[cayugabirds-l] Myer's Point, skywatching
Lots of birds migrating today! I spent a couple of hours (7-9ish) at Myer's Point this morning -- Jay McGowan was there before I got there and after I left, so he will have more complete list. Birds were moving virtually everywhere we looked -- not huge numbers but good diversity and fairly constant. Many birds were in small groups moving very high in the clouds, and we are sure we missed many birds! Couple of hundred COMMON LOONS with at least 2-3 RED-THROATED LOONS mixed in, sev hundred DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS, all three SCOTERS (mostly flying north low over the lake), 1 LONG-TAILED DUCK, good variety of other waterfowl in small groups, including AM BLACK DUCKS, N PINTAIL, AM WIGEON, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, all three MERGANSERS, BUFFLEHEAD, SCAUP, etc. plus many small flocks of CANADA GEESE, with at least 2 very small CACKLING GEESE in one flock, and 3 BRANT. also some raptors moving -- BALD EAGLES, COOPER's HAWK, plus at least one large flock of (probably Red-winged) BLACKBIRDS. Back at home in Northeast Ithaca in the last hour, I saw 2 COMMON LOONS, 3 CORMORANTS, 1 COMMON MERGANSER, 2 NORTHERN HARRIERS, an adult RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, plus more flocks of blackbirds, migrating BLUEBIRDS, etc. I'm very curious what others are seeing on the Lake, Mt. Pleasant, etc. KEN Ken Rosenberg Conservation Science Program Cornell Lab of Ornithology 607-254-2412 607-342-4594 (cell) k...@cornell.edumailto:k...@cornell.edu -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[cayugabirds-l] Golden eagle---Brooktondale
I felt lazy today; it's also cold, so I went to the center of the large field across from my house to see what might go over. It's also south of Mt. Pleasant, so anything over there has got to come my way, just higher. I had put in enough time so that my thoughts were dwelling on a big, hot bowl of soup, when I noted a dark speck to the north. I watched this for some time, until it came close enough to become a RAVEN. Normally I don't bother looking to the south, why would I, but since I had spent a lot of viewing time on the raven, I glanced back and up and there, just passing directly overhead was another dark form. I needed only binocs to see this was an adult GOLDEN EAGLE. I did get it in the scope, but that's a hard angle. So I just watched it circling slowly until it vanished in the direction of Pennsylvania. I hung out for another half hour, seeing 1 RED-TAILED HAWK, and a few more CANADA GOOSE flocks, then headed for the soup. [cayugabirds-l] Cattle Egret at Treman Marina
Thanks to Jay for getting the word out. Alexa and I first saw it while headed to the car after a chilly walk around Hog Hole (not too much on the lake that we could see). The egret was sitting on the marina docks with a group of gulls, often looking cold but also flying in short circles around central portion of marina on two occasions. Hopefully the bird sticks around. checklist: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S15554034 Ben -- Benjamin Freeman Ph.D. candidate Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Cornell University Ithaca, NY, USA benjamingfreeman.com -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
RE: [cayugabirds-l] Golden eagle---Brooktondale
I returned to the field after lunch. I hadn't walked 30' in when the grass exploded with little birds. I recognized the call note of the AMER. PIPIT, and probably looked pretty klutzy as I tried to put the scope up, then down, meanwhile trying to extricate the binoculars from inside the heavy coat. They stayed in the field, however, where I flushed them twice more, mostly just to watch them flying. There were about 75. In the next 45 minutes, 7 RED-TAILED HAWKS went over. Finally, as I scanned northish, the view field was filled with black spots. A flock of around 300 AMER. CROWS passed silently to the south. Stragglers emerged from the same direction and followed the main mass for the next ten minutes. Migrants? That's my opinion. I haven't seen a crow flock of that magnitude out here in several years. [cayugabirds-l] Cattle Egret(a)?
Around 11:30 a.m.Dave and I saw the Cattle Egret Marty spotted yesterday near Romulus. It gave us great views next to the road with 20 plus cows. The cows seemed to harass it a bit. It then flew to the west side of the road over some trees. An hour plus later one was reported at Treman Marina. We stopped to see that egret. It is hard to say if it was the same bird we saw up north. [cayugabirds-l] Stewart Park
Hi all, Today afternoon, Ngampit and I went to Stewart park as Ngampit wanted to show me large fruits of Ginko biloba. So I took the opportunity to scope the lake. I did not find any exciting scoters or loons, but we watched about 200 BUFFLEHEADS in two or three different groups. They seemed to be so happy creatures that they kept bobbing up and down (partly because it was very windy) and being playful. They seem to be chickadees of the water world, bold and happy. I also saw a few Ruddy ducks in East Shore region. It was too windy so all the birds were pressed to the edge of the shore along with lots of Canada Geese. As we circled the small pond on the south-east side held a pair of an elegant Wood Ducks and three female Buffleheads! And the usual gulls and large number of cormorants. At home today I had eight Dark-eyed Juncos feeding on the grass seeds and other dropped seeds! [cayugabirds-l] It's official .... LARUE'S LAGOON!!!!
This afternoon John I attended activities in the MNWR Visitor's Center in which Larue St. Clair was honored for his 20 yrs. as a volunteer at Montezuma. As expected, a gift was presented to him. We all know about Larue listing his counts in what areas of the refuge birds were seen. (Jackie Bakker has been helping him as another set of eyes by doing the driving for him in the hidden areas of the refuge the last few years. He will be 88 on 4 Dec.!) These lists, for the first time, gave the refuge a written daily, weekly, yearly record of when birds first arrived, their apparent departure times, also alerted birders about birds which were rarities to our area. Eventually, the value of those records became known to other wildlife refuges. They are now following Larue's lead, doing counts keeping records of birds in their areas! After the words of praise acknowledgement of his many contributions, his gift was presented. As I saw the cover begin to come off, I gasped, clapped had to fight back my tears, never expecting to see what I had hoped for. It was an official sign soon to be erected: LARUE'S LAGOON. Let me offer my personal thanks to all you birders who didn't accept the Yellow-legs name which was originally intended for what we mule heads insisted on calling Larue's Lagoon. He knows he has been honored is respected. Too many wonderful people go to their graves, never having known that. Cheers and congratulations, Larue! Thank you to MNWR personnel for the gift.
