Re: Best Rich Text Editor

2005-08-10 Thread Matt Robertson
> a good CMS should NOT allow users to use HTML to fulfill all their
> fantasies.
See, this is -- to me at least -- where the laboratory gets hit smack in
the face with reality. Yes of course styles should rule. But try telling a
user their tabulated data can't be entered into the cms (tables are about
the only way that'll happen) or that because the Board of Directors wants to
use Comic Sans in 96-pt Muave for their monthly report's page title that you
can't accomodate them because only a bad system would allow such a thing...
Like it or not you have to allow users to muck up their sites if they so
choose and it has nothing to do with whether the cms is saintly or eee-vil.
 > Finally, the HTML editor should not allow users to upload any image
anytime.
Oh my God! If I were to pick one feature that users were explicitly
delirious over, and which management expressly listed as a job requirement,
it would be the ability to upload an image or document (pdf, .doc; .xls or
somesuch) inline directly into the page via the wysiwyg editor. I used to do
it the way you describe and no, your users won't tolerate it unless you are
the one writing the paychecks, or you have a plant inside management who is
of a like mind and damn the torpedoes.
Not speaking to you personally, Claude, but it amazes me how parochial and
textbook-oriented so many developers are with respect to what a 'good' CMS
is. A good CMS does what its users want it to do. If it doesn't its a
textbook-correct product sitting on a shelf.

Re: CF7 lots of new "Ambiguous column name" issues

2005-08-10 Thread Dina Hess
Well, I'd like to see the parsed query to be certain that your problem
is fully addressed but, from what you've provided, I'd say Claude has
honed in on your issue. You need to scope the formobjectitemid and
archive columns with either the version or companynews table. This is
best practice for any SQL statement that references more than one
table.

If you'd like to provide the parsed query, you can do so in one of two
ways: 1) copy the parsed query from your debug info or 2) comment out
the CFQUERY tags and replace them with CFOUTPUT tags.

Re: Error Handling for Apps

2005-08-10 Thread Matt Robertson
If you use a site-wide error handler, that does not mean you have to have
one error handler for every site. You can customize the error handling as
much as you please. In the error handling tutorial on my web site I
demonstrate the use of a switch that differentiates on cgi.server_name IIRC.
You can vary a lot more finely than that if you wanted to.

For app-wide error handlers I use cferror and type="Exception" and go from
there. You could also wrap an entire template in try/catch, but that is a
pain and inefficient (been there, done that).

If your server or network is down you pretty much need an external monitor
to page you. I wrote SitePeeker (free tag) to do that for me and use a
cheapo hosting acct at hostmysite to do all of that.

Cheers,

I think the point was specifically that he wanted to do it in CF because he
_counldn't_. ;^)

He was purposefully setting himself a challenge to his skills - which I'm
all for. He'll learn a lot.

But in the end I agree with you much more than I disagree - it may be better
for him to learn something else to do it - if it made sense (and in this
case it doesn't seem to me).

Well, that worked like a champ. You have no idea how relieved I am to

Your representation is inaccurate. The original conversation went something
like this:

Q: I want to write a CF application which fetches a site, like HTTrack does.
A: Use wget with CFEXECUTE.
Q: But I want to do it in CF, just because I can.
A: Well ok then, but it's going to suck compared to, well, almost anything
else, because CF isn't good at that.

Now, I don't have a problem with that - there's nothing wrong with doing
something for fun, because you can. But it's certainly not the best approach
to solving the problem. There's nothing high or mighty about that. So, I
stand by my proposition that the original poster would probably be better
off spending his time learning another language to do this than to do it
with CF.

Russ,

I'm guessing some other tag is missing a closing tag or some other syntax
error. Can you post your code?

OK this is doing my head in, I am getting this error.

Context validation error for tag cfform.
The end tag encoutered on line 117 at column 3 requires a matching
start tag.

Which is rubbish.

I have 1 and only 1 CFFORM tag in my page and it has both a starting and
closing tag.

