Re: [CentOS] CentOS 7.3

2021-03-19 Thread Mark Woolfson
Hello,
I have solved the problem but I don't know why it now works.
If I boot the 7.3 USB Key, go to troubleshoot then select installation with
basic graphics it all works.
I can then boot the system disk and set up the full graphics.
As an experiment I tried both 7.2 and 7.4. The above rules apply to 7.2.
With 7.4 it works with no problems.
To tidy up the boot process 'irqpoll' needs to be included in the boot
command line/grub.
Thank you for all your suggestions.
Mark

I know this comes up on the list quite often, but if you want security
updates for 7.3, you're going to end up with 7.9 + patches, so why are
you making your life difficult and installing such an old release?

If a vendor is telling you that you have to run a particular version,

has a lot of glaring vulnerabilities in it that are readily
exploitable.

Is this an AMD system? I remember such a message somehow but don't know

Can it be that the system is newer than what was supported with CentOS 7.3?

What kind of server? This is a hardware issue and is going to need to know
what kind of CPU and what the firmware on the system is. My uninformed
guess is that the kernel is finding a large number of CPUs (either virtual
or real) and it is probably only fixed by the kernel/software in 7.4. [A
test would be to see if 7.2 also has this issue and if not then walk
through the kernels until it does.. then look at the change logs for when
it starts working again.]

Or I would try installing with a smaller number of CPUs with a command line
entry like

maxcpus=16 (if this system has 82+?)

Re: [CentOS] CentOS 7.3

2021-03-18 Thread Mark Woolfson
Hello,

I wonder if you could help.

I have a requirement to load CentOS 7.3 on to a server. I have the
distribution on a bootable USB key.

CentOS boots to the first menu but when I select the option to install
almost immediately I get the error below:

NMI watchdog: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#82 stuck for 23s! [system-udevd:1221]

The above error is output every 23s

This is a repeatable error condition.

When I load CentOS 7.4 on to the server I get no problems.

When I load the above CentOS 7.3 distribution on to an older server I get no
problems.

Has anyone every seen the NMI watchdog error and found a resolution.

Thank you in advance,

Mark

What I did on couple of my CentOS boxes is:
- use a bridge which is connected to the specific nic(will always look as up
after boot)
- Run a cron script that checks if the nic state is "NO-CARRIER" or other
weird situations like no IP address and try to run ifdown X-nic and then
ifup X-nic.

Depends on the hardware and situation you might need to choose what fits
youe environment as a solution instead of fixing the whole CentOS distro.

Subject: [CentOS] CentOS 7.3 and e1000e

Hi All - I have a box running the above. Power was lost long enough that
UPS did not work. When power came back on the C7 box boots way faster than
the switch and resulted in no network. power cycling the C7 box resulted in
network.

This even happened a second time. The only way to get the box back was to
power cycle. the box is remote and no keyboard and mouse connected.

Any thoughts on why the e1000e would not talk to the switch ? The switch is
an unmanaged linksys - could not get the model. It auto negotiates to
1G/full.

Thanks, for any thoughts.

+1 on the switch not being completely up itself.

You could also stick in a (longer) pause at the boot screen.

Cheers!

This may be the wrong approach, but install the
NetworkManager-config-server rpm. It sets a config option to allow
interfaces to be configured before being available, which may help.

Had you used NetworkManager, it would have detected the network coming up and
started networking. This is one of the reasons why I continue to use NM for
our servers, I’ve been in similar situations (where power is restored to the
rack with computers in it before to the rack with the networking equipment).
The ‘network’ sysv service just runs once and gives up if it can’t bring up the
network.

The problem with LINKDELAY= is that it will always slow down the network
service (even if the network is fine), and if you set it too high, might cause
other services which rely on it to time out.

an unmanaged switch should be live within milliseconds of power being
applied, it doesn't make sense that an OS could boot up before its working.
