RE: Best practice question?
Jared is correct, Scoping improves performance and avoids ambiguity (ref CFMX study guide), and this makes sense. If you aren't going to scope, then you are decreasing performance and increasing ambiguity. So the best practice is to scope. In an application, based on the needs, you may consider not scoping, but it is that level that is application specific. The broad question of is scoping a best practice, I would answer with a 'yes'. - Calvin -Original Message- From: Jared Rypka-Hauer - CMG, LLC [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, March 27, 2005 1:41 PM To: CF-Talk Subject: Re: Best practice question? But it IS a broad application-development question! You can't decide *not* to scope a variable until you know *why* you would scope one to begin with. You can't decide to rely on CF's default scoping capabilities successfully until you know all the implications of them. It is a broad app-dev question because the decision to use a particular technique must be founded in good app-dev skills. There's no getting around that. Explicit scoping _IS_always_ the best idea, unless you have a compelling rationale to break with the best practice. New Hotfixes - Apply if you have IIS Issues
All, Apologies if you all know of these but At last (and after months of denying via support that something was wrong *) - two Hotfixes were recently released which fix a whole host of issues with CFMX and IIS (plus other unrelated to IIS problems). ColdFusion MX 6.1 Updater: Hot Fix to upgrade web server connectors http://www.macromedia.com/go/238944b1 Hot fix for JRun 4.0 and JRun 4.0-based servers (applies to all versions of CFMX) http://www.macromedia.com/go/f7736ad Anyone who has had problems with hanging sites on IIS - should apply these. * I said that they ignored the problems as we had the problems last year (we discovered a memory leak with IIS and CFMX) and the standard tech support guys we had contact with simply did not have a clue what they were talking about when it came to debugging or providing us with Beta fixes (as they were no doubt in development during our problems). It was a classic case of first line support dealing with complex problems which they simply will never be able to solve or will pass on - it is much easier to simply close the issue, send out the standard if you would like to re-open type email and be done with it (anyone who has had these emails know they are ignored and you usually get nothing back anyhow! Anyway, these should sort all your issues out! I know Michael you had problems like this. Re: CFC or UDF
The answers thus far are great. Generally they way I look at it is this. CFCs are stateful, meaning they can hold data and persist over time, udfs are just a place to put commonly used code. For instance if you have a bunch of time calculation functions could just put them in a time_finctions.cfm and using them that way as opposed to creating a time_functions component. I say this becuase generally with time calculations you want to feed it a time and some other data and it returns something...you don't need it to maintain a state between calls. On the other hand if you have a shopping cart where you will do calculations on say an order...you may put your Order into a CFC. Your CFC will maintain the order information as well as a suite of functions that can act upon that information. Hope this simplistic example helps you apply all the knowledge that you will inevitabley be given in this thread :) Adam H On Mon, 28 Mar 2005 00:18:55 -0500, David Brown [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I am new to both of these features, but I am getting the hang of them. Re: CFC or UDF
Jim and others thank you for your responses. I am a bit wet behind the ears here for sure. Do I need to set the object to nothing to kill it? Here are the small number I have so foar (LDAP.cfc) In it I have a method for querying based on CN, a method for modify add and one for modify replace. (sql.cfc) Methods to insert, update and delete (kronos.cfc) All methods (sql calls really) that are related to the application kronos. (utils.cfc) one method to create a datetime based on two arguments that passed it it. I thought I would add more functions to it for string and mathmatical needs that are not easley done in CF. Does this seem like I am on the right track? Is it best per application to create the ojects in application.cfm? For example : We have a folder off of root for our IT department. Everything related to IT is under that folder. So in application.cfm (just learned about application.cfc (we are on cfmx 7)) I have 3 objects created (ldap, kronos, utils). Here is the code. cfobject name=ldap component=com.ldap cfobject name=Kronos component=com.Kronos cfobject name=sqlDataBase component=com.sqlDataBase But I also need ldap.cfc at the root level of the site too and may need the utils.cfc there. Do I create the objects in both places since there are two application.cfm's one at root and one at IT folder level? My question is: What is the difference between them? These are very big questions... here's a shot at it, but I think it will leave you wanting: A UDF is a function: it can be called (perhaps with defined input parameters) to do something. That's it: call it (maybe giving it something to work with) and get an answer (or some work done). Functions generally represent a task, a verb: Find(), Replace(), Delete(), etc - these are all functions. Functions tend to be generalized: I can call Find() all