[cayugabirds-l] Northern Shrike at Landon Rd and 79

One of the most cooperative Shrikes I've seen in the county. I initially
saw it at noon in an unsuccessful pursuit of a single Snow Bunting and both
remained visible from Landon Rd for most of the 20 minutes I was there.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] URGENT ALERT: Dodge Rd Spruce Woods may be cut down for massive Solar Farm on Dodge rd, STARTING in APRIL !!

2017-03-20 Thread Jeff Gerbracht
As someone who believes we MUST reduce fossil fuel usage as quickly as
possible and as someone who frequently goes birding along Dodge Rd., this
is an issue which I personally grapple with. These woods are utilized by
Red-breasted Nuthatch, Golden-crowned Kinglet, migrating Cape May Warblers
and in the past, Long-eared Owl and on the other hand, the woods are an
artificial monoculture and the proposal seems to me to be removal of a
portion of the woods, not the entire lot.

Can I say we must use more renewable energy, yet also say, not here. I
really struggle with this. Any development will have negative consequences
on a micro scale, but I think the macro scale issues of fossil fuels vs
renewables, in this case, outweigh the micro scale issues of losing a
portion of a spruce woodlot. If this area were an endangered habitat, i
might feel differently.

My 2 cents,
Jeff Gerbracht

Re: [cayugabirds-l] American three-toed woodpecker

2014-03-09 Thread Jeff Gerbracht
Martin,
I think the red / rarely yellow crown patch on Hairy and Downy would
indicate a juvenile bird. Might see that in the summer/fall, but I'd be
really surprised to see it this time of year. Others on the list will
surely correct me if I'm wrong with the timing of when these crown feathers
get replaced ;)Best thing is if the bird comes back again, try and get
a photo. American Black-backed and Three-toed would both be true rarities
in our region and I'm sure many of us birders would like to see it.
  Cheers,
Jeff Gerbracht

  Dave,

Hairys come to our suet feeder often. It's not a Hairy. I'd say that the
Hairys don't have as much bulk as this bird did.

Sorry I don't have more to describe of the body wing colors. The bird
perched on the suet feeder in such a way that I could see only its left
side. What I remember of it is that the belly was black/grey with white
flecks and the wing was similar. Not as much white anywhere as I've seen on
a Hairy, especially the belly. There was also a whitish stripe under its
eye. Later this afternoon there has been a Downy and Hairy at the feeder.
They both had more clear white on their bodies, especially on the underside.

The thing I remember most clearly was its call, the base tone of which
was lower than the hairy's and still lower than the downy's, and the
cheep of it all was somehow richer than that of the downy and hairy.

About size, I'd say that it is hard to know if it was larger or smaller
than the Hairys I've seen, but I said larger because of the bulk of it.

  Best, Marty

The back and sides are more distinguishing between the species, so more
detail would be helpful. I think immature Hairy Woodpeckers occasionally
 show yellow on the crown.

   Dear Marty Susie
Please describe more about the feather patterns on the woodpecker. What
pattern is on its back and sides?

My Sibley guide says the three-toed is a bit smaller than the Hairy
wdpkr. (Altho without the two seen together, size is hard to judge, as they
tell us in Spring Field Ornithology class)

However, the Black-Backed wdpkr, which also has a yellow head patch, is
slightly larger than an Amer. Three Toed and the Hairy.

Both the Black- Backed and Amer. Three-toed Woodpeckers would be rare
here, but w this severe winter weather it seems like anything is possible.
Thanks for more description of the bird.

Hope that this report is not too casual for you all, but we have had
an American three-toed woodpecker at our suet feeder and on a maple tree
nearby today. The feeder is out the window, within 10 feet of our
dining-room table, so we can see it clearly. What we see is the following.
Slightly larger than a Hairy. Head slightly larger. A Yellow stripe on the
front of the top of the head (beginning behind the beak and above the eye
 and extending towards the top).

It has also been on a maple tree about 20 feet away from the feeder,
moving about a bit on the trunk and branches and making a cry unlike those
of the hairy and downy that I have heard: short and chippy, with a timbre
that is bright and brisk, but the base tone is lower than the hairy and
 downy.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Rough-legged Hawk Dark Phase

2014-03-04 Thread Jeff Gerbracht
Dark Rough-legs are one of my favorite birds and I've noticed there seem to
be more around this year. I took a quick look at my eBird sightings for
these and in addition to the one on Burdick Hill, I've seen dark birds
multiple times at Freese Rd, Mt Pleasant, Midline Rd. and along Buffalo Rd
in Caroline. Most recently, there were two on my drive to the lab this
morning, one along Freese and one on Mt Pleasant.
Great winter to be out looking for hawks,
Jeff

The Rough-legged sitting in the tree today was definitely a dark-phase.

[cayugabirds-l] Compost jackpot - Glaucous, Iceland and LBBG this morning

After visiting the compost 3-4 times a week, I finally had some success
this morning which more than made up for all of the gull-less visits I've
had this January.

