[cayugabirds-l] Common Nighthawk in Tburg

2024-05-30 Thread Alyssa Johnson
I had a new yard bird visit me last night! A COMMON NIGHTHAWK came swooping
in just before 9pm last night, 5/29/24. I associate them with open gravelly
lots or open ag fields, and I don't believe we have a gravelly lot near us.
We do have a small hay field next door, but the rest of the immediate land
is residential yards and forest. I'm not sure where it's been hanging out.
I couldn't make out any plumage features, just a silhouette. If you'd like
to see my erratic video footage that I used for ID confirmation, please
check out my video here: https://www.facebook.com/reel/2245574372448532
Note that parts of the video are edited and slowed down for ease of viewing
because they are QUICK birds to follow!

[cayugabirds-l] Common Nighthawk

2023-09-16 Thread bob mcguire
During our walk with the Cayuga Bird Club this morning, Ryan spotted what
turned out to be a COMMON NIGHTHAWK at the Salt Point Preserve. Perched in a
poplar, seen from this point: 42.539925, -76.547450

Since it is not technically a “rare” bird I did not post it to the local rare
bird alert, but wanted to get the word out, nevertheless. We were alerted to
its presence by the alarm calls of a group of birds - several warblers and
vireos.

That’s interesting. I was running on the East hill reg way and a quick check of
Merlin said it heard a Common Nighthawk. I did not hear that myself and it only
registered once. But just an additional bit of potential information.

above the base of the Sherwood Platform on the Wilson Trail North at
Sapsucker Woods this morning, just one branch back from where it was on

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Common Nighthawk in Collegetown?

2018-05-13 Thread Geo Kloppel
Hi Tom,

Very likely. The sound of Nighthawks over collegetown (and downtown Ithaca) is
a fond memory of summer from the sixties and seventies, when they still bred
here.

Migrants seem to linger here for a few days, just long enough to make me wonder
if they might take it up again some year.

[cayugabirds-l] Common Nighthawk, Bluegrass Lane

2016-08-17 Thread Jay McGowan
Brad Walker and I had a nice look at a low flyover COMMON NIGHTHAWK headed
west near the horse barns at Bluegrass Lane this evening at 7:36PM.

This morning I succeeded in my goal of finding a Cayuga County OLIVE-SIDED
FLYCATCHER, perched in the snags and spruces in the Dresser Road bog in
Summerhill.

I have been checking Myers Point regularly the last couple of weeks. Aside
from the occasional Least, Semipalmated, Solitary, and Lesser Yellowlegs,
it has been pretty quiet. Still no turnstones or Sanderlings there this
year that I have seen.

[cayugabirds-l] Common Nighthawk in Danby

2016-08-10 Thread Ethan Chaffee
Hi all,

My wife and I were wrapping up a game of disc golf when a Common Nighthawk
silently flew directly overhead, heading South. We were in the open field
right next to Dotson Park Trail road for any who want to try for it. First
sighted at around 8:35. We didn't see him again, but were only there for
another 5 or 10 minutes. (For those of you who don't know, the entrance to
the disc golf course is directly across from the Danby Town Hall... We were
just East of the Danby Community Church when he flew overhead.)

Thanks!

[cayugabirds-l] Common Nighthawk

This evening about 6:30, while working in my garden, I heard the call of
a Common Nighthawk among all the other birdsongs I was hearing. I quick
ran out onto the lawn and did manage to get a look at it. It was flying
east. Moving right along, and disappeared over the treetops. I did see
the white bars on the wings. A nice surprise.

[cayugabirds-l] Common Nighthawk on Inlet; Myers; add Canada Warbler at Sapsucker Woods

2013-05-22 Thread Stuart Krasnoff
I stopped at Myers this morning at ca. 0720h. I didn't see any migrant
shorebirds. An Osprey was on the snag at Salt Pt. and the expected residents
were about including both Common and Hooded Mergansers with brood.

I also want to add a vocal Canada Warbler to Mark and Tilden Chao's list from
this morning. Jesse Ross and I saw the bird in the buckthorns on the high end
of the pond leg of the Wilson North at about 0830.

Late yesterday I birded Inlet Rd. which should be pinned on the google map link
below. At about 1930h I saw a Common Nighthawk rock and roll up the inlet and
off to the southwest. I had another sighting far off to the south at about
2030h which I thought might have been the same bird I saw earlier. Seems like a
good spot to look for nighthawks .

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Common Nighthawk

2013-05-19 Thread Geo Kloppel
Yes. The date is perfect, any hour is possible, and the east hill location
seems natural to me - I will forever associate Nighthawks with the skies over
collegetown, 45 years ago when they still bred in Ithaca.

Probably a number of birders will be staking out the city this evening,
watching the parks, the flood control channel, etc.

Re:[cayugabirds-l] Common Nighthawk

2013-05-19 Thread John and Fritzie Blizzard
When we lived in Ith. '61-'71 we always enjoyed seeing hearing nighthawks
over Montgomery Ward other stores, incl. JC Penney at what is now the west
end of the Commons. We weren't often downtown at night between '71 '91
when we lived in Dryden nor have we been downtown at night except a very few
times since coming to Union Springs in '91.

We saw several nighthawks along Bundy Rd. in the daytime about 2002, a
surprise to me at the time. I don't recall the time of the yr. but it could
have been spring since we often went out to look at spring flowers. At that
time I didn't consider myself a birder ... just an observer.

[cayugabirds-l] Common Nighthawk, Stewart Park

2012-05-18 Thread Jay McGowan
Brad Walker, Livia Santana, Matt Medler, Emma Grieg, and I had a COMMON
NIGHTHAWK at Stewart Park last night around dusk (8:20?). Brad first
spotted it over Jetty Woods, and it eventually flew right over our heads on
the shore of Stewart Park and headed up towards Ithaca Heights.

This morning I drove around the Ithaca Airport. Nothing too exciting, but
lots of the expected species, including NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, BLUE-WINGED
WARBLER, BLACKPOLL WARBLER, TENNESSEE WARBLER, ALDER FLYCATCHER, WILLOW
FLYCATCHER, EASTERN TOWHEE, EASTERN MEADOWLARK, SAVANNAH SPARROW, and FIELD
SPARROW.

Here at Sapsucker Woods, I just saw and heard a singing WILLOW FLYCATCHER
near the platform at the Fuller Wetlands north of the building.

Cheers,
-Jay

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Common Nighthawk, Stewart Park

2012-05-18 Thread Dave Nutter
This evening Stuart Krasnoff, Gary Kohlenberg, and I spontaneously gathered by the Cascadilla Boathouse in Stewart Park at about 8:15pm. Around 8:30 Gary was the first to pick out a single COMMON NIGHTHAWK working its way north over Cayuga Inlet or Jetty Woods. It foraged over the vicinity of the lakeshore of Treman Marine Park for a minute or so before we lost it against West Hill, apparently headed north again. While not seeing any more nighthawks we amused ourselves by looking at the crescent of Venus through Stuart's scope.--Dave NutterOn May 18, 2012, at 10:06 AM, Jay McGowan jw...@cornell.edu wrote:Brad Walker, Livia Santana, Matt Medler, Emma Grieg, and I had a COMMON NIGHTHAWK at Stewart Park last night around dusk (8:20?). [cayugabirds-l] Common Nighthawk

2010-08-14 Thread Alm9413
Last evening at a friend's home on Yaple Road, a number of us witnessed a
Common Night hawk fly over us heading east. We watched it's flight pattern
until it vanished over the horizon.
Good birding,
Ann Mitchell
