Thanks big time on this.

Right,

You can play with the shape on the end of the wire, but my solution was
just a nice clean flat end, which I accomplished with an oil stone in a
couple minutes. The guage and tension of the wire are other variables,
as well as the pitch of the gear, but it didn't take much to get it to
work. Hobby shops that deal in RC planes usually have a good selection
of piano wire. If you get stuck for gears let me know, I have a surplus
store that has tons of them. Good luck.

Re: [Cameramakers] 120 Takeup winders wanted

2001-10-31 Thread Robert Mueller

The idea with a gear is the same except for using an "unofficial
ratchet". The end effect is similar except real ratchets are liable to be
made from hardened steel. If your loading is light the gear should last long.

Don't worry about the seemingly small sizes, especially if you can do it on
a milling machine. The parts are not all that small! Even with hand work
for the little ramps I expect no great trouble. Certainly the round work
ought to be done in a lathe.

One more thing on ratchets; they are common in clocks. I suspect can pick
up the official kind from a source of repair parts. The trouble is that I
have been out of this community too long. You can look for LaRose or Selva
on the Internet. Selva is a German company and sells new stuff for DIY
while LaRose was in the USA (East Coast, perhaps South Carolina) dealing in
watch and clock parts. My last contact with them was 25 years ago.

Good luck!

I got online last night trying to find ratchet gears, but couldn't. I tried
Berg and Global Devices, and someone else, but no luck.

Seems like they should be sort of common.

Dwight,

Theres probably a lot of ways to do it, but one that I have used before
involved soldering a gear to the shaft, and having a piece of musice
wire pinned down so the end of it was bearing against the side of the
gear. The gear then could only be turned one way. This is hard to
describe in words, if you're interested, I'll make a sketch for you.

Several is a different story! Why not make one. A simple design I have
seen depends on some bearing balls which run on little ramps. There is a
drum and a disk inside it. The ramps are cut into the edge of the
disk. For one direction of turning the balls roll up the ramps until they
jam against the inside of the drum which is then turned. For rotation in
the other direction the balls run down the ramp and bump a steep slope
(vertical wall!) and so no climbing or jamming occurs. These would be
quite easy to make in the quantity you want. A ratchet would be a good
alternative and I believe you can buy the wheels if you do not want to
bother cutting them.

I think I have such a thing from an old aerial camera. If no alternative
offer appears I am willing to make a slight effort to find it for you. The
trouble is that shipping from here is not cheap and any alternative nearer
you is a better choice.

I have seen such parts in copy machines so if you see one of those
available to scrap, check its contents.

Does anyone know where I can get, or how I can make easily, the takeup
winder mechanism, i.e. the knob that only turns one way?

This will be for a 120 film camera.

I'm still downloading that archives, after a couple of hours. Drats.