So why the hell am I getting this error.

Exactly - but here's my point:

We have these conversations a lot. Somebody asks how to do something and
somebody (sometimes myself) gets all high-and-mighty that they should be
using a better, more appropriate tool.

But the world doesn't work that way. We have limitations.

Sometimes we have to do the best we can with what we have and what we know
in the time we have.

I agree it's getting silly. But so is chastising people who want to
complete tasks as best they can with what they got.

This isn't a "hammer and a wrench" situation. This is a shovel and a
backhoe situation: both can get the job done but one is vastly superior, but
requires much more training and resources.

Which is exactly why the best tool for the job may not be the right tool for
the job.

It depends on what you mean by a form submission error. If someone enters
the wrong datatype within a form field, and you then submit that to a
database, CFERROR will trap that. It would be a database exception. If you
write your own validation to check data, you have to figure out how to deal
with invalid data. If you use the built-in "server-side" validation that
consists of hidden form fields (ex: "fieldname_required", "fieldname_date",
etc), you can customize the error page that's presented using CFERROR with
the TYPE attribute set to "VALIDATION".

Really? There are plenty of people (myself included) who would disagree.
Within a Contribute site, you can control what authors can do within an HTML
page, and you can control who can edit which pages. The administrator of the
Contribute site uses Contribute itself to administer the site, create user
accounts, specify permissions, and so on. All this can be done within
Dreamweaver as well.

For you, perhaps. However, it is considered a CMS product by the CMS world
at large, for what that's worth. In addition, you can implement limited
workflow (draft and approval process) within a Contribute site. The
server-side CMS component allows greater flexibility with this, but even
using just Contribute you can specify that an author can't publish something
without an editor's approval.

Neither did I, but if there is no server component, as someone said,
where is the structure handled ?
If it allows any one to write down a page and claim "Here is a news
release", the user manages the content,
not the system.

I think that's what it does--- doesn't it?

I'm not sure, I've never used it, but from the little I've seem it does most
everything on the authoring side that I'd expect of a CMS.

Of course, again, there's no hard and fast definition. We use StoryServer
at the office... but the only interface to change pages is a simple WYSIWYG
IE editing control. However the engine itself does manage the content -
caching, timed deploys, workflow, etc. It's just that actual creation of
the content is cutting edge for 1998.

They call it CMS but it pales next to anything I'd call a CMS. ;^)

May be, but a CMS is supposed to be a system that manages content.
If it just does text editing, then it is a text editor, if it gives
access to HTML formating,
then it is also an HTML editor, but it is not a SYSTEM, just a program.

A true CMS is able to managed a STRUCTURED content, including pages,
paragraphs,
titles, images, agenda, news releases, etc. all with or without some
workflow management.

I got this a few times yesterday actually - but in my case, the
queries worked fine in Enterprise Manager (that's where they were
written and tested first). The queries were going into the Report

Correct, compile-time errors aren't handled by CFERROR, which is a
runtime construct. The assumption being that you'll never have code
with compiler errors in production. So try or

Thanks Barney,

I forgot to mention that this is for a server running CF5.
I'm testing out CFError by deliberately putting an error in one of my pages by
not closing the CFSET tag

I dunno - it does manage access to content and the content itself (or least
it seems to).

There are no hard and fixed definitions here but I'd call it a client-side
CMS - it's definitely more than just an editor in my opinion.

Re: Error Handling for Apps

2005-08-10 Thread Barney Boisvert
CFERROR or Application.cfc's onError method is what you want. That'll
let you configure per-app error messages, because you're exactly
right, the site-wide error template is really a server-wide error
template.

If your server/network is down and the server's not getting the
requests or can't respond to them, you're not going to be able to
provide an error message to your visitors. That'd have to happen at
some higher level.

Error Handling for Apps

2005-08-10 Thread Ali Awan
I know this is a topic that has been discussed before so I apologize. I
went through the archives on here and got some ideas, but just wanted to
validate/invalidate my assumptions before I started down a path.

