[cayugabirds-l] Wood Duck at Mud Lock

2024-01-13 Thread Dave Nutter
This afternoon (13 Jan) I found a gorgeous breeding plumage male Wood Duck,
apparently the first reported this year in the Cayuga Lake Basin. It was at Mud
Lock, which is the outlet of Cayuga Lake, which is a short distance southwest
of where NYS-90 crosses US-5 & NYS-20 by the Circle K gas & convenience store
close to the Montezuma NWR Visitor Center.

The Wood Duck was being very inconspicuous, feeding with a few Mallards among
bits of floating debris right next to the upstream end of the lock, and visible
from a gravel pull-off along River Road just north of the boat ramp. However,
when the ducks saw me fussing with my window-mounted telescope to take a
digi-scope photo, they swam out into the river, and the Wood Duck went all the
way to the other side, where it was actually more visible.

[cayugabirds-l] Wood Duck @ Sapsucker Woods

2015-12-27 Thread Suan Hsi Yong
On this morning's birdy walk (with the rain more bearable than I expected),
there was a male wood duck with two mallards at Fuller, seen close from the
Owens platform as it slinked behind the reeds. Plenty of activity from
jingling tree sparrows, courting mallards, complaining blue jays, made for
a pleasant walk. Beaver devastation continues throughout.

Thank you Linda Donna

I, too, have missed the reports. I do not have the time to scan both eBird
reports the list-serve but prefer the list postings. I realize many of those
who use eBird also probably do not have time to use the list-serve. BUT I TRULY
APPRECIATE every report, esp. those with all the little side comments. That's
what makes the club more like family, willing to share news special
highlights which can be very educational. Since I am a nature nut Steve
Fast's observations this a.m. were, to me, delightful. Thanks, Steve.

...I will post what I saw tonight out in the country in So. Cayuga County on
Genoa-Venice Townline Road ( the gravel part east of Rt. 34B): A lovely
Juvenile Wood Duck quietly swimming around in the somewhat-deep, slow-moving
creek that flows underneath the road there. I saw a Wood Duck house on a metal
pole, back in the trees on the opposite side of the road, so somebody out there
is caring for the Wood Ducks.
This little wetland area is crowded with beautiful, lush Joe Pye Weed flowers
and Goldenrods.

Also saw many barn and some tree swallows zooming back and forth all along my
leisurely rural route this evening.

[cayugabirds-l] Wood duck family (OOB?)

2010-05-08 Thread tess

Hi,

Was traveling between Interlaken and Lodi on Rte 96-A when a wood
duck family scurried across the highway, the tiny ducklings strung so
close together behind their mother that momentarily it looked like a
strange long-tailed wood duck! Traffic on both sides hit the brakes and
the family made it safely across. I neglected to see exactly where this
was, so not sure if this was in the basin or not, but it was definitely
very cute and seemed a bit early for wood ducklings - the ones on the
pond near our house are still courting.

Then later watched a definitely OOB Mourning Warbler closer to home,
a silent female that popped up in a pile of brush by the road while I
was looking at something else entirely. Lots of other warblers, vireos
migratory thrushes out and about as well. Beautiful day out there!

Alicia
