[cayugabirds-l] followup to Stewart Park birds: Cuckoo still present by dock at 0920 h

2016-10-18 Thread Stuart Krasnoff
Just after running into Mark Chao on his way out of Stewart Park I tried
unsuccessfully to find the warbler flock by the aluminum dock mid park. I did,
however, see a cuckoo, presumably the YBCU from yesterday, moving around in the
3rd willow east of the dock around 0920 AM.

[cayugabirds-l] Mockingbird

2016-10-18 Thread Laura Stenzler
Hi all,
There has been a mockingbird singing away at the East Hill Plaza on Ellis
Hollow Rd, Ithaca for the past week. He is there today in full song. He likes
to sing from the evergreens to the west of Burger King. He must think it's
spring!

[cayugabirds-l] Stewart Park, Tues 10/18

2016-10-18 Thread Mark Chao
I looked rather carefully for birds around the pavilion dock area at
Stewart Park on Tuesday morning. I didn’t find yesterday’s cuckoo, but I
did see at least one, probably two CAPE MAY WARBLERS and a TENNESSEE
WARBLER with many Yellow-rumped Warblers, a few Ruby-crowned Kinglets, and
a PURPLE FINCH in the tallest willow next to the dock.

I found another Tennessee Warbler by the swan pen, and I think that there
were probably a few other calling non-Yellow-rumped warblers, which I
couldn’t confirm by sight. I didn’t find any unusual birds on the lake.

[cayugabirds-l] SSW this morning

2016-10-18 Thread Marc Devokaitis
Fall Chorus on a short visit to the lookout south of the Sherwood Platform
around 8:30 this morning. Estimated 20 White-throated Sparrows "cheeping"
and uttering weak, rambling song fragments. Another dozen or so
juncos"chipping", and around 30 Cedar Waxwings wheezing. All were dining on
the abundant fruits in the wetland vegetation. Goldfinches and Red-winged
Blackbirds gathering as well and one surprise (late) Red-eyed Vireo.
