RE: [cayugabirds-l] Birding Montezuma today
Ann and cayugabirders - The first drive as you go on to Towpath Road is closed unless you have a permit which Linda Ziemba is very glad to give you if you are willing to volunteer to survey birds for her!. Otherwise, it's a no-no. [cayugabirds-l] Yellow-headed Blackbird
Yellow-headed Blackbird still at Ann McGinnus site (Endicott) as of 6:25am today. I do have some very lousy photos (not very light out, misty rain, no tripod) but the bird can be I.D.'d. It is a school day, so I am unsure where people would/should park. The road is really the driveway up to the school where all the buses go, with limited parking. [cayugabirds-l] Yellow-Headed Blackbird Endicott, NY Photos
Melissa Penta and I got great views mainly with the scope of the YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD almost immediately when we arrived at West Corners Marsh around 7 am. I briefly heard the buzz saw sounding call while she was the first to sight it. The white on the wings in flight is very distinctive! What a great bird for Broome County and many thanks to Sara Kinch for posting this last night!!! Bob Grosek stopped by while we were there and he could not recall if we have ever had one in Broome County before. Anyone know? Anyway I got some fair digi-scoped images which are distant. I put theexact location of where we had the bird on the mapping feature of flickr for those interested in finding the bird. The bird is best seen if you pull onto the road that the school is on. This road is above the marsh and gives you the best views. see http://www.flickr.com/photos/davenicosia/sets/72157629546647154/ Dave Nicosia Johnson City, NY -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

And I suppose they went right out and shot the Swan after the tragic incident. That's usually what happens where humans are harmed, when animals act in their natural ways of defending themselves. [cayugabirds-l] Lake Ontario Savannah area
Went up to Braddock Bay, weather not cooperating, Owl Prowl Woods only offered a quick glimpse of a Great Horned Owl (and a few BC Chickadees BG Gnatcatchers). Stopped in the warbler banding station to see mostly RC Kinglets and 1 N. Waterthrush 1 Brown Creeper getting banded. No raptors visible (very low cloud cover high winds out of the north). Went on to Sodus Point to see lots of breeding plumage Long-tails, lots of Caspian Terns, tons of DC Cormorants, beyond the pier, to the east. (FYI lots = about 50 - 75, tons = 100-200) Drove on down to Van Dyne Spoor Rd in Savannah to see a pair of green-tagged Trumpeter Swans (pool across Savannah Springs Lake Rd near north end of Van Dyne Spoor Rd), too far to get tag numbers. Marsh area on south end of VDS Rd had several coots and several common gallinules (one with a frog). The wooded area along VDS Rd had a pair of N Flickers, YB Sapsucker, Pileated, several Rusty Blackbirds. Towpath Rd (Montezuma) offered tree swallows, barn swallows, a pair of N rough-winged swallows all skimming over the water. Lots of ducks; wood, mallard, gw teal, bw teal, N pintail, shovelers. One adult bald eagle RT hawk. Tschache Pool (Montezuma) had Am. wigeon, N Shovelers, Canada Geese (with 2 goslings visible), and lots of coots. -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