Basically what I'm looking for is somewhere to just bounce my ideas off of,
and get some advice/best practices in setting up Error Handling for Apps.

I have multiple apps on my server, and I was going to use the Site-Wide
error template in the ColdFusion Administrator. Am I correct in assuming
that I will get the exact same error template for every app on my server?

If so, what is the best way to handle an App-Wide error template? Would
that be the CFError tag? Also if I use the CFError tag, and I just want to
handle every possible error imaginable do I just set the Type attribute to
"Exception"?

What if my server or network is down? Is there a way to catch that?

I appreciate any and all input on this.

cheers,

Ali

Re: Best Rich Text Editor

2005-08-10 Thread Claude Schneegans
 >>None of them do exactly what we want

What for instance would you like to have?

I've designed my own, because I didn't find any (at that time) which had
all the characteristics
I thought should belong to an HTML editor in a good CMS.

- a good CMS should NOT allow users to use HTML to fulfill all their
fantasies.
So, users should not be able to define any color, font size and what
ever, instead, they
should be able to select a style (or a class) the site designers have
designed for them.
- a good HTML editor should be callable from several places in a form,
each instance
having it's own set of tools and styles available to the user. For
instance when editing
a News Release, I ask the user to fill a summary and the main content. I
don't want him
to have access to all the tools for the summary, not even to bold, since
this is handled
by the News Release template any way.
- a good HTML Editor should not be embeded in a textarea, instead, it
should open a new window
which can be resized any sized to resemble the final page the text is
intended,
otherwise it is not really WYSIWYG.
- a good HTML editor should not allow pasting from MS Word with no basic
cleaning.

Finally, the HTML editor should not allow users to upload any image anytime.
The problem with HTML Editors is that they are completely independant
from the CMS system.
Images should be managed by some tool in the CMS admin module, and
registered in the database,
including image sizes, some title, description etc.
Then, the CMS provides some tool to select and display images from the
database, not the editor.

Re: MAX 2005 - things to do in Anaheim

2005-08-10 Thread Ken Ferguson
Well, when you're in Anaheim, you're basically in LA, so you just might
be able to find one or two things going on!
http://www.losangeles.com/
http://www.anaheim.org/index.html
http://www.laparks.org/dos.htm
http://www.la.com

Check the schedule at www.nhl.com to see if you'll be able to catch a
Kings or Ducks game.

The Icehouse in Pasadena and Comedy Underground in Santa Monica are both
greatness. There's tons of great live music to be heard in LA too.
Outdoor venues, indoor, whatever. There are plenty of local bands to see.

If you're one of the guys bringing family along, head out to Carlsbad
and check out Legoland.

Wake up early and drive 1-2 hours to Joshua Tree. If you climb, I don't
need to say any more than that. If you don't, hit up
http://www.joshuatreerockclimbing.com/ for their 1-day class and you'll
have the time of your life.

Best of all if you've got $1,000 to spare, head to Fullerton and fly in
a dogfight at www.aircombatusa.com! (Even better if you get a group of
guys from MAX to head out with you!)

Lots of strong golf courses in the LA area if you're so inclined.

You'll have no dificulty finding things to do, that's for sure.

Also, you're only about 1-2 hours from San Diego, so that opens up
another million or so possiblities that many would argue are even better
than LA.

You don't put a ";" at the end of the "if" clause. It end the entire if/else
block leaving the rest flapping in the wind.

Most likely a typo, but of archive sake added an explanation.

With one caveat: choose the most appropriate language that you can use well.

This may mean hiring somebody to do it or learning something new before
tackling it - but the best tool overall is not the best tool if you don't
know how to use properly.

Dreamweaver 8 and CSS

2005-08-10 Thread Connie DeCinko
Anyone know how this helps in regards to cross-browser support? I spent
many hours this week finding CSS that made both IE and FF happy.

