Hi Betsy,
Might you post this to the list? I don’t have access.
Jerry

Let me add another aspect of Steve’s legacy. I am one of the hundreds of
‘Puffineers’ who served as researchers, interns, and volunteers on Project
Puffin. So many conservation careers have been launched and furthered over
the past 45 years!
Thank you, Steve, for lifetime memories and experiences!
Check out the book Project Puffin by Steve and Derrick Jackson to learn
details of the project’s rocky beginning.

Yes, it was inspiring to hear how Steve's work on the Maine coast has been
applied to so many other conservation projects worldwide!

To follow up on Jerry's book recommendation-- When the books are purchased
through Project Puffin’s Online store, the proceeds go to seabird
conservation in Maine.

[cayugabirds-l] Blackbirds, all kinds

We just had a mixed flock of over a hundred blackbirds, including red-winged
blackbirds, grackles, cowbirds, and starlings. There were a few female
cowbirds, and possibly some female red-winged, although probably more likely
they were juvenile males. Couldn’t get a good look!

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Goose migration this morning

2021-03-09 Thread Dave K
The South end of the park, where Lower Lake Rd meets Rt89, has good views of
open water but the ice edge is still a bit far to the East. Good scope views of
large numbers of ducks, geese, swans, gulls, eagles..
The water should get much closer the next couple of days. Sunny morning
viewing is tough there.

Does anyone know if there is open water at any viewing spots on Lower Lake Road
or Cayuga Lake State Park?

[cayugabirds-l] Bald Eagle

2021-03-09 Thread Donna Lee Scott
Perched in top of beach cottonwood, so seen well from my kitchen.

Eagle has about half & half white & black feathers evenly streaked on head &
mostly yellow beak with a dark tip.

For a couple seconds when first seen I thought “Osprey” because the dark head
feathers seemed like a dark streak thru the eye.

Could not see tail well, but it seemed a similar mix of white & dark feathers.

It flew away & I didn’t see which way it went.

Hearing lots of Canada Geese overhead.

[cayugabirds-l] Open letter to Steve Kress

2021-03-09 Thread Betsy Darlington
Hi, Steve,
What you have done over the past roughly 50 years is truly inspiring. You
have shown what can be accomplished with a lot of patience, creativity,
ingenuity, perseverance, and persistence. I heard you talk about your
puffin project when it was in its infancy, and I never dreamed what
far-reaching - indeed, worldwide - effects this would have - not just on
birds, but on so many people you have rallied to the cause.
In this turbulent world, it is such a relief to hear some good news!
Thank you for all that you have done and are doing - and for your wonderful
talk last night!
Betsy Darlington

[cayugabirds-l] Yellow headed blackbird

2021-03-09 Thread Dave K
Just got a brief look at a striking male yellow-headed blackbird just west of
the Durling road and Gravel road intersection.Seneca Falls.
The mixed flock of about 2000 blackbirds is very active but as of 8:45 is in
the corn field to the SW edging back to the yard just West of the intersection