2 1st year Iceland's were sitting on the compost rows along with 2 Lesser
Black-backed Gulls. But the highlight was definitely the 3rd winter /
adult Glaucous
Gull that appeared from no where, circled the car once and then,
unfortunately, headed off in the direction of Monkey Run.

Wanting to ride our wave of recent luck a little longer, Tilden and I
returned to Myers Park in Lansing on Friday afternoon at about 4:30 PM. We
don’t think we saw anything particularly rare, but the birding was fun and
 challenging.

 ** **

Immediately upon arrival, Tilden exclaimed with surprise and had his
optics up in a split-second. Then he paused, relaxed, and pointed out a
CASPIAN TERN, a species we haven’t seen at rest so far this year. I shared
a little of his shock to see that big red bill after scanning gull after
gull these past couple days on that beach!

 ** **

Again we saw two SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, and by this time the DUNLIN
contingent had swelled to at least four birds. I could swear that I also
saw a yellowlegs fly to the tip of the spit (big, slim gray shorebird with
a white tail) but I couldn’t find it there a few seconds later.

 ** **

Even more puzzling were 15 little shorebirds that I think were
SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS. They all had black legs. Their bills all were
completely straight but also quite sharply pointed. Upperparts were much
more brown than gray (though not brightly rufous), with a lot of
dark-centered feathers. All had very fine streaks on the breast. My
instincts were nagging me the whole time that they were Least Sandpipers
that somehow all showed dark legs (I wondered whether the extreme cold had
anything to do with it). In the end, though, I concluded that analytic ID
should trump impressions in this case, largely because I haven’t closely
studied Semipalmated Sandpipers in breeding plumage, nor gotten a very good
sense of variation in bill shape with this species. The field marks do
seem to add up, on the whole. (I feel certain that these birds weren’t
larger Calidris species, nor rare stints. They did not have white rumps.)

and sexing these birds, though not nearly as much as Chris, and I'm also
leaning towards a female, though it's certainly not an easy or
straightforward call.
   Hope it sticks around,
   Jeff

I think many people have heard that Jeff Gerbracht and I saw a Tufted Duck
at Hog Hole, Ithaca NY today. Here are my checklist notes from eBird along
with a link to my eBird checklist that includes photos and more comments.
You can click the Map link in eBird if you are not familiar with Hog Hole.
Hopefully careful checking of the south end of the lake tomorrow will allow
 others to see the bird.

  eBird Checklist comments:

After an extended eBird meeting that went well into lunch, Jeff
Gerbracht and I decided to go down to Hog Hole to look for the Eared Grebe
that Dave Nutter had seen earlier in the day. We debated whether to scan
from the highway or to come to Hog Hole. Since CLW keeps a Hog Hole list,
he was very interested in going to see the grebe from Hog Hole and Jeff was
more than accommodating. We arrived and after a few minutes of scanning
found the Eared Grebe close to shore. Little did we know at the time, but
the real treat was yet to come! Being good eBirders, we wanted to do good
counts of all the ducks. As Jeff was carefully counting Redheads, he came
upon a very interesting duck and quickly showed me through the scope --
TUFTED DUCK! Aging/sexing is complicated, but clearly not an adult male. As
of this point I believe it is likely a first-year female, but need to be a
bit more work to figure out timing of eye color changes, extent of white
by age and sex, and timing of molt. We managed to get some video and a
few images before the rain started pouring down.

WEATHER: Overcast, initially with light drizzle becoming a heavy and
 soaking downpour. 37F. Calm.

[cayugabirds-l] A little birding this morning, Rough-legged Hawks, Snow Buntings and Longspurs.

2013-01-18 Thread Jeff Gerbracht
Given the paucity of Rough-legged Hawk sightings, at least locally, I was
surprised to find 2, one just south of Purvis Rd (south of Dryden) and the
other in the fields along Creamery Rd. I didn't see the one at Goetchius,
though I looked. From Cornell Lane, I spied a large flock of birds on the
road south, working some freshly spread manure, drove around to Daisy
Hollow Rd, and the flock was just to the south, nearly all Horned Larks but
with a couple Snow Buntings and Lapland Longspurs mixed in. From the
Dryden area, I decided to heard north and west, driving through the dairies
(not much there) and ending up at Milliken Station BR, Lots of
Mallards and Canada Geese, but the lake was choppy and I was being blasted
by the wind off the lake, needless to say, I headed back south to warmer
climes.

   Cheers,

[cayugabirds-l] Redpolls are really starting to arrive.

2013-01-10 Thread Jeff Gerbracht
I've had a flock of around 40 redpolls at our feeders for the last week,
but this morning was different. I glanced out after light and there were
300+ redpolls at and below the feeders. The birds brought to mind an
active bee hive in mid-summer, very cool. Searching through the flock, I
found a single bird which was frosty compared with the other 299+ birds
with a clean rump and a noticeably shorter bill, I never got a good look at
the under tail but from what we could see, there didn't appear to be much
or any streaking, which we could see on other birds. While there is
certainly a gradation between Common and Hoary, this bird fell on the Hoary
side of things A Yard Lifer for me!!!