Take CSS-based design to the next level.
The new, unified CSS panel makes complex CSS simple. See a visual
representation of the cascade as it applies to content for quick access and
power. Plus, the new CSS layout visualization provides design-time visual
aids for quick review of page structure, and the styles rendering toolbar
previews different CSS media types.

An unthreaded java class will be magnitudes faster than a
synchronous CF application because it can maintain the
connection. CF will have to re-establish the connection on each
request.

I may be wrong but I don't see how they could be separate - to determine
if the request is a web service CF has to process the request... to do
that it needs to assign a thread...

(Web Service requests are no different in structure than any other HTTP
request.)

No... they must be the same pool.

I couldn't do it - I don't know Java (although, dammit, I've really got to

I still maintain that a well-written CF app can still beat a crappily
written pure Java app. But if you know both already then it's no question
which should be used here.

The problem isn't one of capability, it's one of performance.

The main problem is that "plain" CF is a serialized, procedural language -
you can only do one thing at a time. An app like the one you describe, to
be fast, really needs to have good control over threading and process
management (when a single web page might require several dozen HTTP requests
doing them in serial just kills an apps performance).

Using the ASynch gateway you can launch multiple processes at the same time
helps immensely, but each of these requests is a "full request" in CF - all
of the overhead related to any CF request is there.

A more "atomic" language (like C or Java) can launch threads in a very
efficient way that allows you to get your specific job done with as little
overhead as possible.

In general you're looking at a well written CF application being orders of
magnitude slower than a well written Java or C application. (Although, of
course, a great CF app can still beat a crappy Java or C application.)

As for scripting languages... none of them are perfectly suited this kind of
highly concurrent task. Script languages are optimized for use, not for
performance generally.

But you COULD build it in a lot of languages. JavaScript or VBScript
(leveraging COM objects in a Windows Scripting Host or HTA Container) could
do it.

PERL may be the best choice but you'd really need to add on some of the more
esoteric extensions to get the request performance up. PERL is very good at
parsing text, but it's not the parsing so much as the HTTP traffic that
worries me. So PERL may not be significantly faster than CF on such a job.

In the right container (something that wasn't security limited to a host
site for example) pretty much any scripting language with the ability to do
HTTP and string manipulation could do it. Python and TCL come to mind.
Heck, you COULD do this in Lingo if you wanted. ;^)

Heck, you COULD do this in Lingo if you wanted. ;^)

I should have stated that, rather than asking.

You can just use the cfhttp file and path attributes to save a
binary/include file directly to disk.

I've also found that getting a rental car at LAX is sometimes more
expensive too!!! You may want to check into this if you are planning on
getting a ride. You may end up saving 15 bucks to fly into the hell that

That's one thing the stand alone apps can do, is allow you to set how many
threads you want to use to pull down the site, rather than one at a time.
For a large site, it can mean minutes vs. hours.

As for performance I would highly recommend checking out the Asynch gateway
- using this in CF MX 7 you can launch multiple threads at your target to
collect all those little assets (images, scripts, styles, etc) instead of
waiting for each to come in serial.

That alone would make you app several orders of magnitude faster.

Dave is right that CF isn't even close to the best tool for the job... but
for what it's worth this ColdFusion (CF MX 7) is the best ColdFusion ever
for this job. ;^)

I think it's a great exercise to try - you'll learn a lot and will end up
with a nice tool that could solve a lot of problems even if it's not
suitable for a full-fledged web scraper.

(It's also something that you might consider open-sourcing for the
community... hint, hint. ;^) )

As many have said, it can be done. But as many have also said, it's not
something CF is going to be good at, so I doubt you are going to find anything
already done in it.

But if you want to do this; the major pieces you are going to need are
which will give you a page. Refind() will allow you to parse the returnd page
to look for links of all types. I'm not sure what one does about fetching
binary files such as images, but my first guess would be the base64 functions
and cffile. You'll also be wanting the ability to fire off new requests to get
linked pages found with the refind() functions. MX7 enterprise, if you have
access to it, would be a big help with its asynchrous gateway functionality.

Have Fun.

