[cayugabirds-l] Stewart Park White-winged Scoters

2010-11-15 Thread Tim Lenz
Hello,

This morning I had my first WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS of the fall at Stewart
Park. It's interesting to compare frequency of scoter reports in eBird for
the Cayuga Basin:

The eBird data (under the frequency tab) show that Surf Scoter is most often
seen early in the fall (Sep-Oct); Black Scoter is the most frequently
reported in mid-fall (Nov), and White-winged Scoter appears in late fall and
remains the most frequently observed scoter until early spring.

Location: Stewart Park
Observation date: 11/15/10
Notes: Cloudy, light north wind
Number of species: 26

American Black Duck - Anas rubripes 7
Mallard - Anas platyrhynchos 250
Redhead - Aythya americana 3
White-winged Scoter - Melanitta fusca 3 *FOS; males; far out beyond
wooden pilings
Bufflehead - Bucephala albeola 32
Ruddy Duck - Oxyura jamaicensis 3
Common Loon - Gavia immer 1
Double-crested Cormorant - Phalacrocorax auritus 8
Bald Eagle - Haliaeetus leucocephalus 1
Red-tailed Hawk - Buteo jamaicensis 1
American Coot - Fulica americana 40
Winter Wren (Eastern) - Troglodytes troglodytes hiemalis/pusillus 1

[cayugabirds-l] late Chipping Sparrow

2010-11-15 Thread Sara Jane Hymes
I read with interest Meena's post about a late Chipping Sparrow, when I
just sat down for lunch and spotted on our feeder another 'late'
CHIPPING SPARROW. Perhaps those young ones are late leaving!

[cayugabirds-l] Feeder birds- Richford

2010-11-15 Thread David McCartt
Hi All,

This past weekend marked the beginning of my 10th year of participation in
Project Feeder Watch http://www.birds.cornell.edu/pfw/index.html so I thought
I'd share my list.

COOPER'S HAWK  1
Mourning Dove  1
Red-bellied Woodpecker  1 (new regular visitor since this past winter)
Downy Woodpecker  2
Hairy Woodpecker  3
Blue Jay  6
American Crow  2
Black-capped Chickadee  14
Tufted Titmouse  2
Red-breasted Nuthatch  2
White-breasted Nuthatch  2
European Starling  7
Dark-eyed Junco  5
Northern Cardinal  2
House Finch  8
American Goldfinch  7
EVENING GROSBEAK  5  (2 females, 3 males)

Unfortunately, it seems the Pine Siskins we had for at least 5 consecutive days
moved out last Wednesday.  Evening Grosbeaks appeared again for a few hours
yesterday and we had two females this morning.  Still haven't seen any American
Tree Sparrows.

In case you're wondering, we have 3 tube feeders, 1 hopper feeder, and 2 niger
seed socks setup.

Good birding,
David McCartt
