The Blue Grosbeak that was in our yard for three days earlier in the week
didn’t reappear yesterday and hasn’t been seen yet today.  I suspect the
cold overnight temperatures forced it back south.

[cayugabirds-l] Blue Grosbeak in Lansing

[Tom Vawter]

A distinctly blue finch-like bird has been visiting my feeders here on Ross
Road in Lansing (42°34′5″ N 76°35′1″ W).  It seems larger than I remember
for buntings.  Merlin turns up nothing, neither Indigo Bunting or Blue
Grosbeak, the only possibilities I could think of.  The rusty wing bars
suggest Blue Grosbeak.

I saw an adult Red-headed Woodpecker in Sapsucker Woods this morning,
flying northeast over the Wilson Trail North. so perhaps your suspicions

another way to see these observations is to go to the Explore page on
eBird, then select Alerts, and look for eBird alerts for the relevant
region - the ABA area, state of Wisconsin, or whatever. this shows all
recent reports of eBird of rare species, regardless of whether the records
have been confirmed yet by an eBird reviewer. the key limitation here is
'recent', since this will show observations only from the past seven days -
but if what you are looking for is within this window, then this probably
is the most efficient way to tracking down observations of interest.

[cayugabirds-l] Prothonotary Warbler still at Stewart Park? - maybe!

this afternoon I kayaked around the south end of the lake, from Stewart
Park over to Hog Hole. shortly after putting in at Stewart Park, directly
across from the Cascadilla Boat House, I heard what sounded for all the
world like a Prothonotary Warbler singing. it wasn't singing much
(admittedly, it was mid afternoon), but I heard at least four short song
bouts. unfortunately I never saw it, partly because it sang relatively
infrequently (hence difficult to track), and also in part because it seemed
to be moving in the opposite direction from me (the bird was moving
upstream, whereas my kayak party was heading out), so I never got a visual
confirmation. frustrating! but I strongly suspect that there still is a
Prothonotary at the south end of Cayuga Lake, perhaps spending as much or
more time in East Jetty Woods as in Stewart Park.

Holly and I found a tiny sedge wren in a thicket in your back yard this
morning. It is quietly foraging giving us multiple great views.

Also, Chestnut Sided, B, yellow Warblers and common Yellowthroats.

Grosbeak and a couple of pine siskin joined today by FOY B. Oriole at my

[cayugabirds-l] Yellow Bellied Sapsucker Question

There seems to be numerous reports of sapsuckers in CNY this winter. In my
thirty plus years living here I don't recall ever seeing one in the winter.
Here in McGraw I have one visiting my feeders for the past few weeks. How
common is it for them to winter in our area?

[cayugabirds-l] Blue winged in brooktondale,

Having just returned from Orlando last night, I was excited to see our
migrating birds today.  A blue winged warbler popped into the yard along
with yellow and common yellowthroats. We are having a lot of orioles as I
have seen in friends facebook feeds and am happy to hear the white crowned
and field sparrows as well as bobolinks in the back fields.

[cayugabirds-l] Seasonal changes in goldfinch feeding

I’ve noticed that American Goldfinches this fall seem to be largely ignoring my 
thistle-seed feeder in favor of sunflower seeds, while in spring and early 
summer thistle seemed to be the favorite.

Has anyone else notes this pattern?

