[KCFusion] CF5 Installation problems

2001-07-09 Thread Ramphal, Ron

Hello,

I recently downloaded the CF5 upgrade, however the install fails every
time, I get as far as the dialog box indicating that a previous version
has been found which can be migrated, once I click OK it never goes any
further, in task manager (NT4 SP6a by the way) it indicates the install
app is running...

Anyone else seen this?
Any ideas?

Thanks,
Ron.

I have to admit as soon as I installed CF 5 I started right in on the user
defined functions. I didn't much care for the approach of cfincluding
functions at the top of the page so I came up with a way to load all the
function for an application once per the life of the application. I would be
happy to share my techniques with any of you.

2001-07-09 Thread Brandt, Lee

In this spirit, I started off as a CF developer and now do mostly ASP, VB,
SQL Development. I really like CF, and I still use it occasionally for side
projects, and am trying to keep up with it so that my skills don't get
stale, but I just don't use it very much in my current job anymore.

I AM however, teaching myself JSP and one thing that keeps popping up is
that JRUN is one of the more popular JSP Engines. When I tried to download
it and intall it it seemed to install fine, but then none of my webs on my
local machine worked. The PHP, ASP, CF, JSP AND EVEN MY HTML pages all
returned the same error. (I don't recall exactly what it was now) so I
quickly uninstalled it from my machine so that I could continue with the
ASP, PHP and CF development. I downloaded the Free Developer edition of the
JRUN 3.1 Server. Running on Win 2K Pro SP1 and IIS 5. Am I missing
something? or perhaps I just don't know enough about it to set it up
correctly.

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: [KCFusion] Meeting

2001-07-09 Thread Bryan LaPlante

One thing that is true about Kansas city is that we are a head quarter town.
Companies here are under a great deal of pressure to keep up with current
technology and Java seems to be the choice for building new systems or
upgrading legacy systems. Cold Fusion does not have as many customers here
as they do in Dallas, Chicago, St. Louis and other similar sized towns. That
is why I say let's talk about what every we want to but still give all the
support to our CF developers that they need.

I like your idea about getting paid to go to the meetings. There has been
some talk at Macromedia about a new form of user group that exists inside
the walls of a company. As more information develops on the resources that
will be available to a company that wants to start such a group I will
forward that information to the group.

| Bryan,
|
| I'm a lurker/occasional poster, and except for the Forta visit, I haven't
| attended any of the meetings. There are two recognized values of meeting
| with a professional group. One is for profession-specific enrichment. The
| other is for networking.
|
| Could it be that the CF Developers in this area have access to ample
| resources already, and so they are not seeking out new resources (such as
| attending KCFusion meetings)? I'm not sure that anyone can ever do 'too
| much' networking, but people may not value the networking potential of the
| KCFusion meetings enough to take an entire evening out of their schedule.
|
| So that I don't offer critique without some constructive suggestion,
here's
| my thought. I would be more inclined to attend an afternoon meeting. I
would
| receive the double-benefit of being on 'company-time' and also be
developing
| my skills and networking with other professionals.
|
| Generally speaking, organizations increase participation by lowering costs
| and/or increasing benefits. I propose that KCFusion reduce what it would
| 'cost' me to attend by moving the meeting to an afternoon time slot.

2001-07-09 Thread Daryl Banttari

Looks like I'll be in town tomorrow night. If anyone wants me to speak on
any subject they think I might know something about, I'll be happy to give
it a shot.

Otherwise, I have written a couple of things lately that might be of
interest:
* A wrapper for GPG so that you can do PGP encryption from within CF without
paying NAI's exorbidant server licensing fees.
* A program that will seek out queries that can be parameterized, and
automagically edit them to use cfqueryparam.
* Use of cfflush to keep a browser's attention during a CF-based flat file
import. Also, notes on how to accomplish that sort of thing (since list
functions tend to behave badly in that context.)

That happened to me too. Did you run it under NT4 IIS4. The problem has to
do with the connector interface and where it registered the isapi.dll.

2001-07-09 Thread Keith Purtell

The only reason I'm not at more meetings is that I'm buried in work. My most
consistent participation in any technical/professional group is via email
list, for the aforementioned reason. I can't think of a flaw in how KC
Fusion is set up, but many of the presentations seem too advanced. Talk
about Java Beans, C+, VB, etc. goes right over my head. It's kind of a
bummer to be sitting there just looking polite/interested until the meeting
is over.

