[cayugabirds-l] Mt. Pleasant

2014-12-21 Thread Susan Fast
On a 2 hour walk along the E. end of Mt. Pleasant Rd (Town of Dryden) this
morning, I encountered approx. 100 SNOW BUNTINGS, 22 HORNED LARKS, 11 CEDAR
WAXWINGS, and 2 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS.  No longspurs seen, by me anyway.    Lots
of CROWS.

[cayugabirds-l] Apples for breakfast-Red-bellied Woodpecker

2014-12-21 Thread Anne Clark
This morning, before it was seen at the feeder, the male Red-bellied Woodpecker
that frequents our suet was eating a frozen brown apple still hanging on a
tree. It was drilling into it and extracting bites.

Fruit is frequently mentioned as part of their diet, but I hadn't before seen
one eating apples, especially not frozen brown ones. Carbs a little limited at
this time of year?!

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Impacts of approved casino at Tyre:OT?

2014-12-21 Thread Dave Nutter
I think the location will be convenient for travelers on the Thruway by being
immediately on the north side of the interchange of I-90 NYS-414, near Magee
at the west edge of the Town of Tyre. I would expect additional traffic on
NYS-414, NYS-318, to the east NYS-5/US-20, to the northeast maybe on NYS-31,
and to the south on NYS-96A, NYS-96, and NYS-89. My hope is that the other
roads around the Montezuma Wetlands Complex and the north Cayuga Lake Basin
will not see much impact because they do not efficiently serve Magee or any
large population center. Of course workers to build and run the complex have to
come from somewhere, so expect a general local increase. We might be okay for
traffic as long as there are no new roads or road straightenings or road
expansions. Maybe it'll be a flop, since casinos elsewhere are failing, and
after construction we'll see very little traffic. Maybe the light pollution
will be limited to the interchange area. About 2 miles west of the interchange
on the north side of the Thruway is a large pond/swamp full of dead trees with
a major heronry, and herons and egrets commuting between here and the Montezuma
Wetlands Complex may overfly the the casino site. Please chime in if you see
other problems or think I've got it wrong. I only saw one map of the proposal
awhile ago, and it was hard to track down.

[cayugabirds-l] Summerhill and Snowy Owl

2014-12-21 Thread bob mcguire
A 2 hour walk/drive around Summerhill this morning produced very little in the
way of birds - until the drive home.

Salt Road in the state forest was especially quiet. No chickadees or juncoes. A
couple of crows bluejays. One distant nuthatch. Best Bird: calling Pileated
Woodpecker.

The various feeders around Lake Como had chickadees/juncoes/tree sparrows and
little else.

Driving south on Salt Road, just before Teet's scrap yard (and house #955) I
spied a heavily-barred SNOWY OWL in the middle of a snowy field about 100 ft
from the road.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Impacts of approved casino at Tyre:OT?

2014-12-21 Thread Alicia Plotkin
The casino is likely to be the anchor for other major development in the
immediate area. One $100,000,000 project already has been presented to
the Planning Board, to be located a little further west on Rte 318, and
proposing hundreds of thousands of sq feet of retail commercial
space on a 155 acre parcel. Last week NYS gave Seneca County a $750,000
grant to put in a sewer system along Rte 318, extending up to the
Premium Outlets site, removing one major hurdle to further development.

[cayugabirds-l] NE Ithaca screech-owl, Sun 12/21

2014-12-21 Thread Mark Chao
This afternoon, for the first time since last April, we saw an EASTERN
SCREECH-OWL in our box in northeast Ithaca. I feel nearly certain that I've
never seen this particular owl before. It has distinctive arcs on the
margin of each lower eyelid, toward the bill. They look like the black eyes
a person might get with a broken nose.

I've loaded two poor-quality but illustrative snapshots at the end of this
album.
