[ccp4bb] Prof. Jack Dunitz, 1923-2021

2021-09-14 Thread Aaron Finke
Dear all,

It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of Prof. Jack Dunitz at
the age of 98. Prof. Dunitz was a giant in the development of modern
crystallographic methods, most notably in the determination of the crystal
structure of ferrocene, confirming the “sandwich complex” nature of that
molecule and ushering in the field of organometallic chemistry. As a
crystallographer, mathematician, and chemist, Prof. Dunitz effectively bridged
the gap between crystallography and chemistry, inspiring chemists to exploit
the utility of the burgeoning field of crystallography. He was a professor at
ETH-Zurich for over 60 years, and even after his “retirement” in 1990,
dedicated his life to crystallographic research.

I have many fond memories of Prof. Dunitz from my time at ETH. Even at the age
of 91, he still came into the office at least three times a week to pursue
research programs; I am told he continued to come in regularly until Covid
forced the campus closed. His wit and curiosity never dulled, and was enamored
with new technologies that enabled various new forms of crystallographic
research. He owned an iPad before I ever did! As a postdoc doing
crystallography, Prof. Dunitz enjoyed calling me into his office, ostensibly to
help him use some feature of CCDC Mercury, but in reality to discuss some new
idea he had about crystal symmetry and exploiting it to gain some greater
understanding of coordination complexes. He was the kind of person who had
forgotten more chemistry than I will ever know, and these discussions were
always enlightening and entertaining, mixing new theory with the history of
crystallography, much of which he bore witness or contributed to. He will be
sorely missed.

If you would like to express your condolences, please use the following email
address: jack_condole...@ethz.ch

Center for Biomolecular Structure Lecture Series

Incorporating HT-SAXS into Structure-Driven Drug Discovery Pipelines

Abstract:

High-throughput (HT) methods for discovering single-target protein and nucleic
acid ligands are well established and routinely utilized for drug discovery.
Many critical biological outcomes, however, are mediated by multi-component
assemblies and dynamic macromolecular architectures. HT approaches to assess
and fine-tune ligand impact on such functional, dynamic systems remain
underdeveloped. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) provides an opportunity to
monitor changes to biomolecular architectures and assemblies under native
solution environments, enabling chemical screening and selection for specific
architectural states. I will discuss how we have incorporated time-resolved
HT-SAXS into a classic fragment screening pipeline and used this approach to
identify chemical allosteric effectors targeting functional architectures of
mitochondrial Apoptosis-Inducing Factor (AIF)

[ccp4bb] DLS/CCP4 data analysis workshop 2021

2021-09-14 Thread David Waterman
We are pleased to announce that the 8th joint Diamond-CCP4 Workshop on MX
data collection and structure solution is now open for applications.

Bringing together leading experts in the field of MX to teach best practice
in data collection and analysis, this course is aimed at PhD students,
postdocs and early career scientists who have a focus on structural biology.

The workshop will take place online via Zoom over the course of two full
weeks, plus a preparation day in advance of the workshop. It is essential
that applicants commit to attending the workshop in its entirety. Please
note below the workshop days and timings involved:

- Preparation day: Tuesday 23 November 2021
- Week 1: Monday 29 November to Friday 3 December 2021
- Week 2: Monday 6 December to Friday 10 December 2021
- The days will generally begin at 08:45 and will finish at 17:15 (UK time)

There is no fee to attend this online workshop, however attendance will be
subject to an application process and a letter of support from the
attendee's supervisor will be required. Both the application form and
supervisor's letter of support will need to be submitted by 17:00 (UK time)
on Friday 1 October 2021 (though see disclaimer below).

Some prior experience of crystallography and data collection is expected,
and those who already have an interesting project (crystals and possibly
previously collected datasets) will be given priority in selection.

- The course homepage: https://www.ccp4.ac.uk/schools/DLS-2021/
- Apply at the Diamond website:
https://www.diamond.ac.uk/Home/Events/2021/Diamond-CCP4-Data-Collection-and-Structure-Solution-Workshop-2021.html

*Disclaimer* Depending on the number of submissions we receive, we may need
to close applications earlier than the stated deadline to allow the
organisers time to process them. Applicants are therefore encouraged to
apply as soon as possible with all the required details requested,
including the letter of support. Incomplete applications will not be
processed.

[ccp4bb] Join the team at Einstein!

2021-09-14 Thread Jeffrey B Bonanno
Dear CCP4BB fellows:

Glycans/sugars are the third, and possibly the structurally most diverse, class
of biopolymers (next to nucleic acids and proteins). All metazoan cells carry
complex glycans on their cell surfaces that are essential for life. We are
using the binding patterns of specific immunoreagents (single chain variable
fragment antibodies, or scFvs, and nanobodies) against a class of structurally
highly diverse glycans called heparan sulfates as a way to characterize
('glycotype') mammalian cell types. Preliminary data suggests that this
approach allows classification and identification of new cell types as well as
differentiation between healthy and diseased cells. For this multidisciplinary,
collaborative project between the labs of Drs. Steven Almo, Hannes Bülow,
Ulrich Steidl & Deyou Zheng at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, we are
seeking a highly motivated postdoc who is interested in working at the
interface of protein engineering, structural biophysics and glycan biology to
study the logic of protein-sugar interactions of the heparan sulfate-specific
scFvs with their sugar binding partners. Prior experience in protein structural
biology is a plus but not required; interest in sugars and proteins is a must!
Candidates should send their research statement, CV, and the names and contact
information for three references to steve.almoeinsteinmed.org