over the place, in all sorts of code and use it. The function doesn't maintain state, it's not persistent and it's not picky - it just works on what its given. A CFC is an object (OO people might slap me for saying this but it stands up well enough at a glance). Objects know things (data) and can do things (methods). CFC methods (those things that the CFC can do) are actually UDFs - so CFCs can also be seen as collections of variables and UDFs. However the UDFs in a CFC are usable only in relation to that CFC. So, in this way at least, CFCs and UDFs aren't in competition. CFCs generally represent some thing. Some tangible (or virtual) noun. For example you might have a Blog CFC. This CFC might contain data (variables) containing the authoring information, system information, etc. It would also contain methods (UDFs) that helped you work with the blog. Things like Add(), Update(), Delete(), Display(), etc. What are the pro's and cons to each? They are both very different things so it's not really a choice of using one or the other. However: On the plus side using CF Mappings CFCs (like Custom Tags) can be included in an application with no fuss and muss: once the mapping is made you access the CFC as if it were part of the language. CFCs also allow for more structured programming in CF (something often missing in CF applications). They don't really enforce better coding, but they can definitely lead to it. CFCs tend to be confusing to people that don't know OO (although they are the gentlest introduction to OO available). They are slightly more complex to plan for an write (since each CFC must be maintained in its own, separate file. UDFs are great for adding functionality to the language. CFML doesn't have a CountMyToes() function and you need it? No sweat: create a UDF. UDFs are also very fast in CFML. Since they are treated by CF as data (as are JavaScript functions) they can be copied, moved, sent, etc. Like CFCs UDFs can often lead to better code. For example you might have a complex calculation going on in an output loop. By moving that calc to a UDF you can greatly simplify the presentation code and separate the calc from your presentation. UDFs can also be a pain the butt as there is no server-level option for including them. You must, on the other hand, make sure to include them where you need them. Because of this UDF management can become a real chore. Unless some standards are put in place you'll find yourself getting those cannot declare the same UDF twice errors all over the place. If I create a CFC with a several methods in it is that not the same thing if I have one

(I posted this on the MM forums too... very curious if anyone has an answer) I want to access the Packaging Deployment area of the CF Administrator programatically so that we can automate the building of CFapps into .war files. I noticed that this isn't available via any of the CFCs listed in the adminapi documentation. Are there plans to add a CFC with this functionality? Is there a way I can do it with CFHTTP? Matt's right here, the basic rule doesn't change depending on scope, it changes on situation. If your looping over the query (with a cfoutput or cfloop using the query attribute) then doing queryname.fieldname will always output the current row's value. If you're not looping over a query then queryname.fieldname will always return the value of the first row as if you said queryname.fieldname[1]. The odd thing is with queries should you use indexed notation you get a different value. While the value of queryname.fieldname is the value of the first row the value of queryname[fieldname] is actually a reference the column - essentially a one dimensional array containing all of the rows values. For most everything you can use this as an array. To get the sum of a query column, for example, you can do ArraySum(queryname[fieldname]). This is a very powerful feature - but test it first. CFMX had some minor bugs with this related to the fact that in some cases it counted the array from zero (as Java) and not from one (as CF). I used cfset something = queryname[fieldname]/. None of them comes out as an array. It's definitely at least a little flakey (which is why I stressed testing this stuff out first). It seems to only be an array on a direct access, not an assignment. So the following all work fine: +) IsArray(QueryName[Column]) does indeed return Yes. +) cfloop from=1 to=#ArrayLen(QueryName[Column])# index=Cnt works just fine. +) ArrayToList(QueryName[Column]) gives you a list of all column values (as would ValueList()). However you're right: when making an assignment (which, I _think_ CFDump does internally) you get the value of the first row. So cfset foo = QueryName[Column] / has the same result as cfset foo = QueryName.Column / However things get stranger still because this cfoutput#QueryName[Column]#/cfoutput actually results in a error (Complex object types cannot be converted to simple values.) were this cfoutput#QueryName.Column#/cfoutput results in the output of the first cell of the column. So while you can use the indexed notation reference as an array nearly every place you can't copy it. At least not simply - however you CAN duplicate it! The following will get you your array: cfset foo = Duplicate(QueryName[Column]) / Foo will now be an array of all values in the column. I'm sure that's not exhaustive, but I hope it at least frames how this works and further underlines the point to test it out before you rely on it. Re: CFUnited - Where's Macromedia?
