[cayugabirds-l] Grey-headed Gull
I met with my "financial adviser" at TTC (not that I have any money) today, and he actually brought up the subject. WOW. He must read the NY Times. I am still broke, but he knows about the bird and asked me many questions. Cool. Maybe we have a convert. [cayugabirds-l] Ithaca Great Egret
On this evening's (1 Aug) canoe-paddle on Cayuga Inlet Laurie and I saw a Great Egret atop a small tree on the edge of Jetty Woods. A Great Blue Heron stood on a log below, and 17 Double-crested Cormorants rested on dead trees or soared nearby. A Belted Kingfisher and a couple of Caspian Tern families flew past. When we got home an Eastern Screech-Owl was calling from the edge of our yard. --Dave Nutter Ithaca, NY -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

RE:[cayugabirds-l] Cardinal Singing - update on posting from last week - etc
I have one more possible theory regarding singing. How about day length matching to day of the spring days? May be not it is still little too long. Meena Meena Haribal Boyce Thompson Institute Ithaca NY 14850 Phone 607-254-1258 http://meenaharibal.blogspot.com/ http://haribal.org/ http://haribal.wikispaces.com/space/showimage/wildwest+trip+August+2007+.pdf -Original Message- From: Marie P Read Sent: Monday, August 01, 2011 2:01 PM To: Marie P Read; Meena Haribal; CAYUGABIRDS-L Subject: RE: Cardinal Singing - update on posting from last week - etc Hi all, Last week several of us (including me) reported cardinals singing non-stop and there was a thread about at what stage in the nesting cycle the cardinals might be to have stimulated this resurgence in song. Well, as we speak a pair of cardinals is at my feeder with the male feeding the female. Haven't seen any fledglings. So my local pair has most likely just started another clutch, hence the singing last week. Lots of young Rose-breasted Grosbeaks around, and a couple of days ago a Northern Flicker female on the lawn feeding her fledgling. On another note, there were a number of Bobolinks flying around giving their bink calls in the as-yet-unharvested grain fields at the eastern end of Mt Pleasant Rd this morning. Some were mixed in with a larger flock of Red-winged Blackbirds, others were in smaller single species flocks. Also a Common Raven calling from the radio tower. [cayugabirds-l] Upland Sandpiper: Etna, NY
Just a quick note: Saturday night, around 11:00pm, while doing some brief star-gazing from the back yard, I was pleasantly surprised to hear the four-noted night flight call of an Upland Sandpiper, as it passed overhead on its southward migration. The distinct call heard was the bubbly "Bweep-bweep-bweep-bweep!" call, infrequently heard during night migration through this part of Upstate, NY. Good birding! Rare at this date. By far my earliest Swainson's Thrush in the fall. The bird was near the creek on the edge of the spruces. It called at least twelve times, a liquid pwip. Never gave any other vocalizations. First called in response to my whistling an Eastern Screech-Owl. Called several other times and remained hidden in the foliage. Finally had a poor view of it, showing brown-gray uppeparts, buffy breast and buff spectacles. Was not completely tattered or showing obvious signs of molt, but views were such that I would not have been able to detect. Greater coverts did not show pale tips, but again, views were not good and scapulars covered part of wing coverts.
