Bird was still present at 5pm-ish on Warren Rd. just north of the Moakley
House. The bird was favoring the roadside across from the house with a
white picket fence and a realty sign.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Hawthorn Orchard: Worm-eating Warbler

For anyone interested in trying for the bird, it seems to be sticking to
the north "ravine" area right on the trail. I walked towards the rec way
and didn't have luck, but on my way back to the car the bird was right over
the trail foraging very low and singing sporadically. It was mostly giving
complex song and calls, with some typical songs every so often. Very
cooperative when it was close.

[cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Basin Osprey Nest Tracking

Hi all,

To cut down on the number of email threads related to Osprey nests, I'm
creating a thread we can use to track the nests to keep them all in one
handy location. If you want to report a new Osprey nest or update on the
progress of a given nest, please reply to this email/thread.

Ospreys are very common now and there are a lot of nests and that means a
lot of emails. It's great to hear about them, but it also means other
emails can get lost in the shuffle.

If you do find dead birds like this (if they're fresh and not freeze-dried
or damaged) you can store them in your freezer in plastic bag so they can
be donated to the Cornell Museum of Vertebrates the Cornell Lab of
Ornithology (when they eventually are open for the public again). I'm not
sure if there's any system in place currently for accepting specimens. If
you decide to store one, you should put a little slip of paper in the bag
that says the date, location, and how the bird died (or how you found it).
You don't have to worry about identifying the bird if you don't know what
it is. And freezer bags are always better, since they're made for keeping
things safe in a freezer.

[cayugabirds-l] Sapsucker Woods Sandhill Cranes

At dusk this evening I had three Sandhill Cranes flying very low over route
13 headed east, seen from the parking lot at Sapsucker Woods closest to the
airport. They looked like the might be landing somewhere nearby, so it
might be worth checking the area in the morning if you want to see them.

Shawn Billerman mentioned to me that the Phalarope looked a bit sad, with a

[cayugabirds-l] (Deceased) Yellow-crowned Night-Heron in Ithaca

Hi all,

I just picked up a Yellow-crowned Night-heron specimen from the Swanson
Wildlife Clinic. They said the bird had been found on Route 13 near the
Ithaca Airport on October 20. It's going to be prepared for the Museum of
Vertebrates sometime this week.

According to Jay McGowan and Tim Lenz this is the first record for that
species in eBird and the first or second for the county, but they can
correct me on that if I'm wrong.

[cayugabirds-l] Sapsucker Woods migrants

[Brad Walker]

New migrants today included Indigo Bunting near the powerline cut,
Chestnut-sided Warbler, Black-throated Blue Warbler and a MOURNING WARBLER
that sang several phrases near the powerline cut. I was not able to locate
it.

Also, on Tuesday I had the Great Horned Owl getting mobbed by American
Crows near the East Trail map. The trees are beginning to leaf out so it's
getting harder to see into its roosting area.

[cayugabirds-l] Sapsucker Woods this morning

In addition to the tanager there were several more migrants around
Sapsucker Woods this morning:

Baltimore Oriole, Warbling Vireo, Blue-headed Vireo, many Yellow-rumped
Warblers, Common Yellowthroat, Gray Catbird, Great Crested Flycatcher and a
group of at least 100 White-throated Sparrows moving through the brush.

I also watched a Great Blue Heron carrying a stick  as it headed towards
Route 13, seen from the powerline cut.

An Ovenbird was also singing on and off near the eastern edge of the east
side this morning, too. A Rose-breasted Grosbeak, a Nashville Warbler, and
a number of Yellow-rumped Warblers were also on the Wilson Trail at about
7am.

[cayugabirds-l] Hanshaw Road Cackling Goose

A/The CACKLING GOOSE was present with the Canada Geese in the corn field on
Hanshaw Road adjacent to Bluegrass Lane. The bird appeared at dusk and fed
relatively close to the road before moving to the back. Jay managed to get
some good photos of the bird. I'll check for it again in the morning when I
leave for work.

[cayugabirds-l] Sapsucker Woods Virginia Rail update

Hi all,

Now that my hands are free: This bird was found by Martha Fischer in the
small marshy areas near the staff entrances to the Lab of Ornithology. It's
moving between the two marshy areas along the wast side of the building
(sometimes running through the culverts) but it is frequenting the
north-most cattail filled bit. The bird had been giving its grunting call
on and off for half an hour. You should be able to hear it from anywhere in
the immediate vicinity if it does that.

flying over the corn fields on Hanshaw Road, no doubt brought by the Winds
of Satan that caused the flooding in my home.

[cayugabirds-l] Possible Olive-sided Flycatcher at Sapsucker Woods

Hi all,

On my walk this morning I saw what I believed was an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER
on the back pond at Sapsucker Woods. I saw the bird in silhouette from the
Sherwood Platform, but it was a large flycatcher with a nice peaked head. I
ALSO thought I heard the last part of this bird's song several times as I
was walking the Wilson Trail, which would be rather odd. Anyway, if you're
in the area, feel free to look for it!

[cayugabirds-l] Sapsucker Woods migrants

Hi all,

There were a few migrants in Sapsucker Woods, mostly around the Sherwood
Platform. There was a mixed flock of BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, RED-EYED
VIREO, WARBLING VIREO, HOUSE WREN and COMMON YELLOWTHROATS. There were also
a few BALTIMORE ORIOLES hanging around.

[cayugabirds-l] Sapsucker Woods and Northeast Ithaca

Hi all,

Despite the wind and cold and wet, there were a few migrants a Sapsucker
Woods this morning, mostly clustered around the Charlie Harper bench area.
A BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER was foraging with a very cooperative pair of
BAY-BREASTED WARBLERS,  and there were numerous ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS,
including a young male with adult plumage but a white eyebrow, and another
male at the Sherwood Platform that was unwilling (but able) to fly as I
approached.

