[cayugabirds-l] Egret - Saturday

2016-11-07 Thread tigger64
Close to sunset on Saturday a small white egret flew over the Mays Point
observing corral heading toward Wildlife Dr/Main Pool. I didn't see it until
it was far past and heading directly away and assume it was a Cattle Egret but
could not tell for sure. It might have come from the back of Tschache Pool or
other points north or northwest, which as far as I know the Cattle Egrets have
not been seen.

[cayugabirds-l] King Fisher and Turkey Vultures

2016-11-07 Thread Peter
While at Taughannock Falls State Park yesterday looking for migrating
loons I also happened upon a kingfisher patrolling the banks of
Taughannock Creek near its mouth. I then went up to the falls overlook
before I left for home only to be treated to 3 turkey vultures cruising
the area. I was at the bottom rail of the falls overlook and two sailed
by at eye level.

A cold and winding day was pushing up waves on the lake yet I was able
to see 5 loons (if I'm not counting the same one twice). Alas, it became
too cold so I left for warmer places.

2016-11-07 Thread M Miller
Drove around this morning, very few Canada Geese - no Greater-white Fronted
seen, but did have 1 Brant near the canal entrance/marina. A few ducks included
Mallard, Am Black, Scaup, Redhead, Bufflehead, & C. Mergansers. GBB Gulls have
started showing up also. A juvenile Bald Eagle was perched near the entrance of
the park.

RE: [cayugabirds-l] migrating crows

2016-11-07 Thread Kevin J. McGowan
Interesting report. American Crows are migrating right now, with lots of birds
coming through from Ontario and Quebec. They are daytime migrants. It can be
difficult to tell them from local roost movements, because migrants will stop
and forage a while in a field with locals before heading out again.

Oddly, perhaps, crows in eastern North America don't fly south, they fly
southwest. Some of our Ithaca-raised crows turn up in southwestern Pennsylvania
and West Virginia, and other that we have banded in Ithaca in winter turn up in
Montreal and Vermont.

Best,

Kevin

Subject: [cayugabirds-l] migrating crows

Today I saw something I don't recall seeing before. Many times I have seen
crows commuting - traveling away from a large roost early in the morning or
returning to the roost area in the afternoon. Today at 11am I saw a flock of
125 crows flying south high over the east end of Stewart Park. I suspect they
were migrating. This was not the time of day I that crows typically commute.
Their flight path was the same that I have seen used by migrating Blue Jays
earlier in the autumn when they follow the east side of the lake
south-southeast but then take a more accurate southerly course once they can do
so over without flying over the lake. They were taking some advantage of the
north-northwest wind, but when I saw them they were flying at an angle to it.
These crows were silent, but I assume they were American Crows because they
appeared similar to each other in size and I doubt we could assemble that many
Fish Crows here.
