[cayugabirds-l] Beauty and the Beak on Video

2012-09-07 Thread Carl Steckler

I don't normally forward this kind of thing, but this is so wonderful I
had to share. If you have not seen this please get through the first
part which is hard to take. This is just such a great story with a happy
ending.

It has only been a few years and now we seem to be taking Peregrines for
granted. Not criticizing, but you know what I mean. Any day with a

[cayugabirds-l] MNWR Thursday

2012-09-07 Thread tigger64
I didn't come up with much on the Wildlife Drive other than Merlin and
Peregrine. There were a decent number of Semi-p Sandpiper at Benning, renewing
hope for a Western. At dusk, Knox-Marsellus had 82 Great Egrets, one with an
orange wing tag, and 325 Great Blue Herons amidst the other birds people have
been reporting.

I'm also including an eBird checklist from August 27th for K-M which featured a
flyby Whimbrel (it was circling in the K-M airspace for a few minutes but never
seen on the ground). Apologies for forgetting to post.

[cayugabirds-l] Hummingbird male

2012-09-07 Thread Marie P Read
Hi all,

Suddenly, yesterday and today, there has been a male Ruby-throated Hummingbird
at my feeder (there have been several females/immatures consistently). Yet it
has been nearly 2 weeks since I saw "my" male who was here all summer. Whether
the current one is actually "mine" (if so, where has he been?...not nearby
since all the hummingbird flowers in my yard have faded) or a new guy who has
just arrived from farther north, will remain unsolved—although his gorget is
much subdued, but maybe that is to be expected at this time of the summer.

[cayugabirds-l] Yellow-bellied Flycatcher & N. Waterthrush at MWR

2012-09-07 Thread Mark Miller
A short walk around South Spring Pool at Montezuma (off the route 89 parking
area) around 1 PM Friday produced very few birds but did see a Northern
Waterthrush and a Yellow-bellied Flycatcher on the north side of the path,
about 100 yards or so past the overlook platform. Also had a bunch of Downy
Woodpeckers, Green Heron, & a Greater Yellowlegs.

On the auto route, LaRue's Lagoon had a Am. Golden Plover, Pectoral Sandpipers,
Caspian Terns, Yellowlegs, RB Gulls, & assorted ducks. A Peregrine Falcon
seemed to be following me, posed for close photos at the "carp" spillway, then
followed me around the bend to perch just before Benning Marsh for even closer
pics.

Good Luck to the Muck Racers!

The males arrive early and establish their territory, then they are very
busy all summer preforming their" manly "duties to all the females in their
area. Then no need to hang around.!!

I am wondering why the males leave earlier than the females in the fall? I
know that they return in May earlier to establish territory for mating, but
why do they leave earlier in the fall?
