Re: [cayugabirds-l] Fledgling great horned owl?

2014-05-01 Thread Evan Barrientos
Hi Claire,
This sounds like a really cool observation (and yes it is a Great Horned
Owl), but in the future I would advise others not to post specific
locations of potentially vulnerable birds. If this bird has been abandoned
and/or isn't doing well, it would be better to not send people there who
might accidentally disturb it or even try to keep it.
Best,
Evan

 Hello,

My husband and I came across an enormous fledgling owl in our woods on
Monday afternoon, 4/28. To my untrained eye it looked like a Great Horned
Owl, but we have heard a Barred Owl in our woods recently. It was still
partly downy and had some adult wing feathers. It was perched on the end of
a log, alert and watching our every move. It clacked its beak loudly and
puffed up its feathers dramatically, but did not attempt to fly. I remember
its bright eyes and circular head movements. It was impressive!

At 10:30am this morning we saw it again, a very short distance away from
where it was on Monday, perched on another fallen log. This time, however,
it was unresponsive to our presence (we were making plenty of noise). It
was fluffed up and its eyes were barely open, and it did not clack or raise
its feathers. It had been sitting there for a while, as evidenced by the
droppings beneath. I found the change in its behavior concerning.

I am wondering if this is normal behavior for a fledgling owl? Was it
 merely sleepy and cold?

If you would like to come and see it, it is on our property at 786 Elm St
Ext. in Ithaca. To get there, go up West Hill on Elm St, continue past
Westhaven Rd and ValleyView, to where the road levels out. You will see a
black mailbox on the left w/786 just before the road dips down into Coy
Glen. Our driveway is on the right, across from the mailbox, heading into
the forest. The owl is located on the left side of the driveway towards the
end of the straight stretch, before the driveway veers right. When last
seen it was perched on a fallen log on the near side of the gorge. Walk for
less than a minute into the forest on the edge of the gorge to locate it.
My husband Mark will be home this afternoon, his # is 227-4328. If you have
trouble finding it, he might be able to help.

[cayugabirds-l] Ecuador Conservation Blog

2013-04-25 Thread Evan Barrientos
Dear Cayugabirders,

Greetings from Ecuador!
Please pardon this post not directly related to birds. Some of you may remember
the blog I kept last summer on taking children birding in Mexico
(www.ebarrientos.blogspot.com). Since there were many of you who told me how
much you enjoyed receiving updates from my blog, I wanted to let you all know
that I'll be keeping another blog this summer while I research a shade coffee
initiative in the mountains of Ecuador. We all know that shade coffee is quite
an interesting topic for bird conservation, and while my study and blog will
include this aspect, it will also deal with topics such as poverty reduction,
sustainable agriculture, and the coexistence of humans and nature. The link to
the first post is below, as well as the link to the blog. If you would like to
receive updates, please send me an email, as I will not be sending emails to
the listserve this time. Thank you for reading, and I hope you will join me on
this adventure.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Reported Connecticut Warbler, Sapsucker Woods

2012-09-12 Thread Evan Barrientos
Would the person who corrected David's ID care to share with the group how to
reliable separate the two species from a view like David's photo? I imagine
this is a very common confusion and it would be good to clarify to avoid future
false alarms, and just for the sake of bird IDs in general.

[cayugabirds-l] Bird Photos from this Spring

2012-05-28 Thread Evan Barrientos
Hi all,
Although I am no longer in Ithaca for the summer, I wanted to share a gallery
of NY birds from this year so far that I have just put up. The photos are
mostly from birding trips or hikes when I did not take enough photos to make a
whole gallery, so I compiled them all into one.

Highlights include:
-'Ezra' eating a Rock Pigeon at Cornell (Closeups!)
-Long-tailed Ducks at Myer's Point
-The Red-tailed Hawk nest in Fall Creek Gorge, chicks being fed
-Some Hawthorn Orchard migrants
-American Woodcock (Closeups)
-A few grassland birds at Finger Lakes National Forest

[cayugabirds-l] Fwd: eBird Report - Palmer Woods, May 9, 2012

2012-05-09 Thread Evan Barrientos
Fantastic morning at Palmer Woods, Cornell Campus today, even though I got
there at 10:40am. That was my first time there and I certainly was impressed.
43 species and 15 warblers, plus beautiful and variable habitat. BAY-BREASTED
WARBLER and female MOURNING WARBLER were highlights. At first I thought the
Mourning was a Connecticut, but after getting a few looks I realized its
eye-ring was too narrow and incomplete.

A word of caution: At one point a man in his 20s walked by who was probably on
drugs or mentally insane. He was talking very loudly to himself about spirits
being channeled through his grandfather's watch. Fortunately, as he approached
and walked by me he did not even seem to notice I was there. Not saying he was
harmful, but you never know what to expect from people like him.

Also, there was a CAPE MAY WARBLER sining from the spruces at 310 Triphammer
Road, along with a nice flock of warblers and a SCARLET TANAGER.

Good birding!
Evan

I was at Arnot Forest from 1pm-4pm yesterday and did manage to hear and see a
fair number of migrants, including FOY CANADA WARBLERS. Also found two
beautiful SPRING SALAMANDERS in the creek. eBird list is below, but the best
highlight was definitely having two LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSHES foraging and
calling about 8ft away from me in the creek at eye level (with a spring
salamander directly below me).
Good birding,
Evan

[cayugabirds-l] Woodcock Photos

2012-05-03 Thread Evan Barrientos
Hi everyone,
Here are 4 close shots of an American Woodcock that I photographed last night
(May 2) in the field bordered by Snyder and Cherry Rd. north of the airport.
Hard to believe, these were taken handheld, manually focusing, and without an
external flash! Such an awesome bird and one of my favorite Spring traditions.

