[cayugabirds-l] Dryden Lake and George Road
I checked Dryden Lake and George Road this morning. Dryden Lake was all but empty, with a couple of Mallards, Ring-billed Gulls, and two Pied-billed Grebes the only birds on the lake. I had a Winter Wren and a lot of Yellow-rumped Warblers and Swamp Sparrows along the trail, but little else of note. George Road was a little more active, with 4 BLUE-WINGED TEAL, 35+ GREEN-WINGED TEAL (in a tight group sleeping on the shore on the George Road side), 6 NORTHERN PINTAIL, 2 RUDDY DUCKS, and *5* AMERICAN COOTS, easily the most coots I have ever seen in Dryden, where even a single bird is not always an annual event. I wasn't able to find any shorebirds, although the habitat still looks decent. -- Jay McGowan Macaulay Library Cornell Lab of Ornithology jw...@cornell.edu -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] eagle w/ fish on East Shore Drive
11:15 AM this morning. Nearing construction area by Cornell Community Sainling Center, we observed a mature bald eagle w/ an 18-20 fish in its talons fly low over the road and land in a tree nearby. Beautiful sight! Tom Vawter A. [cayugabirds-l] FRANKLIN'S GULL - Derby Hill
Flew by at 1:05 with a small number of Ring-bills, going west. First winter bird. One could try checking Oswego Harbor or Fair Haven if the bird hasn't left the area. [cayugabirds-l] Mundy at lunch time
I did a walk around Mundy today. Highlights were 5 or 6 Golden Crowned Kinglets. They are absolutely adorable. They were moving from one hemlock to another and had to pass me on the way, they cared least about me. One of them simply passed me from a couple of inches away. There was also a very plump Blue -headed Vireo along with them. I feel I have seen very few of these birds this year. Near Kentucky spot, I ran into a juvenile Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. He/she was working on a maple samaras. He was picking up individual pairs of samara and throwing them in the air with force. I am not sure if during that time he ate the seeds by squeezing them out. He did that till all the fruits on that tip were gone. Then he moved to next. It was fun to watch him. There was a migrating Monarch, if he makes it to Virginia in next two days he should be ok. If he is flying say 30 MPH he should have to fly five hours today and five hours tomorrow. I admired his goal. There was also a Clouded yellow Sulphur nectaring on one of the late Asters (or whatever they are called now). I also flushed a very cold female Autumn Meadowhawk dragonfly, which just moved a foot and landed on a sunny shrub. It was very pleasant afternoon out there.
