Chris
Page don’t recognize the dance as already written so I think we’re good to go.
Would love to hear how it goes if you decide to call it. The title is not a
typo. The 2nd word is a play on words as a combination of robin+orbit.

I changed the choreography slightly in B1. I teach the “give and take” as a
ring balance, followed by the ladies drawing their Partner across the set. As
such, I’ve changed the timing to (4) and (12) rather than how I had it
originally as (8) and (8). That was just an oversight on my part when I
originally posted the dance.

I bow to the collective wisdom of this group about the dangers of a 1.25 circle in 8 counts.  I modified the dance as follows and called it Monday night, with acoustic music and no sound support, while the sound tech was fighting off gremlins.   There were no new dancers at that time, a single line of 4 groups of hands-four.  I called it with the Balance and Swing.  It seemed to go over well.  I was expecting new dancers, and thought this dance would keep everyone connected to their foursome for the maximum amount of time. A1    F & B CircleL .75 to face P on sideA2    DSD P, Sw P (OrB & S P)B1    F & B Circle RIGHT  .75 to face N on sideB2    DSD N, Sw N (OrB & S N) 07/19/16, Linda Leslie wrote: Leaving out the long lines, and moving things around a bit, your dance is very similar to the following, by Orace Johnson.Cheers, LindaMidwest FolkloreContra/BecketA1 ---Circle left three-quartersNeighbor do si doA2 ---Neighbor Balance and SwingB1 ---Circle left three-quartersPartner Do si doB2 ---Partner Balance and Swing     (look left and slide left to a new couple)On Jul 19, 2016, at 4:54 PM, via Callers wrote: Not sure if this has already been written, but it fits a particular spot in an upcoming program:A1 LL FB Circle L 1.25 to face P on sideA2 DSD P, Swing P (or Balance and Swing P)B1 LL FB Circle L .75 to face N on sideB2 DSD N, Swing N (or Balance and Swing N)  Thanks for any enlightenment!Ann in hot, humid, Annapolis, MD___Callers mailing listCallers@lists.sharedweight.nethttp://lists.sharedweight.net/listinfo.cgi/callers-sharedweight.net

Re: [Callers] Is this a new dance?

2016-07-20 Thread John Rogers via Callers
I call Dancing and the Road to Hell fairly often, and although I am careful
about it (as I will explain), the dancers seem to enjoy it. For starters, I
never call it as the last dance of the evening (when the band is likely to want
to play uptempo) and I mention to them that this is not a good time to bump the
tempo up, just in case they were thinking of doing so. The other important
thing is to tell the dancers not to worry about finishing the circle on time...
the ladies start the chain when the music says to, and the gents keep circling
until they get home, and by that time they'll have their partners for the
courtesy turn. I think it flows nicely as long as the caller sets the
expectation the the transition to the chain is rather fluid. (I think Mike
Richardson's description describes this approach.)

Hi Ann,

Circle left 1+1/4 in my experience will take at least 10-12 counts.
Perhaps consider:

A1: long lines forward, rollaway neighbor on the way back
  circle left 3/4

Hi Michael,

I like the simplicity/symmetry of this composition. I'll share a caution I
learned in trying similar dances: in practice, the dancers need extended
prompting or some other way to know which "repeat" is different.

In your dance, the directional difference in the B2 G otherwise follows
an identical pattern as in the A1. Dancers may have great difficulty
remembering which direction the G is to go. Fortunately, in this dance
one could give the walk though hint "all swings happen on the Gents' home
side". Maybe that will be enough for a critical mass to help guide others
without requiring extended calling.

Best,
Don

Bree-- I don't see the progression either. Perhaps slide left to circle
left?

2013-01-27 Thread Bree Kalb

Tom,

Let us know when you name this dance. I like it and have already written in
on a card; need only a title before I file it.

Jane,

I may be having a brain blip, but I don't see the progression in Mad
Masquerade and I can't find the dance with a web search.

I just wrote a dance and wanted to know if it's unique. I'm pretty
sure the A1 is borrowed from another dance.

D-imp
A1 Circle left. Mad Robin (face partner and do-si-do neighbor).

A2 Hey, women pass left shoulders

B1 Women pass left shoulders and swing partner

B2 Ladies chain, forward and back.

Tom

Tom - Manhattan Chowder and Mad Masquerade both start similar - the latter
being most similar.

It is in Becket as follows:
A1 Cir lf 3, Mad Robin
A2 1/2 Hey, N gyp Rt 1x
B1 L Gyp Lf 1 1/2x . Half Hey (pass P Rt to start)
B2 P B
