Re: [OSL | CCIE_Voice] CCIE Lab Prep via VMware

2013-12-12 Thread wilson.samuel
Hi Kenneth,

I have used VMWare Workstation ver 8 ( I am not very sure what version I am
running for the last 1 year) but VMWare Workstation works fine, no issues at
all. However, there is one catch, and that is, one is at the mercy of the Host
OS's resource allocations (CPUs, Memory etc) and that tends to slow down the
installation in most of the times (I have an old Dual Xeon, 16 GB Mem with 500G
+ 1 TB HDD on which I run these beasts) the Host OS is Win XP 64 Bit and it
works, though I can run almost 5 VMs in parallel, it becomes slow, thanks to
the XP

BUT, just last sunday I saw my colleague running OS X on his Mac Pro Notebook,
with 4 VMs (with UC 7.0 Servers) and Call of Duty and 2 Windows Server 2003 VMs
without ANY hint of slowing down the system or turning it into an oven.

That experience makes me believe that, its much better to go for a Mac Pro (16
GB ver or whatever the max is allowed) and play whatever you like on it, with
the help of VMWare Fusion (thats what he is running).

I am pretty sure, this setup is worth it, if it works easy, because just 2 run
any machine with 2 CPUs (with Cooling and HDD incl) can make a good size hole
whenever the electricity bill comes due :-|

Let us know which road you are taking, I am almost certain to go with the Mac
Pro route.

If you're serious about studying, I would avoid the desktop version and go with
ESXi and a good, reliable machine. You'll be fighting fatigue, the labs and
learning new stuff, so adding troubleshooting a VMware Desktop issue will only
frustrate you unnecessarily.
I have 7961's and they were fine. I would recommend getting two 9900 series
phones if you can so you can simulate video. Trust me, having the phones,
gateways and switch will help a ton. Also, just find a 3750 switch and forget
the router switch-modules. It's much easier and you'll still learn the needed
commands. Just make sure you pay attention to the commands for those
switch-modules (for VLAN setup, etc.) when studying.

Anyone else, please feel free to comment.

Thanks Justin for the post.

I have had used the Dell Precision 390 with 16 G RAM, however the noise and the
power consumption is just bit crazy and the second most important aspect is
that, one can be mobile with Mac Pro, not a doable situation with fat cat
server.

Btw, have you already passed your Lab?

Subject: Re: [OSL | CCIE_Voice] CCIE Lab Prep via VMware

I have been using an older macbook pro with 16gb to run my vms on fusion. (I
was running the officially supported 8gb max up until 2 months ago when I got a
16gb kit on amazon for $150)

I use the physical ethernet port in bridged mode (ie no nat, vms have layer 2
access to the eth0 port) for all vms and have my physical switch (hq switch)
directly connected. All routers are behind the access switch and when I
practice lan qos I just use an unused switchport since my pc port is also my
server port.

On my mac I also have wifi enabled and that has a default route. The phys eth0
port has a static ip (same subnet as my vms) but NO default route. I use the
mac os x terminal app (think cmd prompt on a pc) to add static routes to all
vm/lab subnets to use the eth0 while general internet traffic uses wifi default
route. In this setup I *could* access gui from mac (ffox, safari, chrome) to
cucm but latley I have used an xp vm full screen on an external monitor for my
mock labs...to avoid nuances in my mac os x (non-ie browsers and terminal)
versus the win xp (ie and putty) when you sit the real lab.

If you're willing to spend the cash I highly recommend using hard phones (I
just use 7961) and your own switch and routers. The reason I used my laptop
rather than a beefy server was because I can take the vms with me anywhere and
practice the gui sections while at work or travelling. (I could also use
softphones to practice using only my laptop, just like some of the ipexpert bls
demo videos.) I think newer versions of fusion let you build a loopback
interface for the mac but I actually built an rj45 loopback plug for my
physical ethernet port (on a mac the static ip on the physical eth port is only
up when it is connected to a switch...or my loopback plug).

