[cayugabirds-l] Towhee at feeders

2020-10-28 Thread Johnson, Alyssa
We have had an Eastern Towhee hanging out at our feeders for the last 2 days
here at the Montezuma Audubon Center in Savannah. Very cooperative to watch,
feeding on the ground!

Our facility IS open, by the way. If you visit Montezuma National Wildlife
Refuge, once you finish the wildlife drive, turn north (right) onto Route 89
and we are about a 12 minute drive right up 89. Open Tues-Sat, 10 am - 4 pm.
Restrooms are open, and we have about 2 miles of trails to enjoy!

Steve Kress, who lives in area IV of the Ithaca area Christmas bird count,
asked me to post the following about birds seen at his feeder today, Dec 29,
2017. The Towhee is now a count week bird, and we will try to get it on
January 1!

"In addition to an Eastern Towhee that has been around for the past week, we
also have white-throated, tree, junco, goldfinch and more- in these cold days

[cayugabirds-l] Towhee

2016-03-23 Thread Andrew David Miller
While walking the dogs late yesterday afternoon I explored the abandoned
stretch of Mineah Rd. off of Mt. Pleasant. At the far end of this stretch
where the road disappears into a thicket I found a single eastern towhee
accompanied by three fox sparrows and a couple of singing song sparrows.
Based on the habitat and the mild winter, it wouldn't surprise me if this was
an overwintering bird.

Cheers-

[cayugabirds-l] Towhee, grackles, peregrine

2012-03-08 Thread Susan Fast
Susie I walked along Salt Rd (Norway spruce area) this morning. Still
several dozen PINE SISKINS. Heard an E. TOWHEE. South of Rt. 90, also on
Salt Rd.. we came upon a field full of blackbirds. They covered half the
field, then flew up in an amoeba-like mass into the adjacent trees. Their
calls sounded like the roar of a swollen stream. We estimated 7000; about
98% GRACKLES.

We saw very little on George Rd. pond, but a PEREGRINE FALCON floated over.

Also in our travels we saw 2 GREAT BLUE HERONS, 2 WOODCHUCKS, and a singing
BROWN CREEPER.

At Dryden Lake, a man we met reported seeing an EAGLE and an OSPREY earlier
in the day. We saw them not.

It is rare but not totally unheard of. There are some Nov. Dec and Jan
ebird reports for them And yes, Towhees are in the sparrow family, so feed
on the ground. This is cool, do you have any idea if you are in the count
circle for the Christmas Bird Count. You can check that out on our bird
club website, cayugabirdclub.org. This would be a great bird to count for
this year (on Jan.1)

Enjoy

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Towhee

2011-12-18 Thread Kevin J. McGowan
Eastern Towhee is indeed an unusual bird around here at this time of the year.
It has been recorded on the Ithaca Christmas Count 17 of the last 48 years.
Rarely do we ever record more than one, although last year we had two. High
count was six in 1982.
