[cayugabirds-l] Injured Kestrel

2021-06-26 Thread Dave Nutter
I just got a call from Reuben Stoltzfus. A Mennonite friend of his who lives
just north of the former Seneca Army Depot has a slightly injured Kestrel which
he would like to give to someone who can either care of it or take it to
someone who can (a rehabber or the Swanson Center at Cornell for example). The
bird can fly some but not very well, and I understand it is currently captive
and being given food & water.

If you can help, please call
Cleason Horst
315-521-1488
He is at 4396 MacDougal Center Rd, which is a block east of 96A in the block
which is north of 336 and south of Leader Rd.

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Montezuma Main Pool?

2021-06-26 Thread Muhammad Arif
I was there last night, too. To Alyssa’s list, I will add Osprey, Cedar
Waxwing, a female Wood Duck with 6 ducklings, Indigo Bunting, and a single
Trumpeter Swan (which appeared to be sitting on a nest?). Images of the swan
and ducklings are on eBird: https://ebird.org/checklist/S90785075.

Hi Sandy and all,

I was there last night.

The Main Pool has been drained this summer for management purposes. See here
for the Refuge's explanation:
https://www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=1919598661523947=gm.1081190235912319

There is still a stream of water running through the middle and along the drive
as you move closer to the spillway. We saw many Canada geese and goslings of
all ages, Bald Eagles (scan with your binos on the ground way out, they often
sit on the muck), Turkey Vultures, Great Blue Herons, Mallards (and ducklings),
Green-winged Teal, Common Gallinule, American Coot, a few Gadwall, a single
Great Egret, Killdeer, Yellowlegs, Red-winged Blackbirds, Ring-billed Gulls,
Black Terns, and Common Grackles. I didn't see them last night, but I did see
them Monday: the family of Sandhill Cranes that have been there all season. 2
adults and a very leggy baby! Here is another link to a bird survey done at the
Refuge earlier this week:
https://www.facebook.com/FriendsoftheMWC/photos/pcb.10159330589425688/10159330569450688/

Of course there were also Marsh Wrens calling, never seen, and Song Sparrows,
Common Yellowthroats, Yellow Warblers, Eastern Kingbirds, Barn and Tree
Swallows, Purple Martins, and probably more I'm forgetting.

The Prothonotary Warbler on Armitage Rd was singing and very cooperative even
at 6:30pm.

Enjoy!

[cayugabirds-l] Unknown avian disease

2021-06-26 Thread John Gregoire
Does anyone have solid data on
"Although not recorded in NY yet, we are hearing reports from other states
(along the East Coast to Ohio) of nestling and fledgling
songbirds, including blue jays, cardinals, robins, starlings, and common
grackles that are being impacted by an undetermined health
concern presenting with ocular lesions and/or neurological issues. The
ocular signs are similar to *Mycoplasma gallisepticum*, but appear to be
different as there is no sinus involvement. Most common eye lesions
include swelling, corneal lesions, and crust or pus in the eyes. The
neurologic signs include head tremors or seizures, inability to stand or
leg paralysis, and increased vocalizations.

Please take precautions if you are handling birds for rehabilitation or
collecting for submission; wear gloves and appropriate PPE, and wash hands
before touching other birds or animals.

Please contact your regional DEC Wildlife offices
 or the CWHL (c...@cornell.edu
) with info on sick or
dead songbirds that you find in NYS."

Is anyone at CLO working this problem? I have seen dire warnings to
rehabbers and some very confusing posts that were more scare than data rich.

2021-06-26 Thread Peter Saracino
Hi Sandy.
I usually help with the Friday surveys at the Refuge but had to be in
Massachusetts. However I believe Jackie Bakker did a Friday survey and as
soon as she posts her results I will send them along.