Regarding vm sizing, fusion (and the free vmware player for pc) does NOT allow
you to oversubscribe you ram. If you have 6 vms with 2gb vram each you must
have 6*2=12gb ram on the mac...right now I can run 6 vms all together:
-pub 1.5gb
-sub .75gb
-cuc 1gb
-ccx 2gb (it doesn't work right for me after change ram post install of app)
-cups 1gb
-win xp 2gb

When I had 8gb previously I could run them all but it was near 100% ram usage
on the mac and it slowed to a crawl so I would only run one of the apps (cuc,
ccx, or cups) at a time or even shutdown the sub if needed.

Bottom line is practice whatever way works for you within your budget. I
needed to be mobile so I used my laptop. If I had a dedicated rack and phones
at work I would have used a server there instead and just vpn/rdp while remote.

On windows laptop vmware player would be very similar - 8gb is do-able, but
16gb is ideal. I think the paid version of vmware workstation (under 100 I
think) may let you oversuvscribe ram. If using a random server with esxi (or
esxi on a vm inside fusion or player), you can oversubscribe ram but I wouldn't
recommend it. Either way you connect your esxi server or laptop to a physical
switch. Someone else suggested using the 3750 poe for all phones and skipping
the esw wic and nm modules-I agree those aren't anything fancy just use the
3750 and config site b and c as trunk ports instead if avvess ports.

Hope this helps...

-Justin

2011-07-25 Thread Wilson.Samuel
Hi,

With Voice Labs available across almost all the locations, I would prefer to go
by Vik's Advice of not booking the lab till the last 2 weeks, because almost
certainly every continent they have the lab available with in the span of a
week or two.

Even then, I am not sure if the CSCO would accept any cancelation or postponing
without forfeiting the fees

Did you have the MGCP control binded to the loopback or another interface? If
so, you have to remove the binding, register the gateway, and add the binding
back after the t1 is up.

If you run show isdn status you might see TE1 instead of
Multiple_Frame_Established.

Re: [OSL | CCIE_Voice] T1 Pri Issue

2011-01-07 Thread Wilson.Samuel
Didnt get a chance to visit the post yesterday.

Even I struggled with this, as a H.323 GW user (I got more hands on that), I
spent almost 2 days wondering why ISDN Multiple_Frames_Established wasn't
showing up, the moment I made the ISDN PRI Confg (just like in a normal PRI
Data).

But later understood that, CCM Backhaul means that L3 is backhauled to the CCM,
and unless the CCM has the MGCP GW registered the PRI L-3 will never show up
as Established.

Good that you got it resolved :)

Happy Labbing :)

The IOS needed for more than 8 users is I guess 12.4(13), but we have

However indeed there is a command for “ maximum conference-participants “ which

I believe you need a specific version of IOS to provide that functionality
(sorry, don't have it handy) and you also need to set max-participants 8 or 16,

It must be something really silly, that I'm missing it

I have already disabled CSA on the CUCM, anything else I missed?

Hi,

To setup TAPS it's very easy:
1- Enable TAPS service on the Publisher server
2- Enable BARS service on the publisher server
3- Activate auto registration on CUCM
4- Download the TAPS plugin and install it on UCCX server
5- Create an AAR script adn the trigger point to CUCM server.
6- Test call from CUCM to trigger number if it's OK
7- Create phones using BAT and check the option dummy mac-address
8- Upload the bat file (csv) using the Bulk Tool
9- connect a phone, wait for registration (automatic)
10- call the trigger for TAPS
11- the script will ask you to enter the new directory number , confirm
12- phone reload and UP Enjoy :)

Yes, I am referring to MRG that is there in the MRGL of the trunk.

Just check that you should not have a MTP allocated for that call from CCM to
CME.
You can verify by making a call and then check in RTMT that whether Transcoder
is being invoked or MTP.

IMHO,

The best way to read PDFs is to read on a computer (aka Laptop, Palmtop,
Tablet PC or Mac versions of the equivalent) and find yourself the most
portable one that suits you.