It is great that Macromedia is allowing several of its employees to speak at CFUnited and they have been doing that for several years now. That does add value to the conference, but is not the same as being a sponsor. With 3 months to go, one would have thought they would have been a sponsor well before this point and possibly at a higher level than their competitors. Macromedia can never ignore their existing customer base - us - but to some extent it's preaching to the choir. The place to do the most selling work is amongst the 'unbelievers' and the 'unsaved'. I don't expect Macromedia to have to resell ColdFusion to those already using it, but what about upgrading to CFMX 7? They do have other products to showcase (captivate, contribute, wps, flex). Conferences are one of the best places to get one-on-one demos and talk face-to-face. If a person is limited to one conference a year for their organization, it is a lost opportunity. Both Microsoft and New Atlanta wouldn't be there if they didn't see an opportunity. An opportunity that becomes larger if Macromedia does not show up as a sponsor. ~| Logware (www.logware.us): a new and convenient web-based time tracking application. Re: Best practice question?
Thanks, Jim. This helps a lot. Johnny -Original Message- It's definitely at least a little flakey (which is why I stressed testing this stuff out first). I see that you can apply CSS to Flash Forms in a ColdFusion page. What about applying CSS to CFChart objects? I don't see any documentation for that and as such must specify the font and font size, etc. for each chart on the page. REPOST: Determine session timeout setting in CF5 on Linux
We have an application that runs on a Linux box (a box we almost never use, except one client refuses to be on a Windows machine) and is running CF5. The application is timing out after 20 minutes, when it's supposed to be an hour. When we first got told about this issue, we realized the admin had set the max session timeout at 20 minutes (which means it overrode the cfapplication tag, which has it set to 1 hour). Even after that, the app is timing out after 20 minutes. I've restarted CF multiple time, and it hasn't helped. My concern is that the restart isn't really taking, so I'd like to see if the application's timeout is indeed an hour and we're just running into some other issue. As of now, our only idea is to restart the entire machine, but that's a bit of an annoying process, because we have to notify another client who uses that Linux machine for their Single Sign-On and manually start some processes after the machine starts up, so that can't happen till next week. So, to make a long story longer, is there a variable or function which can output what value CF is using for the current application's session timeout setting? Re: redirection/user authentication
The redirection is going into an infinite loop. IE gives that error because it is hiding that info from the user. I would revisit the code to see where exactly you are making sure the user is logged in. That is usually the place where this error occurs. It is definitely a checking error. Re: redirection/user authentication
Hi Jack, The choice of referrer for your file name variable seems like it might be a bit confusing -- since it's not actually a referrer until you've directed the user to the next page, which occurs after the variable is set. I'd change it to currentlocation or similar to avoid that confusion, although that's not going to help with your problem... I also don't see the variable cflogin declared anywhere above that portion of your Application.cfm and as a result, cfif not isDefined(cflogin) will always evaluate true and redirect the user. I don't think it will hurt anything for it to be in the Application.cfm, it just won't have any effect on the page. You might want to try using cgi.script_name instead of cgi.path_info. I can't remember the specific circumstances, but I do know I've seen them not be the same value and iirc when they weren't the same, path_info was actually an empty string, so it could be that the value of referrer is even when the template being called is in fact login.cfm -- or better yet don't rely on the cgi variables at all and use getBaseTemplatePath() instead. hth Hey, folks. I agree with Rick. Who cares if MM is sponsoring the conference? In fact I'd rather they not, so it stays focused solely on CF. Afterall if you want demos of all the MM products go to MAX. This conference is aimed at CF developers. MM is sending a bunch of great speakers so lets be happy with that and not delve deeper in this possibly being a sign of a hostile Microsoft takeover. -Adam On Mon, 28 Mar 2005 12:38:29 -0500, Rick Root [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: David Epler wrote: It is great that Macromedia is allowing several of its employees to speak at CFUnited and they have been doing that for several years now. Thanks for the tip, Rebecca. I'll check those out and perhaps start cooking up some Javascript stew...coming from a Cold-Fusion-was-my-introduction- to-modern-programming point-of-view, Javascript and even Actionscript look alien...so unintuitive. RE: just noticed this when validating email
