Hi Meena and John

Have to chime in here, as the lake and I are rather good friends, from a few 
thousand hours of rowing and sailing!  From Taughannock State Park it's 8 miles 
on the water to Stewart Park at the bottom end of the lake, and the west shore 
down there (Hog Hole) is only 1.8 miles east of a direct southerly line from 
the shore at Taughannock.  I don't know how you figured those large numbers of 
miles;  below Taughannock, around about Myers, the lake actually bends more 
southerly, not to the east. On the other hand, Watkins Glen at the south end of 
Seneca Lake is about 17 miles WSW from Taughannock, a direction that would be 
just right if the Loons were migrating to Pittsburgh.  

I do wonder where they go from here though.  The Susquehanna takes an extremely 
twisty course with a large easterly excursion in Pennsylvania, it would be 
interesting to know whether they follow it or just go straight, which would 
save hours of flight.

[cayugabirds-l] Binocluar eye piece cap found

Hi all,

Today morning Loon Watch trip somebody seem to have lost the eye piece cap for 
Nikon binoculars. If it is yours please send me an email at m...@cornell.edu.


We did have an incredible loon flight today morning of over 2000 loons. More 
details will come from the trip leader Wes or Diane.


On the way to loon count near Cayuga Nature Center, I saw Northern Flicker 
flying across the road.

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Snow Buntings

Around 3:30 pm today, 2 Snow Buntings and at least 3 Horned Larks on the 
easternmost hill, Mt Pleasant Rd. I would not have seen them had they not been 
flushed by a vehicle going by.

I had a super time at the loon watch this morning witnessing the large flights 
of loons and visiting with everyone there. Gary and I went around the lake 
afterwards, and saw many more loons on the lake. Looks like there will be some 
more spectacular flights!

[cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Bird Club Loon Watch

With temperatures hovering a few degrees above freezing and winds gusting from 
the NW at 20+ knots, conditions seemed perfect for a substantial loon flight 
this morning. The 20+ Cayuga Bird Club members and observers who arrived at 
Taughannock State Park around dawn were not disappointed. Dividing into two 
watch stations; the traditional location at the confluence of Taughannock Creek 
with Cayuga Lake and another approximately 100 yards south along the lake 
shoreline, observations were started 15 minutes before sunrise (6:31 AM). Over 
the course of the next two hours approximately 2,200 Common Loons were 
observed…….plus one Red-throated Loon. Using 15 minute intervals, two distinct 
flights were observed. Birds from Cayuga Lake were believed to comprised the 
first flight, with there numbers declining by 7:15 AM. A second flight, 
presumed from Lake Ontarion, began to arrive around 7:30 AM with numerous waves 
of 60 to 70 birds arriving from the NNE just below the cloud cover. This flight 
continued for approximately 45 minutes. A summary of the counts from the south 
watch station follows: 6:30 AM - 19; 6:45 AM - 75; 7:00 AM - 277; 7:15 AM - 57; 
7:30 AM - 151; 7:45 AM - 218; 8:00 AM - 102; 8:15AM - 10; 8:30 AM - 27;  and 
8:45 AM - 14. Count total = 958. The reported count for the traditional 
location was 1,200. One observer noted that there where too many birds to 
count! On that note, I would say it was a very successful Loon Watch. Thanks to 
all who participated (and to the loons) and let’s try to keep this great 
traditional alive in future years.

[cayugabirds-l] guns at Stewart Park - next steps?

As someone who frequents Fuertes Bird Sanctuary, I greatly appreciated
Dave's courage and posting and the resulting discussion this brought up.
Since tickets were not issued and the hunters were bitter, shouldn't we
follow up - especially because this has happened before (re: picture of
hunters with buoys facing the direction of rowers).  It's not harassment if
these guys were violating park rules, right?  Who would we (as individuals
or as a club?) ask to make/post signage?  DPW? and who would we ask to send
reminders of local law and to which hunter organizations?
