Cartridges are appox 4x4x1 and the tape appears to be half inch. Some
are in boxes marked "Cartridge Tape CT-130" All have labels indicated
they are Tandem Computers "Site Update Tapes" with 1988, 89, and 90
dates. Cursory google produced nothing. Secondary label on one
cartridge would seem to indicate they are used for software
distribution.

I have an autoloader SCSI tape drive and two sample tapes which I am told came
from a Tandem system. The label on one of the tapes says:

"3M Royal Guard tm 1/2" tape cartridge 3480 compatible"

That's great!!, I'll get back to you directly.

I do have both SimH and Charon running but before I can think about
netbooting I will have to find a way to connect the 3100 to the network!
Thinnet only ATM as I don't know how to connect to the AUI yet.

The only other format I know of that era that comes close is IBM 3480, but

Robert,
If you have a thinet/cheaper connection via say a hub with thin-net and
10BaseT to your network that's just fine. The AUI port won't go any faster.
If you don't then I have one of these on my VAX3100

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/152740485013

(well I am pretty sure its one of those. I am in Spain at present and can't
check) which just goes straight into a normal switch/hub..

Yes, thanks, the archive.org copy has yielded a few bits but is lacking
some of the files such as the regenerated schematics and some others.
Unfortunately when it isn't a straight download link but some cgi/script

C64 to a good home

2017-10-15 Thread Kevin Parker via cctalk
Hi guys – quick story…

Have a good friend who is building a new house.
Includes a games room.
Trying to think of a house warming present.
He makes up and displays of old and new stuff and is talking about having a C64
and a PC together.
I take a hint and figure I’ll refurbish a C64 (of which I have a few just lying
around - seriously) for his games room as a house
warming present.
It will be going to a good home.
I think I’ve got a big box of C64 software on 5 ¼” but it turn out to be
TI99/4A software.
Ooops!

There are some online repositories of C64 software. Having only a little
knowledge when it comes to C64’s how do I get a C64 disk
image onto a 5 1/4” floppy?

Thanks guys

Hi,

Just to spread the word: there will be a Vintage Computer Festival in
Switzerland again this year. There will be rather a lot of minicomputing
goodness as well. Like last year, it'll be in Zurich's Rote Fabrik cultural
center, at the shore of Lake Zurich.

Here's an impression of last year's event, but you might want to press the mute
button first:
https://youtu.be/yyTZtli-mlc?t=12

There's a nice line-up of exhibits and presentations. But we have space, so
please let us know if you want to add an exhibit.
All details including the programme of currently confirmed
exhibits/presentations/activities are on www.vcfe.ch .

Kind regards,

Oscar.

Re: The SPERRY UNIVAC UTS 40 system + 8406 double-sided diskette subsystem : Restoration

2017-10-15 Thread Dominique Carlier via cctalk

Hi everybody,

As I have no documentation / schematics I started to look for computer
schematics where it is about Z80 and “serial I/O channel B”, I found a
lot of data about this subject that I do not know at all.
These information would allow me to better target the breakdown, if any
of you would consent to pass on some of his knowledge.
In all documentation on Z80 based machines, I find the same elements,
similar architectures: CPU, PIO, CTC, SIO.

http://www.z80.info/gfx/nascom1main.gif
http://www.ep128.hu/Sp_Konyv/Pic/SIO_11.gif

I interchanged with the IC of my other CPU board which are of the same
model.

http://www.zeltrax.com/classiccmp_forum/sio_issue_01.jpg

But the error persists, so the problem is around.
I'm trying to find out why the SIO detects a problem on the channel B.
How does this detection system work? What are the solicited ICs? Do they
communicate through other ICs like multiplexers or others?

I would also like to simulate the absence of this problem in order to
see if this allows my UTS to have a successful POC test, to have again
access to the setup page of the machine.
Is it possible to do something at the SIO pin 30 (W/RDYB) to pretend
that the B channel is OK?

http://www.sbprojects.net/projects/izabella/assets/images/sio1.jpg

Can we imagine that the problem would be at the level of what checks
channel B and not channel B itself?
I also read a lot of obscure thing about memory, and I still wonder if a
memory problem could also play a part in this failure? You must
understand that I continue to try to troubleshoot this machine like the
others, comparative logic without advanced academic knowledge, a
challenge every time.

It's even harder because I have trouble identifying the components. I do
not find any results concerning the 3/4 of the ICs, as for example these:

http://www.zeltrax.com/classiccmp_forum/sio_issue_02.jpg

And even for components like this, "AVX 224Z 8238"
http://www.zeltrax.com/classiccmp_forum/sio_issue_03.jpg

(ceramic capacitor of 220nf 50v? not sure)

There is also the fact that the tracks are not visible on the CPU board
which I try to repair, so I try to locate myself by comparing component
location to the original CPU board, in short a beautiful mess.
Meanwhile, I restore this beautiful Key Tronics keyboard which was in a
very sad condition. Here are some pictures of this restoration (work in
progress)

http://www.zeltrax.com/classiccmp_forum/keyboard2_02.jpg

http://www.zeltrax.com/classiccmp_forum/keyboard2_06.jpg

http://www.zeltrax.com/classiccmp_forum/keyboard2_07.jpg

In any case I hold on, restarting this machine has become an obsession,
but without help I will still be on it for the next 10 years, thus
HELP! ;-)

Everything would be perfectly fine if most of the time I did not have
at startup an error at line 9. of the POC test:

SERIAL I / O CHANNEL B: FAILED

I use a ZoomFloppy and a real 1541 (actually a 1571). These devices are
available from many places; Jim Brain built mine, or you can look for any
xu1541 or xum1541-type device and use OpenCBM to copy that floppy.

There are numerous ways.

You can cable a Commodore drive to a PC!
Some of the after-market drives had a full IEE-488 interface, and could be
connected to an IEE488 board on a PC. The IEC? port of the stock drives
is a specialized serial interface. With special cable and software, it
can be cabled to a PC parallel port. Look for "X1541"

In theory, it should be possible with a flux-transition board, such as
Kryoflux or Catweasel. I assume that somebody will have written
appropriate software for that by now, but I don't know.

It is even possible to connect a C64 to the internet! You'll need a
little extra hardware.

The Commodore 128 (with 1571 drive, instead of 1541) had the capability of
reading and writing MFM (instead of GCR) disks! With appropriate
software, it "should be able" to read/write PC disks. It apparently came
with software to read/write a few CP/M formats - Kaypro, CP/M86?,
Osborne?, Epson QX-10?

I'm sending (in a separate, direct message with attachment) the semi-famous /
once ubiquitous Space Shuttle plot from the 1980s.

I received it from someone after making a similar request to the list 10 years
ago.

Some things to note though: this plot uses multiple colored pens and was scaled
to some (largish, IIRC) size of paper.
I was targetting a HP 9872 plotter which was too early to understand some of
the more complex HPGL directives present in the SS plot, such as drawing arcs.
I wrote a language filter/converter that will optionally scale the image,
offset it relative to the plotter bed, converts certain directives e.g. arcs to
a series of line-segment directives, reduces the number of pens, etc.

I'll send the original SS plot, if you figure you could use the filter program,
I can send it along, or a modified plot, upon request.