Agreed...I guess the thing that causes me to hesitate is that I usually experience seeing Javascript on this list. Of course, what I see here is far beyond beginner stuff, usually. It's not so much that I don't think I can learn it, or climb the learning curve as much as do I have time away from CF coding that makes money now to dedicate to JS, which I don't have much call for with the low-level CF work I do now, which is basically building update, delete, and addition functions for website calendars, announcements, photos galleries, etc. I'm an independent web designer/programmer/trash-taker-outer, so there's no one around demanding functionality that would demand JS, so I just don't take the time. I need some 2-minute tutorials that, within a few lessons, can give me something practical to use. As far as future jobs with web design...I don't have any kind of computer programming or technical degrees, so without credentials, I'd never be hired by a company that required JS, anyway. I'm just looking at how practical it is to learn and implement JS. I do love a good challenge, however...get the blood pumping! RE: redirection/user authentication
My suggestion is to have the form submit to itself. I do all my forms that way and it makes it much easier to pass the form data back to itself in case of errors. Then, in the application.cfm, I do the login checks. I would also suggest copying these files to backup, then rebuilding each step one piece at a time. Most likely, it's a simple problem, but you are too close to it to see. If you are interested, I can dig up one of my form-based login methods and mail it to you. Mike - it would be great if you could show me a form-based login that actually works! I usually do make my forms self-submitting but decided to keep everything seperate here, because I thought it would make it easier to figure out where I was going wrong. In my original version of this code, I did also have the actual login taking place in the application file - but moved it to a seperate file, again, so that I could get a clearer idea of what was causing the redirection problem. Since I know now that it's NOT the cflogin block, I can probably put it back into the application file - once I know what IS causing the error! ~| Logware (www.logware.us): a new and convenient web-based time tracking application. In a related question, how many of you have multiple sites using credit card processors? Do you make each site sign up for a separate merchant account or has anyone been successful in setting something up where all transactions go through one account? Also, I heard that PayPal was supposed to be implementing an API so you could process through them directly from your site without any jump over to one of their pages, but I haven't had luck in making it work. Alternating Row Colour - Sorta
Here's the page in question: http://www.stpaulscolumbia.com/calendar.cfm Client is asking for alternating colors for DAYS - not rows. At first, I figured, OK, Odd Dates one colour, Even Dates another. Nope, don't work because there may be something on the 5th and 7th, both odd dates - but not the 6th ... and then you'd get two groups of events - those on the 5th and 7th, the same colour. It looks like you are already using a group by in the query to group by month, just use a second group by, this one on the day. In the second group by set the bg color. Re: New CFFORM website
Nice effort, but not much attention to detail. Most of the examples are really clumsily put together. Heck, even the form on the contact page (http://www.cfform.com/contact.cfm) won't enforce any sort of validation on the email field! Given that Macromedia bribed Jakob Nilsen into stopping his bashing of Flash, they should now give him a REAL job checking these forms out before publication :-) Just got this off Tim Buntel's blog: In case you haven't heard, cfform.com has officially launched! This is a site that Mike Nimer, the principal engineer on the CFFORM features for CFMX 7, has put together for sharing skins and other extensions for both Flash and XML forms. Think cflib.org for the Form set. I'm extremely excited to see what folks publish - and a big hearty thanks to Mike for putting this together (on his own personal accord, I may point out). Thought I'd share it. It looks like potentially an awesome site. What got me was the think cflib.org for the form set.
