[cayugabirds-l] CC lot Bay breasted warbler
I had a very cooperative bay breasted warbler in some low trees by CC lot, across from Clara Dickson Hall at 9:30 this morning. It was low enough that I could get good views without my binoculars. [cayugabirds-l] id help
About 1/2 an hour ago I saw a warbler-sized bird foraging on the ground under the trees in front of the parking spaces facing the pond at Cornell Plantations. It was a pretty uniform brown on top and streaked brown below with a yellow throat and yellow underside near the tail. The top of the head was more of a reddish brown. It had a thin bill and wagged it's tail up and down as it foraged. Unfortunately, I didn't have a camera with me. Ideas? [cayugabirds-l] Bluebirds nesting
It's official: the first time ever that I have Bluebirds nesting in my yard! Out on the closeline pole where John Blizzard put a couple of Doug Carlter's bluebird boxes. House Wrens usually stake a claim on the one on the tree just outside the dining rm window, sometimes another pair on the clothesline pole box, but there was a male Bluebird claiming it this time, and the female nearby in the redbuds. A Tree Swallow may be in the second one on the pole, but with my mowing today I think they've all had enough tension so will check it out more closely another day. ---Kathy Strickland _ The New Busy is not the too busy. Re: [cayugabirds-l] id help and Spanish bird names
Thanks, several others suggested Palm Warbler ... after looking at some more photos, I'm convinced that's what it was. Thanks everyone ... for the ID help and the suggestions about Spanish names. For others interested in an on-line resource for the Spanish names, Alberto Lopez mentioned the following site: http://www.seo.org/centro_doc.cfm?idCategoria=334 Happy birding, Ray On May 13, 2010, at 3:09 PM, Matthew Medler wrote: Hi Ray, Your mystery bird sounds like a western Palm Warbler. Your plumage description is good, and Palm Warblers are well-known for their tail wagging. Regarding your question about Spanish bird names, Kenn Kaufman put out a Spanish-language version to his North American field guide a few years ago. I don't know if it is readily available or not, but I'm sure you could find out easily on Amazon.com or some other bookselling site. [cayugabirds-l] Catbird!
Last few days I have been anxiously waiting for the Catbird to come home. One day I heard some soft catbirds sounds but it turned out he was not from my area. Today as I walked into my backyard, I was thrilled to hear him, he is back! He is hiding in the rose bushes and singing with gusto. I will have to start competing with him for moths early mornings. I have to scare them off before he wakes up to have a hearty breakfast. I was seeing catbirds all around and mine had not returned, so i was wondering if he lost his way in the hurricanes and tornados. What a reliefe! I look forward to his songs, hopefully he has added a few more phrases to his vocabulary! [cayugabirds-l] OOB/Chimney Swifts
While this is out of the basin I think it may be of interest to some who might want to add them to their list. We arrived in Skaneateles Tues. evening about 6:30 to join friends at the Blue Water Grill for a delicious meal. For 1/2 hr. before we went inside I had been watching many Chimney Swifts flying over the business district buildings. After we went inside my window view allowed me to continue to watch them, a sight I've always loved. Many yrs. have passed since I've seen so many swifts. In my early teens, even before, on the family farm near Wellsboro, PA I often climbed the tall, wall ladder to get to the peak of the hay mow where the swifts had their beautifully made, shiny, varnished-looking, stick spit nests stuck to the side of the barn. Many times I would hold pet the birds, marveling at their pointed tails their soft feathers. None ever seemed alarmed that I was there. A treasured memory! Here in Union Springs I saw only 2 swifts last night. Last yr. I discovered that swifts are nesting in an unused chimney of people we know. Previously, I had been unable to discover where they were going to roost. I might also add, that we had dozens of bats around the barns at night. They slept in the barn near the swifts in the daytime oh, horror of horrors, I often petted them stretched out their velvety wings!! How much the simple, wonderful things of life have changed! The innocence of youth . ! Thanks for the memories!
