[cayugabirds-l] Scissor-tailed Flycatcher in Chenango County

2015-06-03 Thread Matthew A. Young
Scissor-Tailed Flycatcher

Today (yesterday Tuesday) just about 6 o'clock I received a call from Gail
Benedict that
she was looking at a Scissor-Tailed flycatcher. She was in a small
cemetery in Pharsaalia.
Go to Lower Cincinnatus, take the Brackle Rd.(Rte. 23) towards Norwich
continue a few miles past The Brackle Bar Grill, the Pharsalia
Cemetery will be on the left.
The bird was very approachable mostly sitting on a wire fence on the
far side of the cemetery. Also there is a pair of Bluebirds using a box
in the back corner near where the Scissor-Tailed was hanging out. The
bird was still there when we left about 7:30 PM.

[cayugabirds-l] Clay-colored/Chipping Sparrows

2014-05-19 Thread Matthew A. Young
Hi all,

A couple days late to the discussion, but one of the two years Clay-colored
Sparrow showed up at the xmas tree plantation on Lick Street Summerhill, I
witnessed the bird copulating with a Chipping Sparrow. The other year it seemed
to be an unmated bird. I think they were present there in 2005 and again in
2011 or 2012.

cheers,

Matt Young

[cayugabirds-l] Courting Merlins in Dryden

2014-04-12 Thread Matthew A. Young
Hello all,

I stopped today at Bard Prentiss' in Dryden and observed a pair of courting
MERLINS. They were calling and wing fluttering as they kept flying back and
forth Rt 392 going in and out of a tall Norway spruce. As you come into the
4-corners in Dryden stay straight and birds can be heard a few houses up.

cheers,

Matt
