[cayugabirds-l] Sapsucker Woods, Sun 4/13
On Sunday morning, a GREEN HERON was surveying Sapsucker Woods from high perches in the Fuller Wetlands and on the heron-cam snag in the main pond. Becky Hansen and her group also saw this bird. This is surely the earliest date in April for a local Green Heron sighting for me. The other highlight of my circuit around the sanctuary was a WINTER WREN at the southern Wilson/Severinghaus intersection. The wren gave me several minutes of very fine views as it moved among decaying logs, stopping now and then to pump its body up and down in place. The bird did not sing, but gave a lot of helpful jif-jif vocalizations. Mark Chao --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast! [cayugabirds-l] osprey pair courting over Jessup Woods
Today about 11-1130, a pair of ospreys, one clasping a 6-8 inch fish with both feet, circled, giving high calls, and repeatedly alighted on the playing field lights just W of the Woods and N across Jessup Rd from the Purcell Center. They moved off toward the north, appearing to stay for a while almost to Pleasant Grove Place (from my vantage point in Alot). After a bit, the one with the fish flew S toward me (still closer to PL. [cayugabirds-l] Eastern Towhee
First of yard year EASTERN TOWHEE showed up today (W Meadow Dr Lansing) singing his head off but with an unusual (and at first baffling) added strong second syllable that challenged my memorized pattern to something at first unidentifiable: drink-a-you-TEEE or drink-you-your-TEEE; the trill was flatter, and less upscale than I remembered so I had to get a visual on him to verify it wasn’t some really aberrant song sparrow or other mystery. On top of that, last year’s 1st Towhee was Apr 23 and 2012’s was Apr 26 so he’s very early for this location. Another item of interest: he sang two upsweep notes while foraging (after he stopped singing). At first I was sure there were 2 birds one responding to the other from about 10’ away. But after I found him and watched him, I could see he was throwing his voice: the first note was a few semitones higher and really seemed to come from a distance away, then the second note was more rooted at his location (on the ground). Fascinating trick. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Salt Pt. Ospreys on nest
The adults at Salt Point, Ophelia and Orpheus, are the mated pair from last year, arriving at Salt Point on Saturday, April 5. 2014. This will be their approximate arrival date every spring for as long as they survive. They've been courting, nesting, and fighting off intruding ospreys, 1-4 at a time, since their return. But unlike last year when the pair first got together on April 22, 2013, and had to quickly build a new nest and procreate, the pair has a bit more leisure time this season to spend flying together or just perching side-by-side on a branch and getting used to each other after their long winter separation. Robyn, Paul, and Stevie were the three chicks from last year who won't return to this area, assuming they all survive, until April of 2016. Last year's chicks were named for the three people instrumental in putting up the SP platform--Lab of O's Robyn Bailey, NYSEG's Paul Paradine, and T of Lansing's Park Rec. Dir. Steve Colt. The three are responsible for another new platform this year on Myers Hill Rd, just inland from the Myers Park entrance. The platform is attracting the attention of at least four ospreys over the last four days. Today was the first day I saw a female in the nest, but others saw an adult in it Saturday. The Portland Point pair have been nesting since Thursday, April 3, as far as I can tell. That's the latest O buzz in Lansing. There's lots of ospreys around Ithaca right now as well! Re: [cayugabirds-l] First Broad-wings
Just one day after Ken's observation, my (presumed) local Broad-winged Hawk is back on territory. I've seen him several times today, flying low over his traditional nest area, not far above the treetops, calling out the familiar Pe-h? as if expecting an answer. I recently discovered what I believe to be last year's newly-constructed nest (a previous nest that had been in use for a number of years was damaged by a heavy spring snowfall a couple of years ago). I heard some nasal Crow calls this morning. Looking around, I found three Crows, a familiar group that Pat has been feeding for months. They were close together in a tree. One had a food item, and the other two were watching very closely. Not sure what the social relationships are among this threesome, but I believe one was trying a little begging. Lots of Fox Sparrows, Towhees and Purple Finches around today. Also had Golden-crowned Kinglet and Winter Wren, both singing. I might walk down to the brook to hear the chorus of Hermit Thrushes this evening. Yard Woodcock continues. -Geo Kloppel On Apr 12, 2014, at 3:34 PM, Kenneth V.
