[cayugabirds-l] Owling trip tomorrow by CBC

2015-11-06 Thread Meena Madhav Haribal
Hi all,

This is Cayuga bird Club trip announcements. Members of the public are also
invited to attend this trip.

Details are as follow:

The Owling field trip on November 7 will be led by Wes Blauvelt and Meena
Haribal. Participants should meet at the Lab of Ornithology parking lot at
6:30 pm. Wes and Meena will then lead the group to various locations to look
for owls, including Great Horned, Barred, Eastern Screech and Saw-whet Owls.
Included in this trip will be a stop at John Confer's Hammond Hill Owl Site
(HHOWLS) to see how Northern Saw-whet Owls are banded. If we are lucky, we
might get one close enough to see in hand. Participants should bring a headlamp
or flashlight and dress warmly, with gloves and hats, for standing in the cold
listening for owls. This trip will be canceled if it is raining. We will return
to the Lab of O at approximately 10:30 pm.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Stewart Park student project: wetland restoration

2015-11-06 Thread Suan Hsi Yong
Ken Rosenberg and I were at Stewart Park last month when three of them
(don't remember names) came by, described the project briefly, and asked
for advice. They initially considered using the central part of the
lakeshore near the pavilion/floating dock, but we suggested instead the
corner of the lakeshore closest to the swan pen. We also suggested they get
in touch with the bird club to possibly arrange to present at the CBC
meeting. I don't know if they followed up (apparently not).

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant American Pipits etc

2015-11-06 Thread Carol Schmitt
Along with enjoying the Cinnamon Teal (which, by the way, seemed to have
distinct speckles on it's side, and chevron-feather markings fore and aft -
i.e. definitely a hybrid?), and a count of 68 Sandhills from East Rd., we
saw a lone Snow Bunting at Tschache, right in the grassy tracks before the gate.

My walk on blustery Mt Pleasant this morning turned up:

A flock of about 50
American Pipits
1 Horned Lark
None of Those White Birds from a few days
ago

On the way back, a Common Raven was on the road near a large flock of
American Crows checking out the newly harvested corn field. The raven took of
and was chased by a crow for a minute or so, giving me great comparison views of
the two species in flight.

Yesterday an hour before dusk I was able to clearly see the lovely hybrid
cinnamon teal and it's companions on my way to Fairport.
Thanks to Dave & Chris for descriptions of why it's a hybrid.

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Stewart Park student project: wetland restoration

2015-11-06 Thread Robyn Bailey
Dave,

Here is what the City of Ithaca forester said about the wetlands project:
“Basically the students will be planting some cattails and sweet flag along the
waters edge, maybe 50 linear feet.
Then they will do some water sampling through the summer. It's not a big
project.”

Sorry I don’t have more details about when and where exactly.

Students of New Roots charter school propose to do some sort of wetlands
restoration project somewhere in the western part of Stewart Park. This Monday
afternoon they will present their idea to the City of Ithaca Board of Public
Works meeting, which starts at 4:45pm on the 3rd floor of City Hall. See item
13B on the agenda below.

Does anyone know anything more about this project? (Where? How big? Doing what
for how long? Sponsored by whom with what funding?) Can anyone attend the
meeting? It would be difficult for me.

[cayugabirds-l] Hearing aids for birders?

2015-11-06 Thread Betsy Darlington
Hi, everyone-
Hope this isn't too off-topic!
I'm planning to get hearing aids and would like any advice you can give me.
There are too many higher register bird songs I can no longer hear, and I
have trouble hearing Lab of O speakers unless I'm right under their nose.
And I'm always asking my husband to speak up.
Do you know anything about mail-order kinds?
Any advice you might have for me would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Please respond to my email: darlingtonb...@gmail.com
so we don't clog up the list-serve.
