[cayugabirds-l] Birding this morning
Saw my FOY BROWN THRASHER singing heartily. Also my FOY HERMIT THRUSH. I also had a treat watching a BROWN CREEPER, both doing its thing (scooting up tree trunks) and singing. Lots of PURPLE FINCHES, lots of RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, and surprised and was surprised by (not sure who was more surprised!) by a RUFFED GROUSE. Only one YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER. Hoping I'm going to get some warblers before I leave for England (permanently) and will then have to make do with the drab little warblers over there. What a gorgeous morning! [cayugabirds-l] Lots of Purple Finches here too
This morning I went out birding the West side of our land at EcoVillage to see if any warblers have arrived. It was pretty nippy out so it was a relatively quiet start, but I was rewarded with 1 YELLOW WARBLER and 1 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER. Notable were quite a surprising number of singing PURPLE FINCHES, and both RUBY-CROWNED and GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS. [cayugabirds-l] App for European birds
Hi Linda I've just returned from one of my visits to England, and though I don't know of any apps for European birds, I use two apps specifically for British birds, many of which can be found on the European continent. Birds of Britain and Ireland Pro and Birds of Britain Pro. There's also another app from BirdGuides: Northern European Birds. But Europe is a big place bird-wise, better to get an app for the country you're visiting. Hope this helps. This evening as we drove by 100s of acres of weed-free corn soybean fields, I thought about seeing only one honey bee so far, no Monarch butterflies few of any kind of butterflies. Our yard is FULL of white clover which normally would be abuzz with honey bees. We still have mosquitoes black flies, insects that need water in which to lay eggs blood of warm blooded bodies on which to live ... water blood. They thrive. We scratch. Honey bees that pollinate 30 BILLON dollars worth of crops in the US are fast disappearing. Thanks to indiscriminate, as well as deliberate use of insecticides, weed killers fungicides by home owners, golf course owners, large small farmers, etc. the honey bee, the one little insect that determines what food crops we may still be able to grow may become in the same ranks as the carrier pigeon. Indeed, it may already be too late. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Sunday CBC Field Trip
You forgot the Carolina Wren singing to us at East Shore Park. Stephanie Greenwood Sent from my iPad On Dec 1, 2013, at 7:41 PM, bob mcguire bmcgu...@clarityconnect.com wrote: Seven folks joined me for a run up the east side of the lake today. It was warmer than any of the last few days, but with the south breeze off the water, it still felt cold. We began at Stewart Park, picking through the groups of waterfowl. Dave Nutter noted a Blue-winged Teal before we even got there - and we never did re-find it. In addition to the usuals, we spotted a distant female Red-breasted Merganser, 7 Scoters, most of which were White-winged, three Double-crested Cormorants on the jetty, the ongoing Ruddy Duck flock, and the beginnings of an aythya raft that seemed to consist solely of Redheads. We then got closer looks at the scoters from East Shore Park and then headed up to Myers, checking Drake and Portland Point Roads on the way. The Salt Point duck hunter was just packing up, leaving a large flock of Mallards safely offshore. While were scanning the lake a single American Pipit flew in the the spit, remained long enough for a couple of us to get looks, then flew off. The next stop was Center Road for great looks at a small Horned Lark/Snow Bunting flock, then on to Lake Road and Long Point SP. Nearly at the bottom of Lake Road we ran into a large flock of Robins/Starlings/Cedar Waxwings consuming cedar berries. Red-bellied Woodpeckers and a Northern Flicker called from the woods. And a pair of Yellow-rumped Warblers ignored us for the poison ivy berries right along the road. At Long Point we spotted a couple of Common Loons and one Horned Grebe, as well as a vocal Golden-crowned Kinglet foraging in one of the cedars. A digression here: the ground around the bathrooms was littered with hickory nuts - thousands. Where are the squirrels? From the Aurora boathouse we were able to find a total of eight Horned Grebes, couple of Loons, and several groups of Buffleheads. At the end of a distant line of Mallards were three Ring-necked Ducks and one more that, we finally concluded, must have been a Scaup-Ring-necked cross. The bird had a rounded head (lacking the crest at the back of a Ring-neck's head), a much paler and less-distinct white finger on the front of the flank, and an overall browner color of wing and body. We got as far as Union Springs before heading home. Factory Street pond was nearly empty, except for a single Green-winged Teal, a Mallard, several Gadwall, and two female Northern Pintail. One of the Pintails had a couple of unusual, diagonal, white stripes on the folded wing (on the right side only!). Mill Pond was unremarkable, with the resident Redhead and several Gadwall. Perhaps the best stop was our last, at Frontenac Park. Again, the duck hunters had just finished up so there was not much on the water - except for a couple more Horned Grebes, three distant Bonaparte's Gulls, and both male and female Norther Harriers flying down the lake towards Farley's Point. What were they doing out over the water? I took no notes and am writing this from memory. So chime in, anyone, and add to/correct my comments. [cayugabirds-l] Warbler surprise