I guess the E-Readers (Kindle, Sony et al) are not that user friendly when it

However I'm keeping the Kindle because, all the newspaper and magazine

Personally, I wouldn't prefer to buy Apple products (sorry mates, after the
ebook price debate, I have lost respect for Mr. Jobs and APPL in general).

I would prefer them to develop it for Kindle and Sony E-Readers (I guess these
at the moment have the max. marketshare) also iPad comes at a very high price
and hasn't been even launched, though the demand seems to be looming.

I'm not sure if people have around 600 USD to buy E-readers just for the sake
of a reader and some computing, esp. when Mac OS challenged people like me have
remained loyal to Linux and Windows OS.

Again, it's the survival of the fittest, May the Best Product Win!!

[OSL | CCIE_Voice] CUCM 7.0 DHCP Server

2010-02-02 Thread Wilson.Samuel
Hi All,

I know this should be incredibly easy, however for some reason my brain is not

I have installed a CUCM 7.1 Pub (no Sub) and want to make it a DHCP Server (as
normally required by most of the labs), even after disabling the CSA, my phones
are not taking any IP Address from the CUCM DHCP Server.
Btw, the CUCM is on a VMWare VM and has a bridged network card with the host. I
can ping everything and everything is fine if I use my ASA as the DHCP.

However the moment I use the CUCM DHCP Server , the phones cant get IP Address
from it.

Thanks for your insight, I will look into it tonight. Seems that something
goofed up on the ASA configuration.
Btw, my ASA is 5505 the basic one with the switch port configuration, hence all
the ports are in the same VLAN (i.e. same security level) so I doubt there is
any ASA Logic involved in it. Yet since its something to do with VMWare and ASA

You should be able to see in the ASA if it receives the dhcp requests, if it
sends it out to the UCM and also if the UCM replies to the request. It was
quite a long time since I had anything to do with a ASA, but it has a sort of
sniffer capability built in to it and with that you should be able to get more
info about this problem.
I also think that the ASA switch ports shouldn't be looked at as normal
Catalyst switch, there are probably some difference in the behavior that you
are stumbling on that causes this.

Do you have helper addresses assigned? If you put a phone physically on the

Yesterday I look my first CCIE voice lab and although I do not have the

Without violating the NDA, I can say that the material presented in
IPexperts workbook is what you can expect on the lab.
Of course there are differences, but you can get the idea what to expect. So
when you practice IPexpert labs, make some additional modifications,
  different scenarios.
You can expect more/other items than presented in the IPexpert material.

  Yesterday I learned two things.

  - Make sure you fully understand the call routing concept especially calling
and called transformations and which way to choose to implement call
routing, where to apply modifications and so on.
  Further, practice, practice, practice.
You do not have the time thinking about how to solve the questions. When you
read the questions you should know immediately which way to choose.

Although already said many times. Read all exercises before you even start
with the lab. It will cost you some time, but if you are well prepared you
can make the lab in time.

I believe if you can make IPexpert labs within 6.5 to 7 hours, you really
  make a change to pass.
Last week I could do some of IPexperts labs just within 8 hours, others took
me more. So perhaps I have to admit that I was not complete ready yet.

  - time management, stay with you strategy, I broke my own strategy, spending
to much time for troubleshooting instead of going on. Depending on the lab
you may have to choose another strategy.
I still have to figure this out.

I'll hope for better results on the next attempt.

Re: [OSL | CCIE_Voice] OT: eReader for Cisco PDFs?

2010-01-29 Thread Wilson.Samuel
I have been considering to get a Kindle for sometime, however not sure how to
make the Cisco PDFs (SRND/Config Guide/Admin Guide et al), is it possible get
the Safaribooks also on Kindle?

Btw, I tried looking for the Cisco Press Library on Kindle, I couldn't locate
(must be my eyes are somewhere else than my brain) do you mind to send me a
link if you may?

Regards
Sam Wilson
