Re: [cellml-discussion] Schematic diagram

2010-10-13 Thread David Nickerson
Hi Felix,

The diagrams in the repository are all drawn by hand - using Adobe
Illustrator, I think. The source format is SVG and I think there is a
collection of template objects that are used to create the diagrams
which should be available. Perhaps Dougal might be able to help if
that might be useful for you...

Cheers,
Andre.

Re: [cellml-discussion] Schematic diagram

2010-10-13 Thread Catherine Lloyd

Hi Felix

Following up on what Andre wrote, I can confirm the diagrams are drawn
by hand using Adobe Illustrator. The original files are .ai (from
Adobe Illustrator) and they are converted to .png (for the website)
and .svg (for the OpenCell session files).

We have a library of glyphs which can be downloaded for free from the
model repository:

http://models.cellml.org/workspace/sessionresources/

You need to click on manifest for the latest addition to the folder
and you can download the glyphs from there.

Please let us know if you have any further questions (either
concerning the images or CellML itself). One final thought - you need
a licence to use Adobe Illustrator. I think there are alternative
free software you can use (maybe Innkscape?). Again Dougal can
confirm this.

Thanks for your interest in CellML.

Best wishes
Catherine

Hi Adam

Thanks for this useful feedback. I'll ask Hanne to upload .svg
versions of the glyphs as soon as she has some time.

Best wishes
Catherine

Hi Felix and Catherine

I've used Inkscape a lot and it's great. It doesn't support the Adobe
Illustrator file format very well though, I tried opening the glyph
library in Inkscape and I only got part of a cell membrane. It would
be nice if the glyph library was also available in SVG format for
people without access to Adobe Illustrator.

Thanks,

Adam

The latest glyph library is the one simply called Diagram Library.ai.
The older ones with dates included in the file names were around before
the library made it into Mercurial.

Inkscape can certainly be used to create these diagrams, and I will put
a copy of the library into the workspace in SVG format to make this easier.

Inkscape has historically been avoided for a couple of reasons.
Inkscape's SVG output is more difficult to work with when creating
interactive session files, and it is more laborious to add the ID tags
to the SVG using Inkscape than it is with Illustrator. Inkscape also
expands simple gradients out into a large number of objects, making the
SVG files much bigger than they need to be. If the diagrams are not
being used to make OpenCell SVG sessions, then these problems are not
relevant.

Cheers,
Dougal

I have now uploaded an SVG version of the diagram library to the workspace.

http://models.cellml.org/workspace/sessionresources

The Illustrator library will probably remain the most up-to-date one, as
all of the SVG session editing is still done in Illustrator. We will
endeavor to update the SVG version every time changes are made to the
library!

Dougal