Out walking with a friend this morning around about EcoVillage neighboring Plantation woodland, came across a bird party - lots of chickadees. So stopped to check it out in case any migrants were hanging out with them. I put my glasses onto what I thought was a chickadee or nuthatch and found myself looking at a BLACK WHITE WARBLER. Those must have been the ones I saw streaming BACK from the South heading North, definitely in the lake direction from here about 5pm. Don't know why they changed course and came back again. Weather? Wind? Lake? Stephanie On 12/27/12 9:25 PM, Kenneth Victor Rosenberg wrote: At dusk I stopped by Stewart park - the churning lakeshore was pretty bird less, but then I noticed the western sky filled with SNOW GEESE pouring in from the south. The skeins were flying north but drifting east over the lake, flying very strongly into the stiff wind. I'm sure I missed the beginning of this return flight, but I counted 5,300 birds. They seemed to be dropping onto the lake somewhere up near myer's. So it seems not all (any?) of the snows left the cayuga lake basin today. I was digging out my driveway at about 12:15 when I heard the Snows and saw them heading south. I wondered whether they were going to the corn fields because the Canadas fly in the same direction in the morning and back to the lake later in the day. When the good folks south of us started to report the flights, it was obvious the destination was not the corn fields, at least, not the local ones. I think the early reports started coming in about 12:30, just a few minutes after my first sightings. The timing and direction were perfect for an escape to the south. I think Geo's count was accurate. While I watched for just a few minutes, I saw perhaps 1000 to 2000 birds. I wonder what Geo's final tally was. Too bad the birds couldn't have waited until the census day next week. [cayugabirds-l] Cool hawk event
On the way to the Plantsmen's Garden Gathering event yesterday with friends who are visiting, just before we got there, I spotted either a Coopers or Sharpie coming from the right side of the road being chased by another small bird. As I slowed down it suddenly flew in front of the car and grabbed another small bird off the telephone/electric wires on the left side of the road and flew off with it in its claws. It was all incredibly fast, so no ID possible. But it was amazing to see! It was also amazing that I managed to keep the car on the road while watching! Re: [cayugabirds-l] Owasco Flats
Another great way to see/hear birds and lots of other wildlife is to kayak down the inlet through the nature reserve. Glorious! The closest thing to the Adirondacks I've found in the area. (And no muddy shoes!) Stephanie On 6/26/12 11:45 PM, Donna Scott wrote: On this lovely 70 degree day (Tues. 6/26). , I took a leisurely drive over hill and dale to Owasco Flats by NY Rt. 38 (#41 in our wonderful Cayuga Basin guidebook) and walked around the loop trail along the inlet stream and old RR bed Some parts were very wet muddy and I wore the wrong shoes, now also very muddy. I may also have poison ivy on my legs in a few days... The paths could use a little trim. While there is not too much PI right by the trail, I would recommend long pants, not shorts. It was peaceful and quiet by the inlet portion of the path, except for the faint traffic noise on Rt. 38. Luckily, some of the birds were not quiet and I heard and saw several VEERYS and GRAY CATBIRDS, and saw, of course heard, 2 BELTED KINGFISHERS. Heard the irregular knocking of a YELLOW BELLIED SAPSUCKER across the inlet, then saw one close by on my side. Kept hearing a GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER and saw a smaller flycatcher I could not identify. I learned the Sapsucker knock sound from Sandy Padulka, one of our field guides in the SFO class. She found just the right stick to bang on a tree to show us how it sounds! Saw a GREEN HERON flying away and a TURKEY VULTURE in the distance. Part way down the path, by the small bridge with railings (some torn off by vandals), I found a lovely wild Canada Lily in full bloom. Along the old RR part of the path, I heard a few birds I can't yet identify by sound, including one I have never heard: It called a plain sound - yurr or your with a faint buzzy undernote - called once with pauses in between calls. Can anybody tell me what bird this might be? I imitated it and the bird called back (I think), but wouldn't come to where I could see it. Did see a nice female AMERICAN REDSTART there, and heard what I thought was a RED EYED VIREO, and heard a WOOD THRUSH very close to me. On the gravel road part of the trail I saw a HOUSE SPARROW, an AMER. GOLDFINCH, AMER. ROBINS, NORTHERN FLICKERS, DOWNY WOODPECKER, an E. KINGBIRD, and a YELLOW WARBLER. Some RED WINGED BLACKBIRDS and C. GRACKLES flew out to the nearby marsh. Saw several CEDAR WAXWINGS and TREE SWALLOWS, including some babies lined up on a dead tree branch, opening their mouths in unison when a parent flew near. Over or on Owasco Lake were several BARN SWALLOWS, MALLARDS, and RING BILLED GULLS. On the drive over to Owasco through rural country, I saw a lot of birds including many, many BARN SWALLOWS - some sitting in the dirt and gravel on a dirt road, just sitting there, not bathing in the dust; several NO. MOCKINGBIRDS, an AMER. KESTREL, and an EASTERN BLUEBIRD; also, a BELTED KINGFISHER and a YELLOW WARBLER by a little stream. Lots of other common birds, as well. Kevin McGowan is right - there are lots of birds out there and this is a great part of the world - - rural NY in lush, green summer can't be beat! Now I need to try Fillmore Glen State Park, also described in #41. [cayugabirds-l] Hawthorne Orchard, etc
