[cayugabirds-l] Odd RW Blackbird plumage

2020-04-02 Thread jaredwdawson
This evening (4-2) around sunset I was doing a raptor watch for the DEC on
Black Rd just north of hwy 79, town of Mecklenburg. No dice with raptors, but
one of the male red-winged blackbirds had quite interesting plumage. Its
underside was coarsely and darkly streaked like a female, with a buffy color as
the ground. Its head was black and its lesser and median coverts, although
quite prominent and bright, were normal breeding male in appearance. The
undertail coverts were yellowish, the tail white with a moderate black terminal
tail band. The uppertail coverts were bright white as was the tail, but along
with the tail band there was also a central black shaft reminiscent of the
uppertail of a McCown’s Longspur. ( Not sure if this also appeared on the
underside). The greater coverts were tipped white.
This was unlike leucistic birds that I’ve seen which have not appeared so
neatly patterned. The dark head and coverts seem to rule out a first-year male.
Wish I had some pix.
The last week I’ve had a Eastern Screech-Owl singing its monotone trill on and
off, heard from my house, the first I’ve heard in upper Trumansburg village
over the last year and previous winter.
Good solitaire birding,

[cayugabirds-l] Myer's Road Ospreys

2020-04-02 Thread Bob Anderson
This afternoon I was out enjoying some solitary birding heading down
Myer's Road toward Myer's Point Park and when I came opposite the Osprey
platform on the south side of the road I encountered 4 ospreys (I think
it was 4 although I only saw three simultaneously). They were flying in
circles close to each other. It turned out one had a fish in a claw and
the others were interested. After a couple of minutes the group
dispersed a bit and the one with the fish flew to the nest. Shortly
after that another osprey joined the fisher. I thought for a while they
were going to mate but the one with the fish was more interested in eating.

At the private marina next to Myer's Point were a dozen American Coots,
a pair of hooded mergansers, a one greater scaup.

[cayugabirds-l] West Danby

2020-04-02 Thread Geo Kloppel
I took Sandy (my dog) for a (leashed) walk at the L-P Preserve today,
incidentally encountering:

A Northern Mockingbird, perched in shrubs across the road from the main parking
lot. It was eating rosehips and occasionally darting down to the ground for
insects.

A Horned Lark. Although there are extensive fields of stubble and a cow pasture
nearby, this lone bird was concentrating all its energies on a tiny area right
in the parking lot, about 30 feet from where I’d parked. I got out, and even
set up my scope for a closer view of what it was doing. It pecked at this small
area continuously for a good ten minutes while I watched. After it flew off, I
inspected the spot for any clues about what it was after. I thought I might
find tiny insects or weed seeds or whatnot, but I couldn’t see anything of the
sort. Instead, the one thing that distinguished this spot from the rest of the
parking lot was that someone had spilled a thin scatter of crushed oyster shell
or clam shell there, like the stuff we offer to laying hens to keep their
eggshells strong...

Later I witnessed a pretty agonic-looking Bluebird chase.

Tree Swallows were busy sweeping the air over the preserve’s numerous bodies of
water.

-Geo

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Rd. Red-tailed Hawks with nest material!

2020-04-02 Thread Marie P. Read
On my walk up Mt Pleasant Rd this afternoon I watched a Red-tailed Hawk pair
circling over Gladys Birdsall's woods, a couple of minutes later one of them
came cruising low over the woods with a trailing clump of grasses in its
talons...nesting material. It headed slowly west and disappeared behind the
trees which makes me think the possible nest might be a bit beyond Gladys'
property. First I've seen evidence of nesting in this spot although I have
often seen RTHA there, usually in winter. I HAVE seen evidence of RTHA nesting
at the junction of Mt Pleasant Rd and Baker Hill Rd, but maybe this is a
different pair.

I don’t think they Were vocalizing, although as usual, they fly to a distant
place if you try to get anywhere near them.
I did not notice beaks open or moving.
This reminds me to listen to their calls for next time!

Hey Donna - were any of your Kestrels vocalizing? That is one of the few local
birds that I have never recorded. I would love to have that opportunity!

[cayugabirds-l] Game Farm Road Osprey

2020-04-02 Thread Lois E. Chaplin
Was watching a Red-tailed Hawk hunting the field adjacent to Ellis Hollow Road
when I panned to the Osprey nest by the ball field. Looked like a head (in
addition to the perch) sticking out. Lo and behold, the Osprey took flight and
confirmed its identity.

[cayugabirds-l] Fox Sparrow @ Arboretum

2020-04-02 Thread Suan Hsi Yong
This morning, while photographing blackbird songs (sic) at the arboretum
(with Marie), a curious whistling song persisted from behind, which I
eventually tracked down as coming from a Fox Sparrow. Couldn't get close
enough to get a video, alas.