That's not 100% accurate - at least the part about it being done on the client
side. You can build up your own SOAP envelope (example here:
http://jibbering.com/2002/4/httprequest.html - scroll down to "Using XMLHTTP

gain by using SOAP (in cf at least) is that the server side checking is done by
the framework, so you don't have to write any of it. Better yet, if you do
submit such a malformed SOAP request you get a nice standardized error
response.

If you have one parameter then you're not gaining much, but if you have dozens

Dave,
Ok - here's my take

I'm sorry to disagree with you - but the goal of "call for pricing" is not
usually to shield customers from your pricing for their own good. It is to
get someone - some person (some salesperson usually) to talk with you and
make a pitch. I think there is definitely a moral dimension to it in some
cases. I'm NOT making a comment specifically about commonSpot or any other
product - and I do not know your connection with that product, but consider
this scenario.

Customer "A" calls in with a question about the product. He indicates he's
the IT director of a large company and they are looking to replace their
current CMS (let's say red dot) with a new one because they are not happy
with the product - no mention of it's costliness. The CMS provider being
savvy knows that Red Dot's pricing model is per seat with an installed
enterprise license of 70k. So he or she bids in that neighborhood with per
seat pricing. They maximize the profit margin by targeting the current price
point (even though they may typically sell the product at a much lower cost
- say 40,000).

Customer "B" calls in and they are a small to medium size business with a
portal site that has grown unwieldy. They are looking to implement CMS for
the first time and they need a product, training, ongoing support etc. The
sales person senses that budget is an issue so they target a price that is
much lower than for customer "A" even though the actual product offering may
be strikingly similar. Because of the complexity of the product AND the
obscurity in pricing, customer "A" will never know they overpaid.

In my view (and granted I may be the only one) this is not even handed
enough to qualify as "ok" or "right" - sorry. Perhaps my standard is too
high, but I think it's deceptive and wrong. I don't mind companies who
offer discounts or make deals if they are above board about it, but they
should not obscure the price of for market product just to give themselves
"wiggle room".

The complexity of the product IS a factor in pricing, but there's no reason
not to post a base price sheet for levels and/or modules with the caveat
that some modules and services incur additional cost. Yes, your customers
may get "confused" by your pricing scheme - at which point you could try
simplifying it (there's a thought) or explaining it. It's not an
intractable problem - just a difficult one. And the idea of "shielding your
customers from your pricing scheme" because they might get confused is high
handed. It reminds me of that Phil Hartman routine with the caveman - "I'm
just a simple caveman. I don't understand your big words like 'license' and
'module'"

You are right that it is common practice for complex product offerings to
NOT post their prices, but there are certainly very complex product
offerings that DO post their prices (as anyone who has tried to navigate the
complexity of Microsoft licensing can attest).

From: Dave Watts [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

For the record, this is not how CommonSpot pricing works. They do have fixed
prices for their products. However, different clients tend to need different
products and different numbers of licenses, so it would be difficult for
Paperthin to post prices on their site and have people make sense of them.
Unfortunately, the fact is that complex products tend to have complex
pricing schemes.

As for moral reprehensibility, that's silly. There is no moral dimension to
pricing. The goal of any seller is to maximize profit, and if flexible
pricing schemes make that happen, that's the logical way to sell.

We're moving from soeditor (having finally given up waiting for the new
version) to fckeditor, which seems to be as good as any others we've
evaluated. None of them do exactly what we want but fckeditor is as good
as any, being open source, allows us to hack it as required.

Our changes will be sent back to them when they're remotely complete but
FYI the changes to date are:

* allow available styles to be extracted from a database table

* enable the code (especially the image browser) to be easily shared in
our linux hosting environment

* rewrite the image browser and its associated XMLHttpRequest connector
to play nicely with our MySQL/mod_perl/ImageMagick image management system

* as I write, I'm rewriting the link browser to integrate with our CMS

The last two items won't likely be of direct interest to anyone but us,
but will hopefully provide a template for anyone else wanting to do
similar hacks.
