[cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Bird Club May meeting - NO speaker dinner!

2016-05-07 Thread cl...@juno.com
The May meeting of the Cayuga Bird Club will be on Monday, May 9 at 7:30 pm at
the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Cookies and conversation begins at 7:15 pm.
This month, Rick Manning will share thoughts and plans being discussed by the
city of Ithaca for making Stewart Park a bird- and birder-friendly destination.
In addition, Josephine Martell will talk about ideas being considered to manage
the Canada geese that frequent the park.
Rick Manning is the Executive Director & Founder of the Friends of Stewart
Park and the Coordinator & Founder of the Cayuga Waterfront Trail Initiative.
Rick is a Professional Landscape Architect in New York State and his practice
during the past fifteen years has focused on planning and design of park and
trail projects for a range of public clients throughout New York. In recent
years his work has increasingly focused on Ithacas waterfront -
completing the Cayuga Waterfront Trail and the revitalization of Stewart Park.
Josephine Martell serves as a Councilwoman in the City of Ithaca in the fifth
ward, which includes Fall Creek and Cornell Heights. She has worked in the
animal welfare and conservation fields for nearly fifteen years doing public
policy and communications work. She is currently the citys point person
for management of the Canada goose population at Stewart Park. Josephine holds
a MS in public policy from the Center for Animals and Public Policy at the
Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University and is pursuing
doctoral research at Cornell University examining how message framing and word
choice impact long term species conservation and management. There is no
speaker dinner this month.

[cayugabirds-l] Bird walk. SSW. Least flycatcher, Common Yellowthroat

2016-05-07 Thread Linda Orkin
I invite everyone to enjoy this very nice report from this morning's walk at
SSW. Ken is new to our leader group, but an obvious asset.

A reminder to all, bird walks at Sapsucker Woods happen every Saturday and
Sunday. Led by a wonderful group of bird club/CLO volunteers.

See below. And enjoy.

Linda Orkin
>
> This morning was overcast and cool as I lead a group of about 10 people into

[cayugabirds-l] Great Horned Owls @ Jetty Woods

2016-05-07 Thread Suan Hsi Yong
This morning our SFO group went to Jetty Woods to admire the Great Horned
Owl and two fledglings reported earlier by Dave Nutter. From the pump
station, go past the big puddle about 20 yards, look to the right for a
large fallen log right next to the trail. That log log points approximately
in the direction of the tree where the fledglings were sitting this
morning, high up in a distant tree.

Earlier we went to Hawthorn Orchards, which was muddy and pretty quiet,
though we did see two silent pine warblers, a probably least empid, and a
wood thrush singing high in a lone tree out in the relative open away from
the woods.

[cayugabirds-l] (Released?) quail in yard.

2016-05-07 Thread John Confer
In the last 10 days Karen and I heard a quail once and several days later saw
it once at our feeder. Given the many hours we watch, it does not make many
visits to our feeder or we would have seen it more often. We live on the south
end of Hammond Hill. I wonder if anyone knows who may have reared and released
the bird near us? I think Steve Kress did this some time ago, but his house is
nearly 4 miles from our house. Just curious.

John Confer

PS Since I'm virtually certain this is a released bird, I didn't add it to our
yard list.

Starting at around 8:30 this morning, I drove the road to the

It was pretty quiet except from numerous singing BLACK-THROATED

BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER and a MAGNOLIA WARBLER along the edge of the
road singing and foraging at eye level, and along the road at the
bottom, I found a singing CANADA WARBLER that came close to the
  road for nice looks.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Incubating Merlin - S Titus Ave

2016-05-07 Thread Tobias Dean
Perhaps the same Merlin I witnessed nailing a redwing or starling on
Spencer Rd. near the roundabout. He attacked across the northbound lane,
luckily there was no southbound traffic and I was able to stop to hold off
the truck behind me and the catch was flown off back across the lane into
the trees on the uphill side.

[cayugabirds-l] Goetchuis Preserve

2016-05-07 Thread Marie P. Read
New birds at the Goetchius Preserve this morning were:

Eastern Kingbird
Bobolink...three males together in a jangling group

Also,
Solitary Sandpiper
Barn and Tree Swallows
Wilson's Snipe
Northern Flicker
Field Sparrow
etc, etc

The lack of Eastern Meadowlark at the preserve so far is a bit
disappointing...most years there has been a pair nesting there, starting
usually before the Bobolinks show up. Unless anyone else has seen them there
already? John Confer?

A pair of Merlins are incubating in White Pine on South Titus AVe. The nest and
the favorite plucking tree = sentinel tree are easily seen from public land,
particularily the dike along Six-mile Creek (beware of dog poop). The nest is
in the western-most block of S. Titus Ave., behind Meadow Court on south side

The nest was built this year by a quartet of Fish Crow.

A male Mourning Warbler was singing along the Village of Lansing Greenway

Perhaps even more interesting was that it was the only warbler I turned up
