[cayugabirds-l] New arrivals early AM 5/07/2019
Nexrad was right on this AM when we checked around the sanctuary and added Blackburnian. Black-throated Green and Bay Breasted Warblers as well as Red-eyed Vireo and an Eastern Wood Pewee. The quince are now in full bloom much to the delight of the Orioles that have ben here for several days and the hummer who finally arrived at noon. That brings the year list for the sanctuary to 93 species. -- John and Sue Gregoire Field Ornithologists Kestrel Haven Migration Observatory 5373 Fitzgerald Rd Burdett, NY 14818 42.443508000, -76.758202000 "Create and Conserve Habitat" -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] new arrivals FOY
This morning I was happy to welcome back two FOY Rose-breasted Grosbeaks and a singing Brown Thrasher to my yard West of Mecklenberg. Still hanging around are R.C.Kinglets and G.C.Kinglets, and a few more Purple Finches. Looks like I've got to stock up on sunflower seeds! [cayugabirds-l] New arrivals
As I pulled out of my garage, I spotted a Pine Warbler on my driveway right next to my car! It foraged in the gravel for a few more seconds and then flew up into the pines. I'm guessing it was a new arrival that was too hungry to be concerned about my moving car right next to it! A Chipping Sparrow was a new arrival in my yard this morning as well. I went to Goetchius Preserve in Caroline mid-morning where I found a Solitary Sandpiper, a Wilson's Snipe, and a Savannah Sparrow, along with a Barn Swallow and a Rough-winged mixed in with lots of Tree Swallows. Incidentally, there were no disemboweled toads on the dike earlier this morning, but at this moment I'm sitting at the breakfast table looking down toward the pond, and I can see three Crows hopping around in the grass down there, so I imagine they are starting the feast. -Geo Sent from my iPhone > On Apr 28, 2017, at 9:20 AM, Geo Kloppelwrote: > > Newly arrived in my West Danby yard this morning were Gray Catbird, > Chestnut-sided Warbler, > Nashville Warbler and Ovenbird. > > I usually wind up flushing the early morning ducks off my little pond before > I can get close, but this morning I got lucky with a pair of Wood Ducks, and > achieved a one-duck wide binocular field. > > After flushing them, I walked along the dike, counting the toads in the > water. Newly arrived in my West Danby yard this morning were Gray Catbird, Chestnut-sided Warbler, Nashville Warbler and Ovenbird. I usually wind up flushing the early morning ducks off my little pond before I can get close, but this morning I got lucky with a pair of Wood Ducks, and achieved a one-duck wide binocular field. [cayugabirds-l] new arrivals
Just now we had an amazing new visitor when an adult male CMWA(Cape May Warbler) landed on a feeder support ar and wondered what all these other birds were eating! Too bad we don't have meal worms. Yesterday afternoon Solitary Sandpiper came into a pond. That followed a morning of FOYs starting with a hummer at dawn and then Chestnut-sided, Western Palm, Ovenbird and a soaring adult Bald Eagle overhead! Great day that brought this year's yard list to 88. -- John and Sue Gregoire Field Ornithologists Kestrel Haven Avian Migration Observatory 5373 Fitzgerald Road Burdett,NY 14818-9626 N 42 26.611' W 76 45.492' Website: http://www.empacc.net/~kestrelhaven/ "Conserve and Create Habitat" -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[cayugabirds-l] New arrivals
I'm so glad I put out the feeders. The male Hummingbird is back. The Oriole has come to the jelly feeder repeatedly. On top of that, the House Wren just let loose with song. Three new arrivals in one day. I've got 5 White Crown Sparrows, but I think the White Throats and Juncos have left. I found a warbler out in my wild area foraging in the shrubs. I only know a few common warblers such as the Yellow and Yellowthroat which nest out back. I got some good images so I hope to figure out what it is. It's been a good birding day for me here at home. I do enjoy reading about everyone's new arrivals. [cayugabirds-l] new arrivals
Hi all, In addition to many warblers, new arrivals today included WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS at multiple locations, as well as influxes of RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS and YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS. Yesterday I found my first LINCOLN'S SPARROWS of the fall, first in the Freese Road gardens and then on Niemi Road. Lingering birds included a LEAST FLYCATCHER on Niemi and a GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER on Tareyton Drive in Northeast Ithaca yesterday. Livia and I had a fun morning on Saturday at Montezuma, not participating in the Muckrace but just birding around and watching the teams. Shorebirding was disappointing from Towpath, where VERY few birds were found. We did have a BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, but it was one of only eight individual shorebirds out on the flats. Eaton Marsh on the Wildlife Drive was better, with multiples of both dowitchers and a few peeps, the Visitor Center pools had three BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS and many Pectoral Sandpipers, and the south pond at the Montezuma Audubon Center proved the most productive of all, with 11 STILT SANDPIPERS, ~150 peeps, 30+ PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, and a LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER. We missed the Wilson's Phalarope reported by Meena's team. A highlight for the morning was the ROSS'S GOOSE on the lake south of Mud Lock, refound by Dave Nutter et. al. after a three-week absence. Distant photos here: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S25095439 All in all, we ended up (with a little effort at the end finding titmouse and some other overlooked species) with 100 species for the day, a far cry from the 100-on-Towpath I had a couple years ago on the Muckrace, but not too shabby for a casual morning. I look forward to hearing more details from the Muckrace, whether highlights or standings. I had my FOS White Crown Sparrow, female RB Grosbeak, and House Wren today. The White Crowns usually arrive when the Serviceberry blooms. They're not quite open yet, but close. [cayugabirds-l] New arrivals and photo information
We had a short banding morning before wind forced us to close. We had several hansome male Yellow Warblers and our first Chestnut-sided (a very bright male) and Eastern White-crowned Sparrows. Photos of the above will be on the khamolists...@yahoogroups.com soon. For historical photos such as the plumage variations we've been discussing, see our website. We have some of the red shaft pics as well as some very unique Cedar Waxwing tail band color variations/wax deposits. With only two people we often are too busy to take photos of anything but rarities. Nice to see spring and so many new birds.