My morning began with no less than 10 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS in my yard, in the rain. But no hummers as yet :-( . So, don't let anyone ever tell you that you have to be at Hawthorne early! I had intended to be at Hawthorne at 7am, but wimped out due to rain. Then I couldn't stand missing all the fun and headed out a bit later when it was only lightly sprinkling. I was fully prepared to have blown it, but decided to just go anyway. So I didn't arrive at the site until 8:30am. WOW! to my surprise and delight it was busy busy busy. First I was greeted by a BALTIMORE ORIOLE, singing on the tree at the (SE?)entrance just like a gatekeeper. Then plunging in I found myself surrounded by numerous warblers. At one point I was standing in the center of a clearing and just kept turning around and around in a circle trying to see all of them until I just gave up, put down my binoculars, and stood blissed out listening to the 'surround sound'. I've never experienced anything like that before. I had most of the Warblers already reported, was amazed at the large number of NORTHERN PARULAS BLACKBURNIAN WARBLERS as well as my first ever really good look at both a TENNESSEE WARBLER and a PRAIRIE WARBLER. Didn't see or hear Blue-wing or Hooded which was reported earlier today. Also had three large flocks of CEDAR WAXWINGS. [cayugabirds-l] Nashville Warbler
Okay I know it's 'out of the Basin' but it's so close and it was so cool Im going to report it anyway: Jane Graves and I heard a Nashville Warbler yesterday morning while hiking in the Finger Lakes National Forest. We also both got the best ever look for both of us of a Broad-winged hawk (at the same spot as the Nashville) circling right above us calling loud and clear. It circled again and again and against the bright blue sky was breath-taking. All in all we had a very birdy, very enjoyable hike, with lots of butterflies as well. [cayugabirds-l] 5000 blackbirds and starlings fall from the sky!
I was just shocked when a friend I met for dinner this evening told me about this story. Have any of you heard about this? What I found even more shocking was the ornithologist from the Game and Fish commission saying 'the incident is not that unusual'. First I've heard of such a thing. I looked up the story on CNN and have copied it below. Stephanie *(CNN)* -- The thousands of birds that fell from the sky just before midnight New Year's Eve in Arkansas likely died from massive trauma, according to a preliminary report released Monday. The birds -- most of which were dead when they were found -- were red-winged blackbirds and starlings, and they were found within a one-mile area of Beebe, about 40 miles northeast of Little Rock, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission said. Keith Stephens, a spokesman for the commission, said the birds showed evidence of trauma in the breast tissue, with blood clots in the body cavity and a lot of internal bleeding. All major organs were normal. He cited a preliminary report conducted by the Arkansas Livestock and Poultry Commission. Further tests will be done to rule out other causes, but the birds suffered from acute physical trauma leading to internal hemorrhage and death. There was no sign of any chronic or infectious disease, the report said, according to the game and fish commission. As of Saturday, between 4,000 and 5,000 birds had been found dead, said Stephens. Karen Rowe, an ornithologist for the game and fish commission, said the incident is not that unusual and is often caused by a lightning strike or high-altitude hail. A strong storm system moved through the state earlier in the day Friday. Officials also speculated that fireworks shot by New Year's revelers in the area might have caused severe stress in the birds. It's completely indescribable how many birds were here. I've never been anything like it, said Melissa Weatherly, a Beebe resident. Blackbirds do not normally fly at night and it was not immediately clear what caused the odd behavior. Loud noises were reported shortly before the birds began falling, according to the game and fish commission. The birds obviously hit something very hard and had hemorrhages, said Rowe. Initial examinations of a few of the dead birds showed trauma. Whether or not this trauma was from the force of hitting the ground when they fell or from something that contacted them in the air, we don't know, she said. -- Stephanie Greenwood Ecovillage at Ithaca 221 Rachel Carson Way Ithaca, NY 14850 607 273 1179 607 280 1050 cell -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html 3) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