On my ride in, I found a pair of MERLIN in the Salem Drive neighborhood.
These birds have been around for a week being quite vocal. Today I watched
as the male carried in some prey, gave it to the female, then copulated
with her. There is a possible nest (old crow nest) nearby, but I haven't
seen them visit yet.

[cayugabirds-l] Lindsay-Parsons 10May

Hi all,

Scott Haber and I went to the Lindsay-Parsons Preserve this morning for
some recording and birding. There were many breeding birds (and ticks!) but
the highlights included a BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO that was calling on and off
for an hour and an ALDER FLYCATCHER that we managed to get a recording of.

The ticks seemed to be worst on the other side of the railroad tracks.

Hi all,

Matt Medler and Dan Lane found a WILSON'S WARBLER foraging very low and
very cooperatively on the Wilson Trail directly behind the photo
blind/feeding area, while on the inner leg. It was still there shortly
after they found it, but it was being silent and foraging low.

[cayugabirds-l] Sapsucker Woods evening birds

Thanks again to Susan for the Cape May Warbler report, it was still present
between 6:15 and 7:15 in the same tree, joined by a Blue-winged Warbler. A
Merlin was also in the area, being chased by an Eastern Kingbird in a
contest to see who could be the most annoying.

The two beavers were also on the pond, taking a break from ruining the
trees to adorably munch on the lilypads.

[cayugabirds-l] Cass Park Birds (including white-winged gull)

Hi all,

At about 1pm today, Nathan Goldberg and I had a white-winged gull (that we
thought was an Iceland Gull) soaring over The Boatyard Grill. It appeared
to be the same size and proportions-ish as the Herring Gull soaring with
it. Other birds of note were a low Common Loon over the water, a Caspian
Tern and a Merlin that flew over the boathouses while calling.

There are also many Siskins in Northeast Ithaca near Sapsucker Woods. There

While at Myers this morning, I thought I heard an EASTERN PHOEBE give a
single chip note from the private area where the short-eared owl roosted
some time ago (this is directly south across the channel from the
lighthouse). I only heard it once and didn't see anything, but there were
no starlings in the spot where I heard it, so keep your eyes/ears open if
you're there.

[cayugabirds-l] No Gyrfalcon this morning on Stahl Road

Hi all,

Scott Haber and I drove around the area for about an hour this morning with
no luck. We did see a flying Pileated Woodpecker that we hoped would get
plucked from the air, but no luck. There are a lot of Crows, Red-tailed
Hawks and Larks in the area to watch in the meantime.

Scott and I also stopped at Dean's Cove where we had several Long-tailed
Ducks, about 30 Red-breasted Mergansers, 9 Bluebirds and a drumming
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, in addition to other common waterfowl.

A lone WINTER WREN was scurrying about at the north end of Sapsucker Woods
Road, opposite the house with all the bird feeders. There was also a group

[cayugabirds-l] Bluegrass Lane CATTLE EGRET

Hi all,

Five of the CATTLE EGRETS were flying ESE over the red barns at Bluegrass
Lane about 20-30 minutes ago. They were flying in a tight group. Earlier I
had a single bird soaring with the gulls that seemed to be heading west,
but I lost track of it.

The only other sighting of note was a very high group of about 50 SNOW
GEESE flying south in a messy V.

I went to the Freese Rd. garden plots this morning and found a ton of
migrants, but nothing too unusual. The highlights were a single first
winter WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW seen briefly, then heard singing a raspy song
one time, and a juvenile PEREGRINE FALCON coursing over Bluegrass Lane
chasing things.

This morning on the Wilson Trail there was a flyover PINE SISKIN (heard
simultaneously by Wes Hochachka) as well as several NORTHERN WATERTHRUSHES,
CAPE MAY WARBLER, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, and BLUE-HEADED VIREO. Most of the
birds were around the Sherwood Platform/Charlie Harper Bench.

[cayugabirds-l] Cornell Arboretum Migrants (16Aug)

Hi all,

While walking an adorable corgi with Scott Haber today at the Cornell
Arboretum we came across a PEREGRINE FALCON perched on a radio tower near
the overlook with the gong. It was pretty obvious and should be findable if
it's in the same spot.

There was also a mixed species flock that included BLUE-WINGED WARBLER,
RED-EYED VIREO, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK and presumably a young COMMON
YELLOWTHROAT that sang like a Canada Warbler.

[cayugabirds-l] Sapsucker Woods 5/23 Flycatchers and Warblers

Hi all,

There was a lot of quiet activity on the Wilson Trail North this morning.
The highlights were a calling (but unseen) YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER,
giving its pewee-like chu-wee calls near the feeders/blind along the pond
shore, and a male MOURNING WARBLER foraging along the trail behind the
north feeders near the building. The bird sang a single phrase quietly,
then popped out for about thirty seconds before disappearing again.

[cayugabirds-l] Sapsucker Woods Prairie Warbler

Hi all, Scott Haber and I took a steel through Sapsucker Woods this morning
and found a few new arrivals, including a BALTIMORE ORIOLE and a PRAIRIE
WARBLER singing from the powerline cut as we left.

[cayugabirds-l] Lab of O Waterthrush

Hi all,

There was a LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH on the Wilson Trail North this morning.
It called several times as it passed over the trail and landed along the
northern leg of the stream at the footbridge.

There was also a Canada Goose on its nest and four AMERICAN WIGEON flew
into the back pond.