With the influx of Redpolls continuing to mount, I'd encourage everyone to
enter their observations into eBird. I wonder how many flocks/birds there
are in the region
Cheers and look over those flocks,

Red-necked Phalarope in Brooktondale.  I went right back out

As of 2 PM the bird was still at the small man made pond on Boiceville Rd,
having been seen and photographed by a number of people. This is a
beautiful breeding plumage bird that is very cooperative, coming and
feeding within 20 yards of people at one point. Aside from the birding
community there were at least 6 people who lived right there that got very
good views and were interested in it.

Thanks Steve for finding and posting this wonderful bird!

Also there were Killdeer,  a Spotted Sandpiper, and 3 Least Sandpipers that
I didn't notice until they finally flew.

The pond itself is only about 3 weeks old. I spoke with one of the
contractors there and he said it is only 2 feet deep at it's deepest. As
much as I regret what had been a great field for Woodcocks and field birds
becoming a small development,  it seems the pond has at least some
 potential..

[cayugabirds-l] SFO trip to Braddock Bay today

2012-04-28 Thread Jeff Gerbracht
This morning Wes and I led the 5:30 group to Braddock Bay. A cold
morning and light winds from the north foreshadowed a slow morning at
the banding station. We were treated with a close encounter of a
Peregrine in hot pursuit of an unidentified bird just over the car
while cruising on the throughway and after the required stop at Tim
Hortons, we reached the Banding Station. The morning was indeed slow
though Ruby-crowned Kinglets were in abundance in the woods and the
group also got to see a netted House Wren and Swamp Sparrow. A
single large flock of Blue Jays was migrating very high above the
station but in general migrants were sparse with only a handful of
raptors. Several Sharp-shinned Hawks, a couple Cooper's Hawks, a
single Broad-winged, several Turkey vultures and the highlight of the
trip, at least for me, was a BLACK VULTURE seen from the hawkwatch at
Braddock Bay State Park. I first saw the bird just after we stepped
from the cars, low and heading east and several folks were able to get
brief looks. A few minutes later, i spotted the same? bird higher and
to the south, heading south-west. Keep an eye out tomorrow.

Other good sightings were a breeding plumage Horned Grebe, several
Long-tailed Ducks and a number of Red-breasted Mergansers.

All in all a good day considering the cold weather.

Jeff

[cayugabirds-l] Monday Night Seminar a the Lab

Leo Douglas is currently a lecturer at Columbia University, with a
strong interest in the social and ecological impacts of human /
wildlife conflicts will be giving the Monday Night Seminar at the Lab

talk will focus on his research in the Caribbean island of Dominica
which has had success in furthering conservation by utilizing the
beautiful Imperial Parrot as a Flagship species.

Flagship or Battleship? Unintended consequences of the use of an
Amazona parrot as a conservation flagship in the Caribbean by Leo
Douglas

This should be a very interesting talk and given the trend in
conservation of focusing conservation campaigns on single species,
it'll be illuminating as well.
I encourage everyone who can to attend this one.

[cayugabirds-l] Common Redpolls

2010-12-23 Thread Jeff Gerbracht
We were planning on driving out of state last night but circumstances
prevented our planned departure, luckily, because we were greeted this
morning with 2 Common Redpolls mixed in with the Goldfinches at our feeders
this morning. I hope they show up at everyone else's feeders as well, makes
a nice Christmas present.
Happy Holidays and Good Birding everyone,
 Jeff

[cayugabirds-l] Bohemian Waxwing

2010-11-17 Thread Jeff Gerbracht
While heading to campus this morning (10:30), there was a single Bohemian
Waxwing in a 100+ flock of Cedars along Sapsucker Woods Rd. They were on
the E side of the road where there are a large number of red berries, a
couple 100 yards S of the curve/corner at the Lab.

[cayugabirds-l] Sapsucker Woods this morning

2010-05-06 Thread Jeff Gerbracht
I am borrowing Jeff's computer to post because mine is being worked on...

Sapsucker Woods was hopping this morning. Lots and lots of
Yellow-rumped Warblers but also a hybrid GOLDEN-WINGED BLUE-WINGED--I
think it was a Brewster's--it was mostly white with a blue back,
yellow wing bars, a yellow cap, and a yellow wash on the upper breast.
It was singing a Blue-winged song--still singing when I came in along
the northeast side of the pond. Other highlights--multiples of all:

Northern Parula
Blackburnian
Black-throated Blue
Black-throated Green
Palm
Yellow

Spotted Sandpiper in Fuller Wetlands
Yellow-billed Cuckoos-2-at back of pond
Wood Thrushes

And probably more I am forgetting.

Thanks for the computer, Jeff.

2010-04-30 Thread Jeff Gerbracht
On stepping outside this morning, I was greeted by a singing
Blackburnian Warbler, mixed in with some Yellow-rumps and Blue-headed
Vireos. And a short while later, I heard my first Ovenbird of the
year. Things certainly started coming back last night.