Thanks, Dave Nicosia, for doing a great job leading the walks, keeping eBird 
lists, and writing summaries! I have a few things to add. First, it made a big 
difference that the dike had been widely mowed for the Muckrace, so it was easy 
to view the impoundment. Not only could we watch from more places, but several 
people could stand next to each other without anyone’s view being blocked, and 
short people could just plain see, all of which had been difficult when the 
vegetation was tall everywhere along the dike. Thank-you, Refuge staff.Second, 
it was Ken & Adriaan who found the small passerine flock in the SE corner of 
the woods, including Magnolia Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, a Red-eyed Vireo 
which surprisingly made a couple of wide sweeping sallies out from the woods, 
Swamp Sparrow, Song Sparrow (all of which I saw), and Least Flycatcher (which I 
missed).Dave Nicosia listed a flyover Wilson’s Snipe, but from farther along 
the dike I managed to follow such a bird in my scope until it alit on the open 
mud, barely visible to me as I looked over an island of cattails. With several 
other folks, I walked on the dike past the cattails and proudly aimed my scope 
at the Snipe who was walking toward a sleeping Greater Yellowlegs and a 
preening Pectoral Sandpiper on either side of an inconsequential bit of weed 
stubble. The first person looking through my scope had a great view, but the 
second person couldn’t find the Snipe. I looked again, and neither could I. 
Then someone looking through another scope saw the Snipe’s head move in the 
weed stubble, and people again took turns watching. When I got my scope back, I 
watched the Snipe for awhile, too. Eventually I realized that I really could 
see most of the Snipe, but it matched the weed stubble in height, color, and 
pattern. This was a life bird for one of the people with me. Early in the walk 
I had fallen behind Dave Nicosia, and I saw 3 American Golden-Plovers flying 
back and forth over the marsh. They started low, but gradually gained altitude 
and eventually appeared to fly off toward the Wildlife Drive. At least 2 of 
them were adults in transition to winter plumage but still with considerable 
blotches of black below. Much later I found a single such bird walking on the 
mud, so I told people about it, and when I looked again, there were 3 plovers. 
Maybe they were the same birds that I saw depart a couple hours earlier, having 
determined that Knox-Marsellus had the best shorebird habitat around. Again 
people were interested in the subtleties of Stilt Sandpiper ID, so we worked on 
that while watching their distinctive vertical ramming feeding behavior among 
the more randomly pecking Greater & Lesser Yellowlegs. And I talked about 
Pectoral Sandpipers, whose color & pattern are similar to Least, but whose 
shape differs, the larger species having a proportionately smaller head with an 
actual neck showing at times (Least & Semipalmated Sandpipers look neck-less to 
me). And I talked about how to use color and shape and proportions in shorebird 
ID generally.On our way out onto the dikes we saw several Long-billed 
Dowitchers, whose immaculate juvenile plumage had a cold grayish-tan hue 
overall and whose tertials were plain gray with narrow pale edges. When I was 
leaving, walking slow and falling behind everyone else, I discovered a juvenile 
Short-billed Dowitcher which must have just arrived. It had a warm overall 
orange glow in the sunlight from the edging on all the back & wing feathers, 
including the tertials, which had additional orange bars. I wished

After a slow start the Baltimore Orioles are entertaining us at our feeders 
here in Lansing.  What appears to be 2 pair seem to prefer the hummingbird

Re:[cayugabirds-l] history of the Ithaca Christmas Bird Count

bits and pieces of the story are coming out, which is great, but I have a
few more questions:

1) does anyone know when Allen's New Year's Day count was initiated? it
takes traditions a while to become, well, traditions, but I'm curious to
know just how early this became a focus of local birding.

2) the CBC had its (modest) origins in 1900, which is to say, before there
could have been much in the way of birding traditions in Ithaca. and it was
the brainchild of Frank Chapman, who was well known both to Allen and
(especially) to Louis Agassiz Fuertes. but I've found no evidence that
either Allen or Fuertes ever experimented with the CBC, even as others
across upstate New York began trying out the CBC from very early on. am I
the only one who thinks there's something odd about this? there's no record
of Allen's or Fuertes's thoughts on Chapman's CBC scheme?

3) I appreciate all the background on the phaseout of the Basin-wide New
Year's Day count in favor of the Ithaca CBC. but what's still not clear to
me is, was it Allen's initiative to make this change? and if so, what lead
him to the (late) embrace of the CBC? or was this a bottom up process,
whereby local birders began pushing to participate in an activity that they
could see going on all around them?

I'm probably decades too late in asking these questions, but I'm going to
throw them out there anyway, just to stir the pot.

that answer may depend upon how you define a Christmas Bird Count. I don't
doubt that the modern Ithaca CBC dates from 1963. but - with the important
caveat that it took decades for the CBC to assume its current form, and
that early CBCs had few guidelines (and, typically, very few participants)
- there were a few earlier Christmas counts from the Ithaca area.

before 1963, there were several single observer CBCs from Ithaca that were
published in Bird-Lore and Audubon Magazine. the earliest I have found is
one by Francis Harper from December 1904, which was only the 5th year of
the Christmas Bird Count - a very early contribution.

the next one that I know of was in December 1914, by Ludlow Griscom (!),
who I believe at that time was a graduate student at Cornell. John P. Young
submitted an Ithaca CBC for December 1922. and J. Kenneth Terres submitted
four consecutive single observer CBCs from Ithaca, from December 1938 to
December 1941.

there also was a count submitted from Trumansburg in December 1915, which
as far as I know never was repeated.