Oh, and there's no way I could make it to an afternoon meeting.

[KCFusion] Response to Mark's questions

2001-07-09 Thread Ryan Hartwich

I don't recall there being any meeting in the last 2 weeks???

The last one I attended was the Cost Xpert one where Girish discussed how to
analyze project costs (estimation) and used CostXpert.com's software as a
brief example.

#1 - Bryan will have to answer #1 (archive)

#2 - I have broached the subject of a listing of members and we can discuss
this again tomorrow if people are interested.
Kory from Sprint would like to create a Sprint specific listing, and I would
like to see a comprehensive listing of members and local companies that use
CF.

#3 - Classroom like discussion/learning might be beneficial. How about we
run it for 1/2 of the meeting time so that other topics can be covered? We
could cover 1-2 main functions or topics in the classroom setting per
meeting.

#4 - Daytime meetings - my preference would be for evening time. If your
manager supports you (which mine do not), you could leave early on the day
of the meeting (or sleep in late). For the rest of us, driving to the Plaza
and back to work during the business day is not practical for a 1-2 hour
meeting. It also limits our flexibility to have longer meetings. I have
not been able to participate in some of the evening 'socializing' events
afterwards, but occasionally people go out for a drink and continue their
networking afterwards.

I'm glad to see more people responding to Bryan's encouragement email!

|
|
|
|

|
| I see that Ryan has been trying to get some response from the group about
| what your interests are. I have been involved with this group for about a
| year now and I have noticed that we are a very quiet group. I don't know
if
| that means that we are all CF guru's or if it means that the majority of
our
| day is spent dealing with other technologies that consume our time and
| interests. I remember when I first started in IT my first language was
Java.
| I was about to jump off the nearest cliff for the lack of resources that
| were available to me. After getting a handle on Internet technologies I
| wanted to help others get through the experience of learning a new
language.
|
| There are about 10 core people that are always ready to help others in
this
| group and I bet they had a similar experience to mine when they were
| starting out. It would be kind of nice if we could all respond to them
when
| they ask us if there is anything we would like to talk about. I am not
| complaining about meeting attendance or the lack of speakers but in the
| spirit of the way Ron Hornbaker started this group we should be free to
talk
| about any kind of technology that a CF developer is faced with.
|
| Any one that wants to give a presentation or suggest a focus for a meeting
| all you have to do is email one of the directors and we will give you any
| help you need to find answers to your issues. If any of us would do that
| then once a month there would be some idea of common

RE: Re: [KCFusion] Response to Mark's questions

2001-07-09 Thread mark . e . boles

Just to make sure... I am not being critical, I am trying to be
constructive.

I meant the 12th of June. It was my birthday, I was 15minutes late and
all 3 doors I checked were locked. (front back and side). I had really
wanted to see Girish's presentation.

Subject: [KCFusion] Response to Mark's questions

| I don't recall there being any meeting in the last 2 weeks???
|
| The last one I attended was the Cost Xpert one where Girish discussed
how
to
| analyze project costs (estimation) and used CostXpert.com's software
as a
| brief example.
|
| #1 - Bryan will have to answer #1 (archive)
|
| #2 - I have broached the subject of a listing of members and we can
discuss
| this again tomorrow if people are interested.
| Kory from Sprint would like to create a Sprint specific listing, and I
would
| like to see a comprehensive listing of members and local companies
that
use
| CF.
|
| #3 - Classroom like discussion/learning might be beneficial. How
about we
| run it for 1/2 of the meeting time so that other topics can be
covered?
We
| could cover 1-2 main functions or topics in the classroom setting per
| meeting.
|
| #4 - Daytime meetings - my preference would be for evening time. If
your
| manager supports you (which mine do not), you could leave early on the
day
| of the meeting (or sleep in late). For the rest of us, driving to the
Plaza
| and back to work during the business day is not practical for a 1-2
hour
| meeting. It also limits our flexibility to have longer meetings. I
have
| not been able to participate in some of the evening 'socializing'
events
| afterwards, but occasionally people go out for a drink and continue
their
| networking afterwards.
|
| I'm glad to see more people responding to Bryan's encouragement email!
|
| Ryan