[cayugabirds-l] L. Waterthrush @ Shindagin

2012-04-22 Thread Evan Barrientos
Managed to get fairly close to a LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH singing at the bottom of
a ravine and a WINTER WREN that seemed to be singing in response. Watched the
LOWA singing from a perch and then forage in the rocky stream. No photos, but I
recorded some good audio. Other bird activity was mostly quiet in the poor
weather. 1 PURPLE FINCH was heard singing back in the conifers near the
wetland.
Best,

2012-04-17 Thread Evan Barrientos
Spent a nice 4 hours walking around the pond this morning at SSW. Lots of
sining YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS! Less activity than I had hoped for but still
good birding. Interestingly, it wasn't until around 10am that I began to see
the YRWAs. Several NORTHERN FLICKERS and YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS chasing each
other. Nothing rare, but interesting species included 2 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS at the
south end of the pond, 1 BROAD-TAILED HAWK, a MINK by the small pond on the
west side of the large pond, and 2 NORTHERN WATER SNAKES mating at Fuller

[cayugabirds-l] Travels in Bolivia- A short film

Hi all,
I've just finished and uploaded a short film on my stay in Bolivia last January

http://ebarrientos.smugmug.com/Travel/Bolivia-HD-Video/21764449_zbCf2S#!i=1791195981k=PfPvLTHlb=1s=L
The film is not strictly about birds, although several beautiful birds do make
appearances. Rather, it briefly overviews the incredible diversity of habitats,
landscapes, people, and lifestyles that make up the country. Hope you all take
a look and enjoy!

Best,

[cayugabirds-l] Why do birds sing to themselves?

2012-03-28 Thread Evan Barrientos
For the last 5 minutes there's been an adult male Dark-eyed Junco just 8ft away
from me foraging on the ground outside Mann Library on Cornell Campus.
Sporadically, he's been quietly singing to himself while he forages, but so
quietly that nothing further than 10ft away could hear. The bird is also alone.
I've seen other birds do this before on occasion, such as American Robins, but
I don't know why? Are they practicing their songs? Anyone have an answer?
Thanks,
Evan B

[cayugabirds-l] Snyder Road Woococks and Waterfowl

2012-03-14 Thread Evan Barrientos
Hi everyone,
This evening starting at about 7:20pm I explored the pond near the intersection
of Snyder and Mohawk Roads before listening for Woodcocks. On the pond I saw 50
RING-NECKED DUCKS, 3 HOODED MERGANSERS, 1 GREAT-BLUE HERON, 2 WOOD DUCKS, and
several Mallards and Canada Geese. I also found a fresh dead ERMINE in the
field, still in white fur. There also was a pair of EASTERN BLUEBIRDS in
another nearby field. Around 7:45, 1 AMERICAN WOODCOCK began calling from the
brush, but after waiting 15 min he only took flight once.

I drove to another small field near the intersection of Cherry and Warren Roads
and got very close to another Woodcock calling and doing flight displays. I was
able to locate and watch the bird from about 20 ft away with a light. The bird
made no significant effort hide or escape. It walked around for a minute,
poking the grass with its bill, and then flew away.

However, I found the trails very quiet overall, until finding a second mixed
flock when returning on the other side of the lake at 10:00, with CS WARBLER,
COMMON YELLOWTHROATS, and another BTG Warbler and Magnolia Warblers.

[cayugabirds-l] 60 species Sapsucker Woods Yesterday

2011-05-12 Thread Evan Barrientos
Hi everyone,
I know there were quite a few reports from Sapsucker Woods yesterday, but I did
see a few things that I didn't see reported. I had 14 warbler species,
including close looks at 7:40 of the BAY-BREASTED in the pine trees near the
feeders. Yellow-rumped Warblers were DRIPPING from the trees along the Wilson
Trail boardwalk. It was hard to estimate, but I'd say about 40. Saw one male
and female SCARLET TANAGER. A male RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD was performing his
pendulum flight display for a female on the east side of the pond. Heard one
RUSTY BLACKBIRD calling repeatedly at the south end of the pond. It was a great
morning with really impressive numbers. I still can't believe I had 60 species
in such a small area! Photos coming soon! See checklist below.

[cayugabirds-l] Sapsucker Woods- 2 snakes

2011-04-27 Thread Evan Barrientos
Hi everyone,
I took a very short walk in Sapsucker Woods before going to work this afternoon
and was lucky enough to spot a handsome Eastern Garter Snake and a fairly large
Northern Water Snake resting just a few feet away from each other in the
transitional area after the boardwalk heading south. Not sure how common the
latter is, but I thought I'd mention it.

Also saw Common Grackles, a Hairy Woodpecker, and a Red-bellied Woodpecker
excavating a nest cavity. Briefly heard a Red-breasted Nuthatch.

Good birding,

[cayugabirds-l] Hello and Winter Photos

2011-03-26 Thread Evan Barrientos
Hi everyone,
I was subscribed to the list last fall but I never got around to introducing
myself. My name is Evan Barrientos and I'm a student at Cornell University.
I've been birding for about four years and I also do a lot of nature
photography.

These photos are a bit late, but I'd like to share a couple links, one of
feeder birds at the Lab of O (including a Rusty Blackbird) taken on Feb 25 ,
and some very poor quality documentation shots of the male Eurasian
Green-winged Teal at Lake George Jr. Hopefully I'll be sending many more eBird
lists and photo links in the future.
