Re: [cayugabirds-l] Anyone? Friday Braddock Bay
Hi Lee Ann and everyone, Just a heads up, Friday looks excellent for hawkwatching up here at Braddock Bay (sw winds 10-15, hopefully they're more on the 15 end). Of course it is also Bird of Prey Days this weekend (though weather looks bad-NW winds and rain) and there will be many programs going on. If anyone is planning on coming up, Friday looks to be the best day (though if winds are right and the rain holds off Saturday doesn't look too bad either). We had an astounding 37000+ bird flight (34000+ Broad-wings) on Monday, so birds are really moving through. With the right conditions (and as I said, it looks favorable), we could have a decent flight Friday (probably not 37000 but a good flight nonetheless!!). To check out programs and info about the hawkwatch, see www.bbrr.org and to see hawk count data from this year so far visit www.hawkcount.org/month_summary.php?rsite=353PHPSESSID=c48b449861d24908bb07585f343d25a4 Hope to see many of you up here at Braddock Bay sometime soon! [cayugabirds-l] nesting Hoodie
Hi all, Each spring, we have Hooded Mergansers visiting our smallish pond (~150' by 50'), feeding on the newts and tadpoles. We usually see a pair for a month or so, then the female only for a while longer. About 40 yards from the pond, over our driveway, is an owl/wood duck sized nest box which has only hosted squirrels in the 4-5 years it's been there. This morning, however, we discovered that the female Hooded Merganser is nesting in there!! She's been feeding on the pond and flying off in that direction for a few weeks, but today was the first day I was able to catch her entering the box! Very exciting! I know the chicks will drop down from the box when they fledge, and it seems an awfully long way, with a hard landing at the bottom, and it also seems pretty far from the pond but I hope they make it! [cayugabirds-l] forest zoo feeding time
Susie I were walking thru Hammond Hill SF early this morning. It was very quiet- distant WINTER WREN, HERMIT THRUSH, etc. With no warning, a very loud cacophony of sounds poured forth from a mass of spruces just off the trail. We both stopped and said What the h***! I was listening hard for clues to the sounds, but few were forthcoming. After what seemed like 5 minutes, the din started to diminish and we could make out various irate raven calls. Then 2 adults flew away, but calls continued from a single point, so we assume a nest of young is there. Then I remembered that several years ago I had found a GREAT BLUE HERON NEST at this location. Then we saw at least 4 of them flying out and circling. What we suppose is that the ravens took one of several heron nests earlier this spring, the herons taking the others when they arrived later. We have no idea what caused the commotion; maybe one of the herons infringed on raven space, or vice versa. It rather took our breath away. S. S. Didn't see any Egrets on Tsache 9:20 -9:40 this AM. Quick check at Mays Point Pool, in bad light looking into the sun, but no suspects there either. [cayugabirds-l] Osprey and Raven
Yesterday on the west side of Hog Hole I photographed an OSPREY sitting atop a snag, eating a fish. It called back and forth to another, just out of sight, who soon flew in and perched on a branch nearby with its own fish. The day before, Tuesday, I kayaked on Dryden Lake and watched as two OSPREY circled around quite close, diving periodically for fish. I also found a lone HORNED GREBE, saw a small group of PIED-BILLED GREBE, and in the distance could make out the silhouettes of a pair of loons, though they were far off, the water was very choppy due to high winds, and the sun was in my eyes, so it was hard to identify them. Returning home from kayaking, along Irish Settlement Rd where it meets Hammond Hill Rd, I spotted a RAVEN sitting in the field on the west side of the road, being dive bombed by two CROWS. The RAVEN flew a short distance and landed again, and was attacked in short order. It finally flew off up Hammond Hill. There was a raccoon carcass nearby on the road, which may have been the point of contention. I have photos of 3 of the 4 Osprey in my CBC photo album, as well as one of the Horned Grebe, and some dramatic but not very sharp images of the raven vs crow fight.
