[cayugabirds-l] How to join the list

2018-05-03 Thread Jill Vaughan

I have forgotten how I joined and want to advise someone who wants to be part
of the List. Her husband saw an Indigo Bunting today in Lansing along Salmon
Creek, and I think that is worth sharing.
Please reply to me and I will forward to her.

Thank you. Best free bird news releases on the planet!

[cayugabirds-l] Willet

2018-05-03 Thread Johnson, Alyssa
I am almost positive that I just flushed a flock of 16 Willet off the stone
beach, just north of the Ramada and the iron foot bridge, on Seneca Lake in
Geneva.

White and black bars on the wings, a white rump patch and they were vocalizing
a nasally high pitch sound as they flew over and circled.

No photos of course. I was walking dogs!

Is this crazy? I can't make them into anything else.

Best,

How Australia's Birds Populated the World
Monday, May 7th, 2018 7:30pm
Cornell Lab of Ornithology Auditorium
Speaker: Tim Low

Many scientists believe that the world’s songbirds came out of Australia.
Author Tim Low will provide a synthesis of the scientific literature with
colorful examples of ecological and behavioral pressures that shaped song
in Australia’s birds. He’ll help you make the connection between loud and
harsh vocalizations and the abundance of nectar. Understanding the forces
in Australia that shaped song will open up a new perspective on bird
vocalizations worldwide. Tim's book, Where Song Began, will be in the
bookstore, and Tim will be available for signing.

What a gorgeous morning!

On my way to work this morning, I saw my FOY Baltimore oriole fly across the

Happy birding.

[cayugabirds-l] Poor wood thrush

2018-05-03 Thread Donna Lee Scott
Sarah Blodgett (neighbor) & I are mourning the probable car death of a
beautiful Wood Thrush she found on Bill George Rd. yesterday.
I have yet to hear any in my woods this season.
Such a shame the thrush made it all the way here from Latin America only to get
hit by a car.

On a happier note we saw 4 male Baltimore Orioles in her backyard on Lansing
Station Rd. (600's) yesterday.

OT: And there is a mother Red Fox with 7 kits in an abandoned woodchuck hole in
yard of another neighbor. Dan set up a 'cam' to view them on Periscope that
runs when it is not rainy. (Camera not waterproof). "dan cam"
Sarah set up her blind & photographed kits this morning.

[cayugabirds-l] Newman Municipal Golf Course, Th 5/3

2018-05-03 Thread Mark Chao
On Thursday morning (6:15 AM), I found a heavily-marked PEREGRINE FALCON at
the base of the Jetty Woods next to the Newman Municipal Golf Course. I
don’t have a lot of experience with different ages and populations of this
species, but it seems to me that this is an adult, maybe of a race that we
don’t commonly see around here. Here is a checklist with some photos. I
welcome feedback.

https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S45205836

The GREAT HORNED OWL chicks were in the nest with their mother a branch
away as usual. Last night one owlet had branched out to perch about 3 feet
above the nest. That was the first time I’d seen either of the young owls
completely off the nest.

There were many other recent arrivals around too this morning, including a
BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER, AMERICAN REDSTART, YELLOW WARBLER, a few
WARBLING VIREOS, a pair of BALTIMORE ORIOLES, BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS, and
others.