I've long been surprised by the fact that Ithaca did not develop its CBC
until relatively late in the game. a possible clue comes from this tidbit
in Greg Butcher's and Kevin McGowan's 1995 paper (History of ornithology at
Cornell University):

"[Arthur A.] Allen started a number of birding traditions in the Cayuga
Lake basin, including a New Year's Day Count (split in 1963 to become three
Christmas Bird Counts) and a May Big Day count. On New Year's Day, the
Allens hosted a turkey dinner for all participants; on the May Big Day, the
Allens provided a breakfast at their home and a picnic dinner at Montezuma
National Wildlife Refuge".

does anyone know when this New Year's Day Count was established, and
why?aside from the handful of CBCs mentioned above, by the 1950s the
Christmas Bird Count really was catching on. Ithaca was surrounded by
communities that already were doing CBCs, such as Cortland, Watkins Glen,
Elmira, Binghamton, and Syracuse. what was the allure of the New Year's Day
Count? for me, of course with the benefit of hindsight, the Ithaca birding
community of the 1950s (and earlier?) seems to have been
uncharacteristically out of step with trending approaches to birding and
ornithology when it comes to their delayed adoption of the Christmas Bird
Count. I'd very interested to know if anyone has more information on this
period of Ithaca birding history.

There were about 100 Snow Geese in a field just north of Scipio Center in 
Cayuga Co. about noon on 29 Dec 2018.  Apparently Snow Geese got missed in the 
Christmas Count.

We had a first ever Black Throated Blue Warbler pass through our yard
today...perching and singing just above our deck.  Also, I just saw an
Indigo Bunting in the back yard; the first in a few years here at home in

[cayugabirds-l] Sora, Thomas Rd Brooktondale

Holly and I did a trip around the lake yesterday, but made our first stop
the pond on Thomas Rd off Rt 79.  We were able to hear the Sora that was
reported in ebird vocalizing off and on.  Lots of other great birds up the
east side of the lake and at Montezuma...glad to have the Seneca County Big
day report from Ken, Jay et al. to help us to know what to look for.

Re:[cayugabirds-l] Ed Hart's Obituary in Ithaca Journal

Being with Ed Hart just made you feel good.  What a wonderful man.  In the
mid '80s I ran a trail run on the FLT with him and a couple of dozen other
runners from Burdett to Ithaca called 'Ed's Ultra', named after him. We
stopped at lunchtime at the top of Connecticut Hill for a lunch arranged by
his wife Jocelyn.  In the years since it was always a pleasure to speak
with him as we occasionally crossed paths.  I'm very happy to have known
him, and saddened by his passing.

[cayugabirds-l] Nesting bluebirds

We finally have nesting bluebirds in a pair of back-to-back bird houses in our 
yard.  We've never been successful at getting nesting, 'though every year, some 
birds have in investigated our houses.

One of the 2 boxes has a confirmed adult and one egg.  The other had 3 young 
birds.  I didn't see an adult at that box, and chickadees had built nests in 
both houses earlier in the spring.  The nests in the 2 boxes looked similar, 
but it's possible only the one box has bluebirds.

Our pair of Baltimore orioles arrived 3 or 4 days ago.  I heard the male soon 
after they arrived, but only got a glimpse of him last evening.

Every year I struck by how difficult it can be to get sight of such a noisy, 
bright orange bird.

It was our first trip to Hawthorn this year and very worthwhile.  In
addition to Chris' list we heard a BLUE-WINGED WARBLER repeatedly in the NE
corner of the orchard before he arrived.  Also we say a GREEN HERON as we
arrived around 7AM.

 seeing high migrating Common Loons, with their distinctively direct and
 rubbery-winged flight).

Way outside the basin!

We've seen a total of 3 redpolls at our Lansing place, but as I type here in 
our camp near Old Forge, NY, I've counted no fewer than 15 right around the 
feeder.  That's my GBBC number, but they are so active they're hard to count.  
There may be twice that many in the trees nearby  around other corners of the 
camp.

 In the interests of being inclusive, it would be wonderful if more of us 
 could at least try to add in some kind of overall orienting reference in 
 either the subject line or body of the text, perhaps like just N of Ovid or 
 E Hill, Ithaca.  Many people already do this, of course; and thanks!  
 Perhaps mentioning the county might only be necessary when there is no nearby 
 large town?  (It would be great if there were a button or app that would 
 automatically spell out the location in the body of the text (instead of, or 
 in addition to, numerical coordinates))!  It should only take a few seconds 
 (not sure where it starts to get onerous--perhaps around 10 seconds?).  It 
 would be much appreciated and would help to make this list more 
 user-friendly for all!

The cold temperatures and deep snow have increased morning activity at our 
feeders, but the diversity has been restricted mostly to the usual suspects.  
The white-throats appeared a few days ago and the Carolina wren is new.  We are 
blessed with woodpeckers-many downies and red-bellied and occasional hairies.

The numbers represent the largest number of ea. sp. seen at one time.
